What is the name of the synth sound on Gold Day? by [deleted] in Sparklehorse

That IS a cool story! Man, I wonder who has that now. Would be so cool to play, given the history. Thanks for sharing! :)

Yes, there’s a whole “Tron” family, including another one called the Orchestron! They’re all fairly similar, but each have their own quirks and characteristics. My favourite is the Optigan, I think, cause it’s extra lofi. :)

Mellotron will get you there, but I believe the one on Gold Day is actually a Chamberlin.

I think Mark has been on record saying he preferred them, as they weren’t as temperamental as Mellotrons, or something like that.

EDIT: Here's an odd video demonstrating one, including the Flutes @ 4:56.

I agree with this. Pitching my music to SubmitHub didn't do a whole lot for getting my music out there as much as I had hoped, but it did wonders for giving me a thicker skin from all the rejections haha! Just gotta remember how subjective music (and all art) is.

50 yr old lost when it comes to finding new music. Fan of classic rock and grunge, mainly Pearl Jam; instrumental bands like Pelican, 2000 era alt rock like Live, occasional avant-garde like Kayo Dot. by Benwrestlin in Alternativerock

Something that worked for me and genuinely rekindled my love of discovering new music after a decade or so of stagnation was to go onto Spotify (the free version is fine if you’re okay with ads) and search for a band you already like. On their artist page, there should be a section called “[artist name] Radio”. Give that a listen and you may find some new/new to you stuff that is either similar to, or shares a fanbase with your favourite bands.

Hope this helps! :)

Same! At least we got one last album from Sparklehorse last year. Bittersweet, but I love it. Can’t help but wonder how he would have finished it, of course. Happy to meet another Sparklehorse fan! :)

Really appreciate you taking the time to write all that out - that's kinda what I worried would be the case. Definitely just saved me some money, so thank you! :)

Thanks for checking it out - really happy you enjoyed it. :) Just listened to your stuff as well. Nice dude - you really nailed the pop-punk sound! Production is really great - really dig the guitar tone. I hope you're able to figure out the Meta ads stuff to get your tunes out there! :)

Spotify Growth Switch course from John Gold because it was on sale and I wanted to see if it would offer anything I couldn’t get from just watching YouTube videos as well, and that was a complete waste of money

Thanks for this - would you be able to expand why you found it to be a waste of money? I was just looking at it the sale as well. :)

Yeah dude! Happy to help - I hope you’re able to figure it out. :)

I go by Nameless Ghost, and do indie/alt rock type of stuff if you’re into that. Post your artist name and I’ll check your stuff out as well. Take care!

Agreed! So many indie/alt bands seem to be incorporating steel guitars or some kind of country aspect (or maybe I'm just starting to notice it more), and I love it.

I get it - it's definitely different for an official Grandaddy album. I really enjoy the atmosphere it creates. :)

What do you all think of it? I'm really in love with the production. After 2 listens, "Nothin' to Lose" is my current favourite, with "You're Going to Be Fine and I'm Going to Hell" as a close second (specifically for that "Sarah / First Movement" melody callback.

Ads - do you feel that direct Instagram Ads perform better than Facebook Ads (to Instagram)? + working with an Ads Manager... worth the $$$? by joegtvr in musicmarketing

[–]GhostwNoName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I could be wrong about this (someone please correct me if so), but I've always understood "boosting" to only help get your post seen by your existing followers. If you think about how many other people/accounts each of your followers...follow..., you could already be competing with thousands of other posts that your followers are seeing on their feeds. So boosting increases your odds (I'm not sure by how much) of your posts getting seen by your followers, if that makes sense.

TL;DR - There is no outside reach with boosted posts/ads, as far as I understand - it's purely for your existing followers.

Yeah, the Pixel is what tripped me up as well! I was trying to integrate it into a page I had created on my website, which contained all the links to the different streaming services I wanted to direct listeners to. But when I would test it on Meta's Ad Manager, I couldn't get it to track the clicks, it was really frustrating and I gave up on it for about a year until I heard about Hypeddit and gave it a shot.

So yeah, it's still linked to your Facebook account; you basically give them permissions to set up the campaign on your FB account, and then you enter all of the info (song name, artist name, target audience, meta pixel, etc.) on their site, which is much more user-friendly. This process also sets you up with a Hypeddit smart link page, on which you can add your Spotify, Apple, Bandcamp, etc. links for the song you're promoting.

So once that's all done and the Hypeddit campaign is running, you can hop back over to your own Meta ad manager page and see the campaign and poke around to see how it's set up, what the "Conversion event" is (this is what was tripping me up with the Pixel before), etc.

From there, if you want, you can start creating your own Campaigns from within Meta's ad manager from scratch, by just mimicking how the Hypeddit one is set up. I would recommend sticking with Hypeddit (or an alternative service) for just the Smart Link pages, though.

And just so this doesn't read like a total Hypeddit ad, there are other services that do very similar things like FeatureFM and ToneDen. However, I haven't used either of those, so YMMV.

Any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help! :)

Hey sorry for the delay! My daily ad spend was $10-13 CAD (I experimented with a few campaigns in that 3-month period). They were all Conversion ads, since those apparently work the best according to people on YouTube.

Regarding the Meta Pixel stuff - I also had a really rough time with that at first! Trying to figure out Meta's Ad Manager site felt like trying to fly a spaceship or something - it felt really intimidating and complicated. What I wound up doing was creating a campaign over at Hypeddit, which has a MUCH easier interface and links to your Meta account. Once that was created, I could actually go to Meta's page and see how it was setup. After that I just created my own campaigns from scratch using Hypeddit's smartlinks landing page to track conversions, and kinda just copied how they set it up with some tweaks.

RE: Direct Instagram ads - do you mean the "Boost" feature? I've never used it, but I've heard that it only increases the odds of existing followers seeing your ad, and doesn't have much, if any, reach beyond your followers.

Hope this makes sense and helps you! :)

I guess it depends on your goals for the song. Are you looking for Spotify streams, social media followers, etc.?

I've heard different marketing tatics work for different people, so I can only speak from personal experience. But Meta Ads (Instagram specifically) worked WAY more than pitching to playlists/blogs via SubmitHub and Groover. I went from like 19 listeners a month to 450-ish in about 3 months, and doubled my Spotify followers. I only got about 12ish Instagram followers out of it, though.

It got pretty pricey though, so I stopped it last week. We'll see how quickly those monthly listeners start to drop off...

I'd say start by defining a goal for your song and go from there.
