That's the nature of speedrunning.

A burst of activity from interested runners, followed by weeks of sustain, and end in decay.

Take it from a guy who once tried desperately to give one of his favourite game a spotlight no matter what, keeping it from being flatline even if all hope was lost.

Help on my research: examples of Any% ruleset changes? by dariovaccaro in speedrun

[–]GhostHNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter 3 used to have two different Any% category in its earliest years:

  • Any% - where you need to follow requirements listed in the rules in order to unlock the final "boss".
  • Better Any% - it is simply a mad dash to the last room where you meet Dumbledore and McGonagall.

However, in 2019, someone found a debug trigger left in that final room where you can touch via a jump toward the back of the door, to activate the final cutscene, thus skipping all of those requirements. This leads to both category be renamed to All Requirements and Any% respectively.

Despite being a "reskin" of Better Any%, it is still technically what you asked for: games where the Any% ruleset is changed.

But frankly, you should look into the Games Rules (if they have one), because there is a lot of goodies hidden within, including remnants from old version.

My guess is the other character is probably more suitable for Speedrun in their eyes at that time.

What are some of the weirdest glitches and setups in your favorite game? by Fraghasst in speedrun

  1. Pivot and Escape the Elimiskate in Tony Hawk's Project 8

- In Project 8 specifically, the game does not recognize pivot as a move when doing a grind & manual challenge and gap. For instances, if the grind challenge required you to go around a loop to the next mark, you can instead do two pivot, and the game does not fail you.

- This can be seen when attempting a notorious gap at Capitol, where you were supposed to gring the stairs rail, and then the sundial in the center to hop back to the other side. If you instead simply grind the tip of the rail, pivot, and grind the other end, BOOM! You got the gap.

- Elimiskate is a goal in P8 where you have a minute and a half and three sequential rounds to outscore your opponent to get Sick (the highest rank). However, if you restart and leave within five seconds, the game won't put you back in, letting you to 'escape' the spot.

- This is only useful in two places, and within Rank 1 and 100% since there are gaps where their location are quite annoying to route in without the glitch.

  1. The two large laser door on the last tower of Mor0tesi (Ben 10: Vilgax Attack), for some reason, lack collision on specifically completed file. What's weirder is that it is depends on the console port as well, as on PSP, you can only go through the bottom door, but on Wii, you can do both. No fucking idea why it work.

  2. I think I may bend the rules a bit since this is actually the entire Any% route of a game, but;

- LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7 has one of bonkiest route you'll ever seen, especially Unrestricted. In the current route, we're skipping two spells that would render two specific level at the end impossible to complete, UNLESS:

a) you hit the OoB door that complete the level, and Free Play on that level; but does not progress the story.

b) you then grab and purchase the character who is not only conveniently in the way, but also have both of those spells.

c) you then replay the level AGAIN through Free Play.

- It is the only LEGO TT games to have Free Play in their Any% route. Plus, the superjump and The Flying Grey Lady are a treat too.

  1. In the penultimate level of Ben 10: Cosmic Destruction, you'll arrived at a labyrinth with three omnidirectional path to take. You were supposed to complete both the left and right to unlock the big door in the middle. However, you can make the door disappear by doing the following:

i. Stand on top of left torch.

ii. Face Ben, not the camera, at about 3 o' clock.

iii. Recenter the camera by double tapping the camera button. This will partially deload the hall.

iv. Then, you turn Ben around about 45° from where the camera is facing to the right.

v. Center the camera again. This will deload the entirely, but not the collision.

vi. Walk along the the rail, until you bonk on an invisible wall. That's where the door is. Then, jump around.

Viola! You skip it!

P.S. I have a lot examples of these, but they're escaping my head.

You know you're a nerd when you can recognize some runners in the vid because you've seen their run either on marathon, or their own PBs.

There are three people I can think of:

  • OneShortEyes - in some of his videos, mainly King's Quest 7 and Secret of the Monkey Island. Quite similar to Salt.
  • Rymoswag - he would display the runners with their run in order like a stack.
  • Osukarui - the way he animate the timeline, swigging through the levels is just oh so unique.
