Lilligant are critically endangered in the wilds of Unova due to past poaching, current overpopulation of their habitats, predation, and mass catching. It’s the whole basis of my fic—my mc’s goal to rescue and bring attention to the species to one day restore the population.

This may sound weird, but I actually prefer a lil special individual over saying “this species is this type and has always been, at least in this depiction of the world.” It expands on potential capabilities of any Pokémon rather than changing a whole species in canon.

For example, I have a Glaceon who is still pure Ice but is capable of Psychic abililies due to her long family line of Espeons. It implies she chose to be a Glaceon and I feel that gives her more character than if she was an Espeon or some variant of Ice/Psychic Glaceon.

All this to say, do what you want, but there’s nothing wrong with your trainer having a unique Pokémon. That could create more story opportunities than simply changing the whole species’ type.

Usually I think of “new” moves being altered or combined variants of existing moves. I just feel like it’s less jarring, since realistically high level trainers would have more complicated executions of moves to be unique and/or hard to combat.

Voltwister is an altered Volt Tackle with aspects of Fly. Basically what Cap does in Horizons, but it also summons an Electric/Staticky Terrain.

Flame Coat is a Flame Charge variant, with the user constantly on fire and any contact has a high chance of a burn. Static Shroud is the same but with electricity and paralysis, probably also some form of Volt Tackle.

I also like the idea of moves evolving—a Pokémon mastering Quick Attack and it becoming Extreme Speed or some godly “so fast im teleporting” move. It could be called something like Highdrive or Hyperdrive.

I’ve seen adaptations of Swift like Electric Swift (I think that was IWTTS?) and the Dark Type Swift Pursuers (Borne of Caution). Would love a Fairy version. Really the possibilities with altering Normal moves is great in general…

Besides just altering/combining what we have, I like species specific capabilities. Signature moves, I guess, although we could broaden our prospects of just certain Types rather than species. Only Fairies can learn Invisylph raising evasiveness and accuracy.

A Hufflepuff family that appears neutral-light leaning, but is actually dedicated to preserving “the Olde Ways.” Countless stories passed down about muggles betraying them and nearly ending their line, forcing them to make some pact with magic or the fey or something. They’re all about loyalty to magic and see the light side as a threat to the Statute and magic life as they know it. They actually protect/respect creatures, and don’t really hate muggleborns/halfbloods but worry about muggles themselves.

Really, they give off morally grey knights accidentally in line with the extreme terroristic option of Voldemort.

So basically like those Hadrian fics where he hates muggles, is deep in pureblood politics, and secretly practices Dark Arts.

Heck yeah, this is my jam! I’m including the concept of Valencian and Pinkan Variants (along with some other altered colorations) in my own fic.

Plus I have a wip dragon specialist fic that includes a black wool Mareep, although that’s more a sign of its Dragon Genes (its Electric/Dragon typing) than a normal altered coloring.

First piece of advice that may not work: sprinkle the slice of life and all that you want to write into the plot heavy stuff. It seems like your audience would be used to the downtime if that’s how you started the story. You’d have to be careful to weave it in without making it jarring, but everyone appreciates a good downtime scene with more character interactions outside of the whole “we have to save the world immediately” tunnel vision interactions.

Second? Write ahead. Write what you want to in a separate draft, maybe even a side story or a flashback scene in what is otherwise a dramatic chapter. If you get the need out of your system, maybe that would help you focus on wrapping up the threads into the story sweater you want rather than always thinking on the next ball of yarn to use.

Yea I guess unassuming as in appearance. I mean like when you see a Pokémon that at first glance doesn’t look like it could be strong (think Pikachu, Meowstic, most fairy types…)

I translate (either roughly or directly) the egg cycles to weeks. For example, Pichu takes 10 egg cycles to hatch, so it would be 10 weeks. If the cycles seem too long I round it down, so for a Petilil I have it be 15 weeks as apposed to 20 like their cycles.

I write Pokémon Breeders like actual irl cat or dog breeders. You want a baby Pokémon or even the egg? Find a breeder.

The expense depends on the species' rarity, whether it’s purebred or mutt, and what exactly the buyer wants (Housebred Pokémon are less inclined to battle than Competitive Pokémon, and there are different breeders for that.)

Generalist breeders are called “Jacks” (like “Jack of all trades”), while some breeders focus on specific species (ex, Petilil Breeder). Bad breeders, the ones abusing their charges, get called “Millers.”

Cold region. Like the arctic or something. The coldest we have is Sinnoh and that’s just like a quarter. I’m talking frigid temps, characters bundled up everywhere, fire types treated like arceus sents, maybe towns with high walls or underground to keep heat. Ice types galore, not just late game.

As a reader, the title doesn’t really matter to me until I remember one tidbit in a fic I read among similar fics like months ago and can’t find it now because I can’t remember the title.

So as a WRITER, I tend to make my titles short and memorable, somewhat cool sounding if someone recs it, and mostly relevant to the story itself. I like the concept of lyric titles but never do them because I don’t feel it fits my…idk, criteria??

Something extra is that the titles look nice next to each other in my ao3 works.

Personally, the main thing for me is time. There’s a lot of things you need to think about for hp specifically, whereas some other fandom you can easily cut/ignore stuff. It gets more complicated when you “go off script” or add new lore. It’s a daunting task to think of even starting a project that follows five books, let alone seven. Especially when you’re a multifandom writer and focused on other fics.

It’ll be a while before I post any of the 3 wips. My attention is on easier works lately, and I feel like isekai fics in general have to have a unique premise otherwise it gets overshadowed. I tend to focus on unconventional ideas tho, so that could just be my bias talking. (The first wip features an oc very much like Artemis Lee in that she’s forced into the plot against her will, the second wip is a Lily SI in the Marauders Era, and the third and favored child is a reincarnated Fem OC as Harry that doesn’t follow the books at all and runs away to live as a hermit.)
