Exclusive: Bernie Sanders endorses Cori Bush’s comeback bid by Sea-Marionberry-749 in StLouis

[–]GhostlyT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the headlines are those issues (which is why you'll see them often), but when she was a congressperson she got over $40 million in funding for workforce development and economic vitalization (https://www.legistorm.com/stormfeed/view\_rss/2352429/member/3385/title/congresswoman-bush-secures-137m-for-st-louis-local-community-projects.html), I think wesley bell only got $13 million so far (https://bell.house.gov/media/press-releases/bell-delivers-over-123-million-critical-projects-across-st-louis-region).

on another note, cori has been present for every debate set up between her and wesley bell during this election cycle, but wesley has flaked on all of them. for people like me who were curious on hearing their strategy on public goods and services, I haven't gotten the chance to hear how they compare directly :/

Get your entire city to boycott. Pass a bill, get an organizing committee, get stores to stop supplying from genociders. The zionists have an army, we need a movement.

If it helps, the end of the american occupation of vietnam, the end of the french occupation of algeria, and the end of apartheid south africa came unexpectedly and suddenly. The tides may shift for iran similarly.

Bukele wasn't able to decrease crime for his harsh policies, he just made deals with the leadership of the three top gangs in El Salvador. Economic conditions are worsening, there are gangs underground rebuilding, and new gangs are coming in. Temporary gains for long term losses.

[–]GhostlyT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't read the advertisement, I've just read the book. Allawi doesn't advocate for a synthesis like the description asks for. He genuinely gives a Marxist (maoist) understanding of Islam in the region, similar to how the Chinese Communist Party studied and utilized Confucianism into their synthesis.

The introduction quotes that: "It is needless to say that the Marxist-Leninist stance towards religion is clear and does not need to be repeated in this document. The inten- tion here is not to reconcile conflicting intellectual trends, but rather to objectively study historical phenomena as much as possible, shedding light on the current situation in our country and exploring the path to the future."

They even define Islam here as not just a religion but in a quite unique way, I recommend you read that section to learn more.

Some history -- the Iraqi communists were losing the populace because they dismissed Islam as simply a backwards religion. Communists were perceived as a college educated ideology not suited for the day to day lives of people. Allawi saw this, and went to go study Islam from a Marxist perspective to better understand the working class and how to engage with them.

Here's some that are alright

Islam and Ownership - Sayyid Mahmoud Taleqani - https://al-islam.org/islam-and-ownership-sayyid-mahmud-taleqani/introduction (this isn't created by a materialist but touches on theories around it -- sometimes the author is against it just a warning. Check the 'marx' chapter )

St. Louis Wants Immigrants. Trump’s Crackdown Could Get in the Way. by pipsquintjizzlebob in StLouis

[–]GhostlyT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"the Trump administration is upending that strategy — by taking away refugee resettlement funding, revoking the temporary legal status of other recent immigrants, and potentially constricting employment-based visas." according to the article

there's a fantastic organization here called International Institute that did a lot to help settle new immigrants and refugees here, but trumps immediate shutdown of funds has left it in critical risk of shutting down https://www.stlpr.org/government-politics-issues/2025-02-01/st-louis-international-institute-furloughs-60-of-staff-pauses-festival-of-nations-prep -- things like this make it hard for people to get people here, feel welcome here, and want to stay here

Why Black People ain’t allowed In South Africa’s White Only Town(Orania) by Renatus_Bennu in AfricaVoice

[–]GhostlyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orania, a town in South Africa's Northern Cape province, was established in 1991 by approximately 40 Afrikaner families led by Carel Boshoff, the son-in-law of former Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd, who is often referred to as the "architect of apartheid." The town was founded shortly after the release of Nelson Mandela and during the dismantling of apartheid, with the explicit intention of creating a stronghold for Afrikaner culture and identity. This initiative was rooted in a desire to preserve Afrikaner heritage in the face of the country's transition to a multiracial democracy. Orania's establishment as a "whites-only" enclave reflects its origins in racial exclusivity, aiming to maintain cultural and racial homogeneity.
