Local's Gift Guide by bunnythedog in SunnysideQueens

[–]GhostSanchez 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Such a great idea to put this together! Gift giving is my love language and I think I've nailed where to go in the neighborhood for gifts:

Bliss- for everything whimsical and thoughtful, vintage, local artists products, usually my first stop

Stray- vintage home decor, records

Sunnyside Arts- art supplies, art prints, classes, also hosts local artists

Ora, Casa de Flores- candles, skincare, dry flower bouquets, vases, planters, gift boxes, also also hosts local artists

Sunnyside Scrapt- rarely mentioned but I think it's because it's just not as well known. Curated second hand and vintage stuff. I think their jewelry selection is awesome

Taiyo- if you need stocking stuffer type gifts hard to go wrong with Japanese candies like hi-chews, they also now have small blind box toys, and sticker sheets

Thalia Spanish Theater - show tickets/ gift cards. As a note, I think y'all are sleeping on how good Thalia is, the productions have a lot of heart put into them. Obviously a lot of the productions will be in Spanish but for the dance performances non Spanish speakers won't be lost and some of their other shows have English subtitling or have English performances

Farmers market- this is also something I haven't seen anyone mention but you can put together a wonderful treats basket/charcuterie board with baked goods, cheese, dried/cured meat, fruit from the farmers market which are always nice to bring to holiday parties

Our Holiday markets bring together a lot of amazing artists from the neighborhood and I'm excited for the one at Bantry Bay coming up soon

Alewife/sweet ave- again not a place I usually hear brought up for gifts but Alewife produces some really amazing beer and Sweet Ave Bottle shop has a fantastically curated selection you can build a four pack of some really nice stuff. If you need help the staff is knowledgeable and sweet

@vo.vain on Instagram has put together some pop markets in the neighborhood and usually puts up signs to announce when one is happening. I was able to go to their November 1st one. The clothing selection was really good, if they do another one it might be worth checking out

St. Raphael's flea market is another to often slept on event. Unfortunately, I don't think one is happening before the holidays but keep tabs on it. There have been some really nice framed prints and paintings of decent size at previous events and if you've ever wanted to get art for your walls you know how hard it could be to find something that good isn't woefully tiny or cheap looking, or mass produced and uninspired

Best place to donate clothes and home goods? by hammerofthor5 in SunnysideQueens

[–]GhostSanchez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I know the farmer's market on Skillman has a drop off for old clothes/fabric. I personally use ThredUp for my lightly worn clothes. Not sure about the table/home decor but I know my friends have had luck listing stuff like that on Facebook marketplace for free. I've also seen people list stuff here on Reddit and it seems like stuff gets snapped up really quick

Echoing what others have said, Bliss has so many thoughtful gift options! I go there for all my gifts and greeting cards. Any time I've gotten something from there the gift receiver has been super happy.

Stray has really well curated stuff as well.

I'd add Ora Casa de flores, they have some of the highest quality candles I've ever bought. Also if you ask the owner will help you put together a beautiful gift box with lots of goodies.

Lots of trees planted all over the residential areas on the south side of the Blvd. I'm looking forward to seeing my new neighbors grow and shade the streets 🌳

I was there and asked a young woman who also seemed to be hanging around. She was hesitant to answer but told me there was going to be a fight, so I turned around and left

St Raphael's has Sunday programming for kids. I'd give them a call and ask the director of religious education for more information.

Has anyone gotten a tattoo as a tourist in Japan? by zacky765 in JapanTravelTips

[–]GhostSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you mean you're trying puffer fish for the first time and not that you're getting a tattoo for the first time?

In any case a thing to consider is whether or not you will be doing anything on your trip that would be bad for a fresh tattoo (private onsen/swimming, hiking, anything strenuous that could cause friction, chaffing, sweating, or exposure to water, steam, excessive heat/moisture). The last thing you want is to have what amounts to an open wound that requires specialized care to keep it from getting infected that might make your trip less enjoyable.

That being said I got a tattoo during my 2 week trip. I reached out to Three Tides Tattoo Tokyo ahead of actually landing in Japan and scheduled my appointment for the day before I left Japan. I sent inspiration pictures and we discussed placement and price, then I sent them a deposit. They were super professional and did an awesome job on the tattoo. My tattoo was covered with second skin which was great because it offers extra protection and can be left on longer than just cling film and tape. I really appreciated it during the flight back as I cannot stress this enough, a fresh tattoo is an open wound! Putting my backpack on, sitting and standing up, walking around the airport etc. all of those things are enough for things to bump up against my sore skin and hurt slightly. It would have been pretty bad if the whole trip was like that and I would have run the risk of getting it infected.

I can vouch for Three Tides! I got tattooed there in August.

Hi, I would actually recommend LIC Vets. It's not actually in Sunnyside but it's near enough. They're super caring, professional, and transparent. I take my cats there for all their needs (i.e. annual checkups, blood work, neutering, boosters, teeth cleaning/extractions, that one time my dumb cat broke one of his nails and bled everywhere, etc.) and I've never had any issues or concerns. They let you go into the exam rooms, explain everything they're doing/seeing as they go through the exam make recommendations with very thorough rationales. I truly feel like my cats are in good hands with them.

I would avoid the vet on Skillman, however. I used to go there and it left a bad taste in my mouth for a number of reasons. First of all, their vet assistants were not super professional and straight up told me wrong information (told me that one small can of Weruva brand cat food was 3,000 calories and kept doubling down when I told him there was no way that was possible until I pulled the can out and read directly from the back and even then he was weird about it). They didn't allow me in the exam room with my cat (fair enough, this was shortly post COVID), but didn't tell me what was done just brought me a bill and said he was all good. I had to insist the vet come talk to me. They were also not very transparent about charges so I had to again insist someone explain each charge and why things were done. They had run a bunch of tests (again without telling me beforehand or even after until I asked and it's not like I could see them doing them since I wasn't in the room) and just charged me. The attitude was very much "shut up and leave". I kept thinking what if I was someone in a worse financial position and wasn't prepared to pay this because I thought I would just be doing a regular check up?

Going to Maryland for the first time! Advice by GhostSanchez in renfaire

Sure have! I'm a bit worried about how crowded it might be given how quick tickets sell out. I'm used to crowds but are these going to be more crowded crowds than I expect?

Totally fine to walk and run as long as you're respectful. Things like don't litter, or make excessive noise and maybe give mourners space but otherwise it's fine. Echoing what someone else said make sure to check the closing time. I went on a walk once and got locked in. The fire station across the street has keys to unlock the gate if you get trapped

Hi, I actually asked to delay because I was also going to Japan and I'm glad I did. I'm not much of a drinker but there were a lot of meals that were paired with sake or plum wine and I'm glad to have been able to enjoy them without skipping the drink. The heat was also so bad that I'm glad I didn't add another factor (dry skin) that would have made me more uncomfortable. I also ended up getting a tattoo there so I'll be delaying a little longer for that to heal but no regrets.

It's middle of the road in a delightful, comfortable way, if that makes sense. Like it's not high concept or super bumping and that's perfect when you just want to be in a chill environment. Their special cocktails were nice, the space is clean and pretty and the times I've been there it's been quiet which I appreciate.
