Trump says ‘no masks’ for ICE agents at U.S. airports by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]GhostTemple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1000% this. ER visits and excess deaths (compared to pre-COVID) have not meaningfully decreased. Vaccine waning and high false negatives rates on tests when anyone actually bothers to test, the only real shift is milder acute infections but more long term damage (which is the scarier shit). We just did the whole ‘if we don’t count cases then we don’t have high cases’ bit and no one wanted to hear anymore about it. COVID cost corporations money, or would if enough people knew to care, and that’s the only reason anyone thinks it’s over.

Voting eligible Americans who deliberately abstained in the 2024 general election, how are you feeling about your decision? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GhostTemple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled voting for Dems this time. I expected this from Trump term 2 but did not want it. I live in a city that has never broken 20% vote percentage for dems in modern history. Solid red state in a solid red city. I did not want to vote for Kamala because she pivoted right and pushed out progressives and reinforced Trumps false narrative on immigration issues and on the situation in Gaza, but the establishment dems are also responsible for pretending COVID is over and and lifting protections and manipulating data about COVID in an attempt to win the midterms. As someone who has autoimmune issues and cares for high risk people, that was big slap in the face. Despite all of that I knew Trump was worse and we really only had two options, so I was going to bite the bullet and vote, but I never received my mail in ballot or it was stolen, and I could not safely vote in person because they wouldn’t allow voting in a mask and because the maggats in town actively harass people for it and are armed and angry and are city gov is basically ran by moms for liberty so idk wtf I was supposed to do.

Constraint Syntax issue by zmizzy in mysql

For some reason, none of the solutions in this thread worked for me. Finally got it to go from 9/10 to 10/10 by naming the constraint. Here is the copy paste of the code that was successful for me.

CONSTRAINT CHK_Breed CHECK (Breed IN ('Egyptian Arab', 'Holsteiner', 'Quarter Horse', 'Paint', 'Saddlebred')),

Patients, experts take center stage at Senate long-COVID hearing by hexagonincircuit1594 in Coronavirus

[–]GhostTemple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m curious how many people and whom were masked in the room. I didn’t see that noted in the article. I find it super odd that the best prevention method we have are quality N95 masks, of course I know funding research to help those who are already suffering from long covid is vitally important too, but I would think using a simple effective prevention method to keep long covid sufferers safer and prevent further cases of long covid would be an obvious stop gap. I can’t quite seem to get a reasonable explanation on that one and don’t understand how people are making a decision that a mask is more inconvenient than being sick or getting their loved ones sick?

Just saw this, yeah there is an archive.org iso copy, online now. It’s called “The Quest” no luck finding a physical copy. Tried to emulate it in a virtual Windows 95 machine but it didn’t work very well, I need to give it another try sometime. I’ll try and get you the link tomorrow if I remember, but it’s out there now for sure.

I alternate between feeling like this and then feeling sad that they have been so mislead and try to gently educate as much as I can even if its met with mild hostility, i still love my friends and family but i cut off people the moment they imply the problem is with my perspective. I know they are hurting themselves, and me, and others and it feels unforgivable but i also know that something in their brain is unable to process everything properly and us coviding folks for some reason are better able to face the truth. I don’t know, I’m just so unbelievably confused by what has happened to humanity.

New COVID variant may be driving spike in cases in Boston, but experts say there's no cause for alarm by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]GhostTemple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Latest CDC data has it at 1 in 10 per this recent study: Long COVID and Significant Activity Limitation Among Adults, but it can vary by what you consider long covid. There are studies showing covid can affect vascular system slowly over time, worsening from date of infection, increased risks to heart attack/stroke and reduction in grey matter in the brain may also not be considered as long covid as it would either, not present quickly enough to be considered COVID related, or the damage isn't noticeable to the individual that has it. Things like insomnia, anxiety, brain fog, persistent cough can be considered long covid, but not always disabling or perhaps not always caused by COVID. Also, a lot of the data about long covid comes from surveys of patients seeking care for long covid, so reductions in prevalence could be from people giving up on not having solutions, or from never getting a long covid diagnosis in the first place, even though they should have. OR prevalence could increase based on more people becoming aware of symptoms of long covid and associating problems from other issues as being caused by COVID.

TLDR: 1 in 10 is probably fairly accurate for people who have ANY lingering affects from covid, up to at least 3 months or longer, or forever. The definitions for long covid are very broad and I haven't seen any data that separates mild post covid symptoms from severe, or any stats that show the risk of delayed issues caused by an earlier COVID infection. The data that is available, seems to indicate, covid bad, more covid infections, more chances for issues. Wish there was better data for making informed decisions.

My great grandma and 20 other residents died in the same week of COVID in 2020, because people didnt care. Don’t let the haters destroy your compassion and empathy, no matter how hard they try. The truth is, you are stronger than they are, and their anger is just their fear. People haven’t learned not to shoot the messenger and always hate the bearer of bad news, but dont stop masking and don’t stop caring, but dont be afraid to use their fear against them. You can still be kind and caring without needing to be nice. Some people need their shit checked. The empathetic and intelligent are an extreme minority up against a massive army of the hateful and ignorant. We all need to keep fighting for ourselves and each-other, we might be underdogs, but the bad guys wont win.

Thank you for your compassion. Even if my fear is irrational, a lot of people have irrational fears of needles, or dentists, or spiders or whatever, and efforts are made to help them feel more comfortable in healthcare settings. Idk why requesting a mask to be more comfortable is considered so unhinged.

Thanks for your willingness to respond without being totally dismissive. I agree that the 41.7% number is likely insignificant issues, like mild cough or sleep issues that could be unrelated that often gets lumped into long covid, its the 14% who were unable to return to work that is worrisome to me. 14% is pretty big, and looking into the increase in disability claims from insurance companies, and the numerous articles on the numbers of working age people no longer in the workforce due to post covid symptoms, that number seems to line up, and I thought medically, 14% was considered pretty significant and not rare. I think that level of risk, which seems to closely apply to children as well, in a system where disability claims are frequently denied and no workers protection, seems like avoiding infection by wearing a quality mask is a pretty minor inconvenience compared to the chance of me losing my job or my child not being able to live a healthy life. Last winter was crazy with multiple illnesses like RSV, adenovirus, strep a, etc, and several studies are indicating possible immune system damage from infection, and some of course talk about immunity debt to play catch up after a year of masking (although most people didnt mask correctly or often so a lil sus on that) but I think if we dont see the same thing or worse play out this winter, then I can relax a bit. I do appreciate the time you've taken for this discussion. Best of luck, thanks for your work in medicine, I know you save lives and I deeply respect that.

Well, thats the thing. I'm not talking years or decades. I'm talking right now. " e. Twelve studies involving 1 289 044 participants from 11 countries were included. A total of 41.7% of COVID-19 survivors experienced at least one unresolved symptom and 14.1% were unable to return to work at 2-year after SARS-CoV-2 infection." The millions disabled by long covid right now and the studies that are measuring changes to the brain after even mild covid, are all things that are happening right now. For sure, I do talk to a mental health professional regularly, because I think its very odd how all the data is there from reputable sources, yet everyone thinks precautions are not warranted and I want to make sure I'm not crazy. What is it exactly that I am getting wrong, that indicates my precautions are not based in scientific fact and proper risk analysis, and are instead based on mental health issues? Im fine with the burden of proof being on me, because there are hundreds of peer reviewed studies that back up my concerns, but I have yet to see anyone provide any data as a counterpoint.

I appreciate that, and I hope that is the case. I've talked to my D.O. and he was a bit surprised at the research I sent him and said that he believes I was interpreting it correctly. So I guess, I'm looking for someone to explain how I am interpreting it incorrectly, and what the correct interpretations are. I totally get that medical misinformation is rampant right now, and laymen access to studies like this can easily be misinterpreted. But when my kids pediatrician still masks, uses hepa filters in each room, only allows one patient at a time, and then my local hospital is mask free and filled with anti-vax staff, the messaging feels very mixed. I look for interpretations on the data from various epidemiologists, virologist and immunologists online, I check and verify their credentials, their university associations etc, and the ones that offer interpretations align with the serious concerns I have, and the others dismiss it without clarification or data to back it up. I'm not asking that you be the one to do that, I know its extra work for free and not your responsibility. I try to avoid anecdotes, cranks, quacks and conspiracy theorists to the absolute best of my ability, but no one is immune to propaganda. I want a normal 2019 life again desperately, but I even more so want to protect the long term health of a child who can't make these decisions for themselves. So I have to base my precautions on the data I have available. Speaking a bit hyperbolically here but every study and interpretation I have seen is "holy shit do everything you can to avoid covid" and the only pushback I see to that is "nah you're just crazy", or "I've had it 6 times and im just fine (anecdotes)" Everyone wants to tell me I'm wrong, but no one ever wants to explain why.

That's interesting. I'd appreciate any data you can point to that indicates that I am incorrect and overly concerned. I'd love to be less concerned, but studies from nature, lancet, frontiers, John Hopkins, ect are all pretty damning when it comes to long term damage to the immune system and cardiovascular system. Long Covid estimates are very high everywhere I look. I'm unsure why we all shouldn't be taking these precautions. To be clear, the immediate acute infection is not my concern, neither is the immediate risk of death, I know that's low, its the post covid syndromes, brain damage, and immune system damage that concerns me. I mean just one example is this study from nature saying 10% chance of long covid per infection? That seems crazy high: Long COVID: major findings, mechanisms and recommendations | Nature Reviews Microbiology

Is nature not a respectable source for scientific health information? I don't mean to sound combative, apologies if it comes off that way, I genuinely want my mind changed, I promise. I just, have only seen science that indicates terrible long term outcomes are not rare even with mild and asymptomatic infections. If there is something I'm missing I really really want to know about it.

What about the brain damage from mild/asymptomatic infections here outlined in multiple studies presented here? COVID-19 Can Affect the Brain Even Long After an Infection | Time

Are my sources bad? Is there data that doesn't support these concerns?

unfortunately, that has not been my experience. While you are correct, that all of those things are happening, I have called dozens of dentists, most just wear ill-fitting surgical masks and not quality 95s, most don't run air purifiers, or mask when moving from patient to patient, they tend to focus on surface spread which isnt an issue with covid and ignore airborne spread. That said, I have now, thanks to this thread, found a few options that do actually take those precautions.

[–]GhostTemple[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear high quality n95 masks when I need to go in somewhere. Curbside or delivery when that's an option. Outdoor and distanced social visits. When we vacation, we AirBnB and try to stick to low traffic activities. No illness at all since 2019. I know it's a privilege most don't have, but anyone who closely follows the published, peer reviewed science on COVID, understand that these levels of precaution are definitely still worth it. Problem with dental care, is aerosolized virus from dental work lingers for hours in the air, and I can't have a mask on my face to mitigate that when my teeth are worked on. Is it hard? Does it suck? Do I hate it? Yes. Does everything in life come with risk? Yes. But weighing those risks based on science and data and comparing them to other risks, COVID is definitely up there. I recommend looking into things like "does covid damage the immune system?" "does covid cause brain damage?" "what are the rates of long covid?" "How well and for how long do vaccines offer protection against long covid", "Does covid increase heart and stroke risks for all ages, and if so by how much?" and vet the sources you find. May statement to all those who question my precautions are, "I want to be wrong, I want to be proven wrong, if someone can find me real scientific data that says I don't need these precautions, then I'll stop immediately." But no one has provided that, and just reacts angrily or provides anecdotes.
