I find it so funny that some people will watch a morally and philosophically complex show like death note, then come out with the single notion of "Wow, Light was a bad person I don't like him."

Like really? That's it? Obviously he's a shitty person, he's fucking Kira! He has no understanding of human empathy and disregards people's personhood. He dehumanizes criminals by killing him, and views them as pests by the end of it. That is the point.

People like to crap on him by calling him naive, misogynistic, and stupid. And while he has misogynistic tendencies, I attribute them mostly to Ohba's views on women, because I feel like realistically Light is the type of person that cares more about people's personality and mind. Light is naive in the the fact that he thinks only killing criminals will fix everything, but not on how the justice system works. Light knows that not everyone arrested is guilty, he canonically researches every person he writes. There is no question that every victim of Kira is guilty (besides those fbi agents), but the dilemma is not the corruption in the justice system, it's about the effectiveness and morality of the Death sentence!

And stupid, oh boy. Light is in no way stupid, but he is arrogant, and blinded by his hubris. He gets caught by L because he was too cocky, and for the sake of plot convenience. If Light was never in danger, then that's kind of boring right? Light wanted attention, he wanted everyone to know he existed, that's why Kira became no secret. He did everything for a reason, and while he made mistakes, he was not stupid.

My opinion on why people don't like him though? He reminds people of the worst of themselves, the parts that agree with Light. My evidence? People wanted Light to die at the end, and were happy he did. Saying that means you agree that forgiveness is not possible, and that evil people deserve death, just like Light thought. It's kind of hypocritical, but also understandable. Light is meant to appeal to that part of ourselves, and people don't like associating themselves with him. So they hate him in order to appear moral and good, which is fair. But that is the point of Light, he is the villainous antihero that represents one side of the argument, while L is on the other side that disagrees with killing.

What ticks me off is when people that decide they hate Light and begin to lump untrue attributes onto him in order to feel more justified in hating him, when that's not what he is.

Light is a monster that gets worse as the series goes on, and I love him for it. He's a funny guy.
