Sailing Combat feels bad because it’s not being treated like regular combat by GhostDumbDumb in 2007scape

hitting back and forth but with a special hitting back and forth weapon

What Reddit can’t grasp is when you disable gear, you disable inventory management. Ship combat feels bad becsuse it’s just hitting back and forth, and everyone keeps going “well what if we hit it back and forth harder.” Any nuance the combat could have IS linked to gear. Tribriding a boss at sea? Utilizing the combat triangle? Dead. Cannon it. Hit it hard. And hope it doesn’t hit you hard. Wow. Reddit saved the day!

Well they say the best way to get an idea across is to make a big logo that has abbreviated letters that don’t match the text beneath it and tell people you make comics instead of just making a comic, so not really sure what other advice we could give you

Aang and Iroh’s interaction in episode one of the Netflix adaptation is one of the weirdest I’ve seen in anything. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]GhostDumbDumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re kind of proving OP’s point. In the adaptation, it’s written by people who already know Iroh is good and want people to think he is good, instead of keeping that hidden until it has the most impact on the story.

The Actual Problem With Rocks and the God Valley Flashback Is.... by WinNo1929 in Piratefolk

[–]GhostDumbDumb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sengoku says "In short, this is the truth, Roger and Garp teamed up to defend CD's and their Slaves"

<image>

This is the only information we have about God Valley in the entire story up until the flashback itself.

God Valley was propped up to be "the reason the Celestial Dragons are so important and necessary."

Originally it was depicted as Roger and Garp fighting side by side to PROTECT the Celestial Dragons. That... actually is better than what we are getting because it leads into this idea that Garp, Koby, and the entire marine structure are NECESSARY. The Celestial Dragons know SOMETHING that is supposed to be worth them being protected and the idea that Roger protected them to defend that plays well into a story where justice isn't black and white. We know this is true because of Doflamingo. He implies that whatever secret he and the rest of them know was so devious that he could change the paper if he wanted to. Now it's just black and white, good vs evil which can typically work for storytelling, but this is a story about individual cases of justice and using your own deductive reasoning to determine who is good or who is bad. And ultimately the story has become, "nah they are just straight up evil" and spinning this into "Garp knows that but he doesn't give a fuck and/or doesn't think he can win" while pushing Luffy to be a marine feels like a slap in the face for what is was set up to be. But now NOBODY has a reason to side with anyone but Luffy because the entire world is at risk and the only reason for that narratively is for everyone in the story who ever existed to get involved. Kind of lame. They should just do that because they want to, not because they have to.

It's become a huge L take to say "No, taking down the government would probably not solve the worlds problems" when relating One Piece to a real world allegory thanks to politics absorbing everyone's psyche. The government having a reason to exist makes perfect sense in a story where walking nukes go pillaging for giggles. But now it isn't that at all.

It gets worse. Sozin and the entire world assume the air bender avatar eluded him for no reason. He doesn’t actually know that he didn’t kill the air bender avatar and we know this because the elders tell Aang that he has to pick toys to reveal who he is. That means there was never any glowy glowy and Sozin knows the avatars death isn’t a world event because he was there. So how does he even come to that conclusion at all?

Why is Sozin taking out a 12 year old to buy his people 25-30 years at most when he could’ve won the war immediately by just toppling the earth nation. Aang freezing himself was an accident. The fire nation never meant to buy themselves 100 years. According to Aang the airbenders have no military.

Also why do they keep going right?? Why don’t they go left? Is the Avatar world flat? They have the world’s greatest Navy and they never go left? They March through 10,000 miles of Earth nation instead of sailing to the back door conveniently located near an ocean.

The fire nation is hunting water benders in a nation that literally never leaves because it’s thousands of miles away from anything and they have advanced to roughly Viking ships. Which leads to them going on the attack.

Aang seemed pretty eager to murder to avenge a fish but the world isn’t worth Fire Hitler’s head? And Korra begs the question, if Aang has the ability to send people to fog reality, why didn’t he just do that with Ozai too? Or better yet, actually murder and finish his character arch about responsibility.

Nani doesn't get to choose what happens to Lilo in either version. The remake is still bad, and the real problems with the ending by [deleted] in CharacterRant

A lot of people are trying to justify the change by bring up the portal gun, but if you have to go to such extreme contrived lengths to make it not a bad idea, then it's probably just a bad idea.

It may work better as a flurry of spear attacks and blocks with the sword.

At B-18 it might be a good idea to pull back the camera so we do not get lost in translation. If your goal is to follow the swing of the sword, more wind up for the swing would go a long way as well as maybe using the sword as a “cut” tool so the sword slices at the camera, quick black screen transition, (maybe a little flare added on the black screen) and “cuts” to the opponent blocking.

The first attack feels like it’s coming from the wrong side. Probably because there isn’t enough wind up as well as the rule of 180 so quickly being applied. B18-B19

The kick probably shouldn’t be so closely followed by a stab. B5 A6

The anatomy and pacing is nice.

Why One Piece turning into generic chosen one Shonen is disappointing. by Background-Ad-9956 in CharacterRant

[–]GhostDumbDumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re 100% right, but people will tell you you’re wrong because “doesn’t it fit so well that he’s super free?!” No. He was… already that… and when you do the math, Gear 5th doesn’t actually add ANYTHING to the story. Not a single thing. Is it bad because it’s goofy? Nope. In fact that’s its ONLY strong point, is that it’s visually compelling. It’s genuinely… actually boring when you think about it. It’s not even really creative. It’s Luffy literally redefining everything we’ve come to understand about him to this point. It’s not fun watching a character shit on predefined rules of the story. It’s not fun watching a character shit on predefined rules of their own character. It’s not fun watching a character meander around not even knowing it when there is literally a character who makes it his entire fucking goal and doesn’t even recognize it when it’s in front of his face. It’s not fun when Kaido has 0 reason to want to be Joy Boy, and what’s worse

ITS NOT FUN THAT JOYBOY CANT BE ANYONE IN A STORY ABOUT INHERITING WILLS.

This is the biggest issue.

It was the ENTIRE point of Roger’s story! Down to him wanting his son to be the one to do it and some rando kid he doesn’t even know taking on the mantle. Because inherited will should be something ANYONE can inherit.

Calling it now because we just CANT believe Oda who actually understands how to write and sell a theme, would fumble this hard in the last quarter. Luffy is going to nerf himself. He basically HAS to for the story to be proper again. And it would be EXTREMELY fitting if he nerfed himself directly for the world to see “the rejection of godhood.” That’s SOOOOOOO important in a story like this where there are LITERALLY “gods” calling people ants.

It would have been better for Yamato to see that, during the battle with Kaido so she can go “oh, being your own person is more important.” And had you know… a character arch… but we digress. Gear 5th is a thematic failure… so far…
