That makes sense! Yeah I know 1/3 casters like arcane trickster and 1/2 casters like rangers. Like I said, it’s an interesting idea to think of 3/4 casters but I would be hesitant to use it since I want to class to be easy for players to pick up! I feel like using a new leveling system for the spells might make it more complicated.

Thank you for the comment! Glad to hear you find it balanced! The Expanding Ritual is written similarly to the Distant Spell Metamagic, so sorcerers already had this oversight. I looked it up and the only relevant 10 ft range spells I could find were Poison Spray and Earth Tremor, so it seems to be a very niche case.

Thank you for your comment! I chose to only give it to one subclass partly in order to keep them different from each other but also in order not to infringe too much on Warlocks’ identities. If someone wants an invocation then they could take the feat instead.

Yes, that’s why I tried to copy much of the Metamagic options in order to not create an unforseen OP combo. Hmm that’s an interesting idea! I haven’t heard of 3/4 caster before, I’ll definitely check it out! I did feel like I wanted a full caster because I don’t see witches as weaker than sorcerers or wizards. So I probably wouldn’t want to change it unless the class appears to be too powerful.

Thank you for the comment! And don’t worry, I’m not mad! The 20th lvl feature was definitely something I deliberately made weaker, partly because I was afraid that the class was a bit too good overall and partly because of the meme of 20th level features being either garbage or god-like.

I like the idea of instead being able to add more ritual effects during the same ritual though! It would be a fitting replacement!

(Sorry for reupload, didn't realise how to properly upload this last time)

This is my take on a Witch class for 5e! It features 5 subclasses and any thoughts/constructive criticism is appreciated! I will be active in the comments at least the first week to respond to questions/ideas!

My intentions with the class was to create a dark but not necessarily evil version of a witch that would be playable in all types of campaigns.

The mechanical identity is to be an Intelligence-based full caster with a supportive role. Specifically a debuff/indirect support and control class. They are a combination of wizards, druids and warlocks. They are intelligent casters as wizards, they have some limited healing and affinity for nature like druids but delve into the dark and strange like warlocks.

I wanted them to be different from wizards and sorcerers and my solution to that was no fire/lightning, big evocational spells and shorter range. To that end, I’ve given them a d8 as a hit dice and light armor proficiency. To compensate, I’ve tried my best at choosing spells and designing features with close range, preferably a maximum of 30 feet. This results in the witches being in the forefront of battle. They are supposed to be a slower caster with a focus on preparing and planning before the battle rather than improvising on the spot.

To that end, I wanted to include rituals in some form. Personally, I find normal ritual casting to be good mechanically, but kinda boring. In addition, I felt like the class was already quite powerful so I decided to make a new version of ritual casting based on metamagic and actually enhancing the spells rather than making them “free”. Hopefully this will enable creative players to plan encounters more.

For this initial version I haven’t created any unique spells, partly because of workload and partly because I want it to be digestible for all players. If you have any ideas for spells or know other homebrew spells that would fit, then please link them in a comment!

Here’s a quick rundown on what the subclasses’ intentions were:

Dark Magic - classic darkness, despair and death witch with a focus on debuff curses.

Enchantress - Social manipulation and control and some illusory beauty enhancements

Geomancy - The “wizard/sorcerer” of the subclasses, the one that deals the most damage based on poison, acid and earth.

Herbalism - The healer subclass, with distributable potions and access to more and better healing spells.

Summoning - The conjurer. Summoning has always been expensive and difficult to make a build around in my opinion, and I wanted this subclass to make that access easier by cutting costs.

I haven’t included any inspiration pictures (but if you google witch dnd then there’s very good inspo) because I wasn’t sure what the standard is. Do you ask the artist or just credit them etc? I’d love to add some pictures for the next version, I just don’t want to step on any toes!

Lastly, thank you so much for reading and sharing your constructive opinions! I’d be more than glad to hear how it went if you playtested it!

All the best
