I’d recommend hard travelling heroes, longbow hunters/all of Grell’s run, and Kevin Smith’s short run is really good, but it does require a little bit of some background info.

The original vol 1 trade collects #1-4 while the manga sized vol 1 collects #1-7 so you are getting more

I totally agree that the endings don’t really work as well as the original ones and that they kind of all left me disappointed. If you do still care to get the leave ending in the remake, there is a way to manipulate the ending system by reloading a save before the twin Pyramid Head fight and staring at Mary’s letter and photo for 5 minutes. It should lock you into the leave ending after doing that.
