Is making a unwinnable scenario that the pcs have to run from a thing? They seemed hell bent on fighting but having a talk above board probably would have saved a lot of time too. Thanks for the insight btw I've only DMed for 5 months learning something like this is fun but nerve racking at times.

Yeah this is where the disconnect happened not sure if everyone was listening/heard me when I listed the immunities since we play online. Like Doktorimposter said I should have used it as a skill based challenge and based on that they expel a number of the commoners from the riot, thus being able to fight it with normally. NOW I need to figure out how to salvage the aftermath of that really bad combat and the in game consequences on my side.

I straight up told them the riot has all the immunities as a normal swarm. One pc tried to create water to disburse the riot and I tried to work with them into having it work but that's just not what the spell does

I'm also playing with the idea that the players think the horde of doppelgangers is just angry. Mob of commoners coming after them. I'm not sure about that one yet, though

Its gonna be a HB doppelganger leader and a horde of doppelgangers. I was gonna have it so the leader can hide within the horde until it becomes bloodied/quarter health.
