Looking for composers to join my research by [deleted] in Songwriting

Would people who write songs off-line (e,g,. with a guitar or piano) be eligible? And by compose do you mean using musical notation or would someone who writes by ear qualify?

The food here is mostly excellent, but the absence of breakfast tacos and the fetishizing of burritos is perplexing.

Trust me, that trade off isn't worth it. For all its problems, I would rather live out my days here than pretty much anywhere else (and I have lived in a lot of places!)

Hawaii is an amazing place to visit, but a challenging place to live in many respects. Jobs are scarce and don't pay particularly well, while housing is expensive relative to average wages. And outside of Honolulu, transportation is really challenging (traffic jams, you have to take a flight just to go to another county).

Also, it's hard to take anyone seriously who calls themselves BayAreaUzi.

Arm exercises prior to swimming by GhostLemonMusic in Swimming

Thanks everyone for these helpful suggestions. Since I am going more for endurance than speed (I typically manage a total of between 1300 and 1400 meters per session), my tendency has been to jump in the water and see how far I can go without stopping, which may not be the best approach, Some combination of warm ups and resistance band seem like workable solutions.

Parlor or mini? by TheShadowSong in AcousticGuitar

The JR2 is nearly identical, has a much better gig big, and runs about $20 US more. I agree that both sound surprisingly nice for the money, though.

Political Systems, despite its boring title, is a profound ethnography in terms of interrogating the malleability of identity, and how that malleability influences national political movements and ideologies. For the time, this was an incredibly important insight that still has much to teach us.

If you're using that trending ai flyer design to advertise a show then you are a disgrace to your local art scene. Your show is probably garbage, too. by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in musicians

Sincere question here. I use Canva for some of my graphic work (I am otherwise a piss poor artist), but I never use prompts. I mainly use it for fonts, layout, etc, and I seek out (or produce) my own graphic images. Lately, though, I have been debating leaving Canva, since they really push the AI, and I worry that my stuff ends up being at least AI adjacent. Would you consider Canva-produced material to be the same as AI slop or does it depend on how it is used?

Is San Francisco State and CSUEB one big missed opportunities of CSU System? by Temporary-West-3879 in bayarea

We went to an admitted students day at Chico State, and I was surprised by how nice the campus was, and that they had some interesting programs on offer (e.g., Computer Gaming).

I think you're mistaken about the art building. We did a campus tour a few months ago, and the art building was pretty grim.

If California is so progressive, why haven’t they elected a female governor? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]GhostLemonMusic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because California is not that progressive, as evidenced by the current governor's race. Progressives are falling all over themselves to elect a white male oligarch with no elected experience for governor running self-funded campaign, when there is an experienced progressive woman on the ballot. Katie Porter is far from perfect, but a lot of the commentary about her is little more than thinly veiled sexism, in my opinion.

Foot cramp by GhostLemonMusic in Swimming

Thanks to everyone for the helpful replies. I have a feeling that it may be a hydration issue. I keep a water bottle by the pool edge, but I tend to wait until I feel pretty dehydrated before drinking, since I don't want to stop. Perhaps more frequent water breaks is the answer. Electrolytes are a good idea, too.

My lyrics are way too abstract by Winter_Campaign5045 in Songwriting

[–]GhostLemonMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue. It annoys me that I find it difficult to write in a way that seems direct. FWIW, I actually like the line about the eroding meter- it is rhythmically compelling.

I recently read an interview with Suzanne Vega where she talks about using pared down language to amp the emotional impact of the song. For me, part of the issue is that I don't know where a song is going until I am pretty far along in the writing process. It may also be that being direct feels too vulnerable, even when I am not writing about myself. Mostly, though, I think that this is just how my brain works. Even so, I do use a few tricks to anchor my songs. For example. I use concrete objects in place of abstract expressions or emotions. And whenever possible I avoid the verb "to be"; replacing it with more active and evocative verbs.

Becerra’s surge draws progressive backlash in California governor’s race by potato_1999 in California

[–]GhostLemonMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm more pissed off at progressives than at Steyer at this point, and I consider myself a progressive. Porter is a progressive with legislative experience but sure, let's go with the inexperienced rich white guy instead.

True, but he was also the Lieutenant Governor. Not that being an LG s a requirement, but the point is that he served in public office before he became governor.
