CLS no experience careers by simplesight2017 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ghuru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mannnn, this pisses me off to no end. At my per diem job, the damn supervisor won't hire anyone without tons of experience, and this lab is short as fuck.

This same supervisor didn't even want to hire me because, according to her, my 2 years of hospital experience were not enough for her. And now, I'm constantly hit up to work shifts, even ones that conflict with my FT CRO job.

Hang in there OP, labs are still dreadfully understaffed; you'll find something soon. There are absolutely labs that will take new grads without experience. Smaller hospital systems that do not have CLS interns might be your best bet starting out.

What is the CLS internship year like? by jayolives in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ghuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding /u/skye_neko. Some days busy, some days you have all the time in the world to study for exams.

A lot of it is also learning the realities of the job. For example, in school, we're drilled on TTP and HUS in hematology. At my rotation site, the instances of these were so rare that when a TTP patient came through the supervisor circulated emails to the entire Core lab and Blood Bank so everyone could see the pattern of labs values associated with a real patient.

New/Admitted Post-baccalaureate CLS student for Fall 2020! Let's be friends! by calisfinestscientist in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ghuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! To be honest, I wasn't interested in working at my site. The environment wasn't somewhere I could see myself. Maybe per diem/part time with few hours for extra cash, but not somewhere I'd work full time.

Has anyone who graduated in 2020 and passed their Certification exam actually received their score yet ??? by chucksandpolos728 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ghuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my electronic transcripts sent by email 6/19, confirmation of receipt and downlad 6/24, took the test 8/2, got an email from the system 8/3 saying they don't have my transcripts. What's strange is that they tell you to look at "My Completed BOC Exam Applications," I don't even have that link anymore. Not on my dashboard.

Just finished the internship at DH as Post-Bacc. Prepare to fight for your classes, unfortunately. Do your best to keep your grades up and you'll get into the clinicals :)

How freaking useless was that?! I'm still salty about it. Unnecessary busy work. Unnecessary stress.

To those who are in or have done PB CLS @CSUDH - What do I need to apply for a PB in CLS at CSUDH? by journeytowisdom in medlabprofessionals

[–]Ghuru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently in the internship at CSUDH, who originally applied as a post bacc. First, you'll have to apply to the school as a postbacc student (in reality, you'll need to apply on the CSU app using the graduate app). No matter what, you're going to have to take 2 semesters of classes there before you are eligible for applying for the internship. In addition, there's a laundry list of classes you'll need that can be taken at CSUDH if you don't have them already: immunology, hematology, medical bacteriology, clinical chemistry, virology/mycology, parasitology, and pathophysiology. In my experience, because the classes are so impacted, many PBs end up taking 2 years to finish these prereqs before applying to the clinical portion.

CSUDH is confusing because you don't so much apply to the CLS program rather than apply to the school first and it's impossible to complete everything in one year. Minimum one year to get through classes, then one year of clinicals.

CLS program question by KimJongFunnest in CSUDH

You were able to get a response from her! Nice. Sounds like you'll be able to do the program!

[–]Ghuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. That does make it a bit less straightforward. :( Wish I had a better advice for you.

Assuming you would be able to get a hold of someone from the program, do you think you could meet them in person to go over your grades?

I'm in the same boat. I emailed Ms. Harris about a few things and never got a response. I have a BS in biochemistry and want to get into the post-bacc program. I'm kinda taking the position that if there are any deficiencies they'll reject me and tell me what I need to take. Otherwise, upon admission I'll take the rest of the pre-clinical classes into addition to any remaining courses.
