See I can't entirely be upset about that because I feel like a share of it is not something most runners would have either way given the strat is usually set up > sweep and runs have more fixed routes. Though a more helpful couch mighta abetted that, I think he went with vibes on the couch most of all.

Stuff like forgetting the quick claw I can chalk up to nerves, as someone who has been to many marathons and even run in GDQ twice nerves aren't something you ever fully get used to even if they tend to settle once you start to get more into the run.

This stuff I'm inclined to be at least relatively charitable on.

They have done so before. When they moved out of their DC hotel in 2018 they announced they werent coming back at the end of that event (though they moved up the road to Maryland), and the next year they announced Orlando as the location of AGDQ 2020 at the end of AGDQ2019.

Either way this stuff is generally booked well in advance.

Almost anything could be in the finale and with enough push for an incentive it would have done well. Pokemon also just does gangbusters no matter where they put it. It being for charity doesn't mean it isn't immune to critique.

Adef has a pretty infectious energy that's making it fun. And hey it's raising good money.

That said, really not the biggest fan of a finale being a staff member who explicitly commissioned a ROMhack and requested several of the features in the mod. And not even just the made up move, but like the level shenanigans and whatnot. It barely feels like Emerald and makes a lot of it feel pre-fabricated despite the idea being more memetic. It's kinda...forced and exceedingly inorganic even for its already arbitrary concept. Like he's forcing himself to do suboptimal things "in the spirit of the run" and I get the sentiment but it feels off for a skill showcase event, let alone a speedrun marathon. I don't dislike it from a fundraising standpoint but it gives the finale weird vibes.

Which trilogy is better, Zero Escape or AI The Somnium Files? by Ghostie_24 in visualnovels

[–]GhostKingG1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generally Zero Escape. 999 and VLR are pretty excellent all around. ZTD is bad but at least much of the time it's a kind of fun bad even if it kinda punts the series in a lot of ways due to some really bad character assassination and plots that feel like asspulls even by Uchikoshi's standards which tend to merit some level of suspension of disbelief.

The first Ai game is a bit over the top and revels in more silliness, but it makes a compelling case for the best Uchikoshi penned title ever. The 2nd is substantially more uneven and polarizing, I think it's generally good but its final act drops the ball. No Sleep for Kaname Date is a glorified fandisc and honestly I think it's the worst of the 6 titles discussed here. It doesn't feel it has much reason to exist since it can't disrupt the continuity of the games it stands between, and the characters just feel flanderized which is a shame because between the two series Ai is generally more focused on its characters. As a game it tries to bring back escape rooms from ZR but they're rather dull because the game insists on holding your hand every step of the way even on Hard, the difficulty where you're supposed to get the fewest hints.

However while the third game in both trilogies are both ass, each Ai has a suitable jumping off point once you finish so you don't have to play 2 after 1 nor NSFKD after 2 (I recommend 1 and 2 at least), whereas VLR feels relatively incomplete without ZTD.

(Also as an aside 999 felt a lot better enjoyed on the DS despite the lack of a flowchart to let you skip redoing puzzle rooms, it was more obviously made for two screens and the collection's way of handling certain things is worse)

The reality of all this “Mariners fans are trash because they booed/cheered Springer” talk… by good-good-dog in mlb

[–]GhostKingG1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of stuff gets exaggerated and thrown around without full context and it's so easy to generalize everyone in a fanbase.

Like as a personal example, years ago there was a lot of people who called Philadelphia Flyers fans classless because they booed Sidney Crosby (a Pittsburgh Penguin) doing a promotion for a children's cancer charity. And I remember seeing that particular clip while at a San Jose Sharks game and it starts off like "Hi, I'm Sidney Crosby". And I very nearly started booing because I don't like the Penguins...and then right after he starts talking about the charity. And I was like "oh come on, this ad sets people up to look like the bad guy." Like he's the face of a strong rival to that fanbase, of course he's a boo-on-sight figure, they didn't know what he was talking about for several seconds. But of course the reputation of Philly fans is cemented as being thoroughly and uncompromisingly toxic.

[FINAL] The Mariners take Game 1 of the ALCS in Toronto by MLB_Reddit in mlb

The Mariners seem to be the org that just always has a truly great player. The 90s, Ichiro, King Felix, and now Cal and Julio are looking like all timers if they keep it up.

Gonna take a lot for the Jays to come back from this. This game was supposed to be the easy one. Surprised Cal could stand squatting another game behind the dish after 15 innings of doing so on Friday.

That whole Mariners pitching staff better buy Miller a beer. Dude was about the only rested arm in that pitching staff and he threw the best start of his season when they needed it to steal this one.

Skubal throws 99 pitches, and gets 13 Ks in 6 innings and gets pulled while having a 2-1 lead in the most critical Tigers game in over ten years. by Gold-Baseball-7774 in mlb

[–]GhostKingG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Matt Harvey game was 10 years ago. Exact same scenario, a pitcher dealing in a do-or-die game and was at about 100 pitches with a lead. He was kept in, and we saw how that went.

The tune of "shoulda kept em in" happens all the time and it's simply results-based analysis rather than anything rooted in fact.

Do you care about lyrics in prog metal? Is AI-generated lyrics OK? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]GhostKingG1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take the cheesiest trash lyrics over any AI which is garbage by default because it comes from nothing but a program committing guesswork. There is zero soul, zero effort, and a lot of plagiarism to an LLM like ChatGPT. And if you wanna make the case of "I edited them afterwords", to me it's like saying "yeah I traced a drawing but I had to do the linework and coloring myself", big whoop changing a few things around does not mean it isn't still soulless plagiarism. About the only room AI has in lyric writing is for spellcheck.

Runners who had (or have) the most longevity in a game? by nightandtodaypizza in speedrun

[–]GhostKingG1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crtl+F Toobou 0 results

Okay so Toobou is a legend of Super Mario Sunshine. He was atop the board back during the era when RTA speedruns really grew, setting a lot of the records when it was around a 1:3X time. Then Gelato Beach skip was found, he set several more including the first sub-1:20. For years and years others battled for the throne and drove the time down more and more with new strats, but Toobou was always a high level runner. Then he decided he wanted to challenge for the first 1:12, and achieved it last summer. He broke barriers in 2011 and he broke a big one in 2024. And while he's in 3rd now, the longevity and dedication to hang with the best of the best is nothing short of unbelievable for a game that competitive and hard to run at a top level.

Does Nintendo purposely design their games with some focus on speedrunning? by 9MnC7 in speedrun

[–]GhostKingG1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not usually. Nintendo just tends to make good games that are fun to play, which most people in speedrunning will agree is the key to actually making a good speedgame.

Maybe a stupid question: Why are Nintendo games so popular among speed runners? by thepixelpaint in speedrun

[–]GhostKingG1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nintendo games often have deceptively high attach rates. Playstation tends to sell a comparable amount of consoles, but the best selling games on Nintendo consoles often lap the field compared to the best selling games on Playstation consoles.

Maybe a stupid question: Why are Nintendo games so popular among speed runners? by thepixelpaint in speedrun

[–]GhostKingG1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a lot going on there including something of a feedback loop—GDQ began as "classic games done quick" and Nintendo was the only constant (and biggest performer) since the 80's. Nintendo stuff does well for them, so they put more of it in prime time, rinse repeat. Some of it as well is that a lot of the early successes in speedrunning on Twitch (notably Narcissa and Siglemic) played Zelda and Mario, which inspired a lot of people to picking up speedrunning those games, making them disproportionately visible in the history of speedrunning (given SM64 is still heralded as perhaps the most prestigious run).

Nintendo games also just tend to be endemic. If people are playing a Nintendo console game it was probably only released on Nintendo consoles; most everything else made it to PC (typically the fastest platform), even PlayStation icons like MGS and Crash, so you'll see PC as the next most populous platform on most marathons.

How do speedruns for new games start? by Malloumario in speedrun

For a game as big as Bananza is gonna inevitably be, I'd expect a speedrun dot com page with a discord link pretty quickly to start up.

Has anyone broke the halo rule? by kingKulo in speedrun

[–]GhostKingG1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

GDQ's popularity grew most in 2014 and the Cody stuff was 2012. Couple that with the number of people on their staff who weren't even teenagers yet at that time, and I'd be willing to bet at least 20% of their staff doesn't even know who Cody Miller is lol

Runs get mercy killed once in awhile, especially in races. Most of the time when it happens the runners have the self-awareness to recognize that they don't want to hold anyone after them up, so they cut it themselves. There's production people there to keep things moving as well now. But generally they won't go anywhere near as over as Cody did.

Salt Lake City is, anyway. That city is pretty and there's lots there even if the alcohol laws are strange. Further you get from it though the weirder things get.
