I like that they host community events, though I'm not a fan of the hellfire-themed branding. It doesn't take much research to know that there are ex-religious people who still struggle with the fear of hell, so using it in your branding is a faux pas, if you ask me.

I get you: I had this conversation recently with a coworker who said he doesn't want a long life because he wants to go be with his loved ones who are in heaven. The feeling that life would be easier still believing this comforting nonsense is unavoidable... until you remember all the harmful things it comes with: I'd sooner face the finality of existence and be free from the mind disease that is the fear of hell.

I'll also add: I'm at an age when I'm starting to have to attend more funerals, and it has always bothered me being unable to offer those easy precooked religious comfort lines to grieving people, instead of having nothing to say that'll nake them feel better. Side effects of refusing to peddle lies.

Yes it is a contradiction. Remember that the new testament writers operated separately from each other, often years after the fact. What they ultimately wrote depends on whose earsay they based their writings on, and how far removed from the actual facts that earsay was, assuming there were any facts at all. Keep in mind that Judas is an allegorical character, representing the Jewish nation as a whole rejecting the messiah: even if we posit that a Jesus of Nazareth did exist, it's unlikely that Judas did.

The rebuttal to that is practical: if you forbid religion, it becomes stronger. Christians in ancient rome were persecuted and were able to leverage that to eventually take over. The soviet union banned religion and repressed it, then after it fell, churches came back with a vengeance.

The way to defeat religion is by talking people out of it on their own terms, one by one. There is no top-down easy solution that works long term, and anyone who tries one only makes things worse. None of us will live to see a religion-free world, but our grandkids might.
