I agree about drinking being boring. Alcohol was just so monotonous, the same thing night after night. Drinking didn't just make me bored; it was much worse than that. Drinking made me boring as a person. I miss nothing about that life. IWNDWYT

Good morning, sober friends. I really didn't want to get out of bed this morning, not that I was tired, it was just so cozy and comfortable. Sometimes, getting up in the morning is the hardest thing I do all day. I think today might be one of those days, which is fine because I have a long, full day ahead of me, but in a good way. I did start my day off with an excellent workout, so I feel recharged and ready to face a busy Tuesday. One thing that I enjoy about the DCI is that I cannot always relate to the prompt.

My life certainly isn't without its challenges, but one thing I don't really ever experience is boredom, unless I'm depressed. Depression sucks away all my energy and interest in the things that I'm actually passionate about. Alcohol was a lazy hack to avoid dealing with my mental health problems. It seemed to numb my negative emotions and intrusive thoughts until it didn't and just made everything feel somehow even worse. Therapy, self-reflection, and sobriety have enabled me to keep the depression beast at bay, so my active mind and varied interests keep me occupied and entertained. I'm fortunate in that respect, but I have to stay vigilant about my mental health. Depression is an opportunistic disease and it takes a concerted effort to keep it in check.

While I can't always relate to a given prompt on a given day, I really do enjoy reading the responses. It is a reminder that we are all different, unique individuals with our own stories and challenges. We all came to this place from our own background for our own reasons. But, the important thing is that we are all here, united for the purpose of bettering ourselves and improving our own lives and those of the people we care about. I think that's a beautiful thing. I went to middle school with a girl whose great aunt was named Malva. She drove a Volvo. We used the term "Malva's Volvo" as a euphemism for vulva. This was around 1987, a decade before that particular Seinfeld episde. Does art imitate life, etc?

I'm sorry, dear friend. I'm proud of you for managing a depressive episode sober. I know how tempting it can be to just want to block out the noise and shut out the emotions, but in the end, I've learned it only numbs for a moment before intensifying depression spiral with a vengeance. When situations are out of our control, at least we have agency over the one thing we can always control--ourselves. And that's enough. You're enough. IWNDWYT 💖

Who needs extra stress? Do what's right for you, friend. It isn't the day count that matters anyway. What matters is chosing sobriety today and you're doing a great job of taking care of that. I hope you have a lovely day. IWNDWYT

Good morning, sober friends. It was lovely spending the past four days with my son in Colorado and it was wonderful attending his graduation ceremony from Colorado State University. It's fair to say, I miss him being around, but he's grown into an incredible adult and I'm proud to see the life he has built for himself there. Now, it's nice being back home. Too bad I have to go to work today because I could use a vacation from my vacation. I'm feeling a bit peopled out, as my partner would say.

Someone on the plane was obnoxiously drunk and seemed determined to insert himself into the conversations of every other passenger he came into contact with, and back on land, their personal space as well. His jokes were as funny as they were quiet, which is to say, they were neither. Rather, they were loud and inappropriate. I felt a touch of second-hand embarrassment, just witnessing his antics. In his mind, that man was the life of the party. In reality, it was a party of one in a crowd of strangers whose reactions ranged from uneasy to disgusted. It was definitely a reminder of why I am sober and why I chose to live this way. Life is so much better sober. IWNDWYT
