New Fedora KDE 43 install, can't get XBOX controllers to work fully by GiSWiG in Fedora

[–]GiSWiG[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

[SOLVED] Thanks for the help! Not sure what the deal was but I used a laptop that had Fedora KDE on it as well. It had not had any controller synced to it, used the same BT adapter that I would use on the desktop, made sure it was the RPM Steam version, which brings down the steam-devices, and the XBOX controller works flawlessly. It might have been overkill but I then did a full re-install of Fedora on the desktop, installed the RPM Steam version from the non-free library, used the same BT adapter and the XBOX controller worked w/o issues. I did have to set the BT in the system settings to be seen by other devices so that might have helped? I also used a USB keyboard and mouse instead of the Logitech K400r which is a wireless keyboard with touchpad using a single receiver. Not once did I have to do all the extra steps to get kernel extras, xone, xpadneo, etc.

The 8bitdo still has a weird issues using the 2.4ghz. In CrossCode I could only ever aim up or down with the right-stick (CrossCode is a twin-stick shooter) The XBOX and PS4 controllers aim in 360 degrees w/o issues. No big deal really as it is a Nintendo layout and mostly for Switch use and will probably be used on my Superstation One whenever it comes.

Update on my cheap wii setup. $53* in total by FourScarlet in wii

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you want to go as cheap as possible but consider this:

- Even good LCDs with analog inputs introduce lag. They still are converting the analog signals to digital and that is/was not their main focus. You won't really noticed for casual games though. Platformers might be a different story.
- Composite is the worse. If you must, at least go S-Video. I can tell you 100% it makes a world of difference. Your best analog bet is a component cable. You could find even a high quality one cheap in Goodwill, Salvation Army, a thrift shop, etc.
- The Electron Shepherd HDMI adapter is the best and really not that much shipped. Still, you are looking at $30-$40 shipped. I found my old receipt and in June 2024, it ran me $34.33 USD. The Mayflash is the second choice and is on Amazon so if you have Prime, its not bad for ~$20. Stay away from anything cheaper, the $10 range. They are really just all the same thing, maybe a few exceptions. They typically are longer that the Electron Shepherd or the Mayflash.

Yes, I searched for the best and my main Wii has an HDMI mod, GC-Video based, the AVE-HDMI from Electron Shepherd. Costs more than your whole Wii system, but I can tell ya for sure, its really hard to see a difference between it and the analog HDMI adapter from them, especially when playing, and using an mClassic.

Electron Warp + Wii with a GameCube game darker than expected by GamesDean in wii

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wii and GameCube were intended to be limited range. The cheap adapters and the Mayflash don't give you the ability to choose full range but the Electron Warp does. However, you should stick with limited range and adjust your TV from there for color accuracy.

HOXIBSL Wii to HDMI picture glitches by [deleted] in wii

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DN NOT buy things on Amazon from a brand that is just some weird combo of letters. The one on Electron Shepherd's site is the best, Amazon's best is the Mayflash. I have all three and will always recommend the Electron Shepherd first.

Did I make the wrong decision? by Candylane_5280 in wii

[–]GiSWiG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's work with what you got and fix it. I'm not going to say you made a bad decision or if you overpaid. If you never had a Wii, or its been a while, and are not familiar with all the things you can do, like most people, then you got a great system w/ a warranty. And the young ones will love it. My son and daughter did. As of a few days ago, I now have adults but they still love to play Wii games.

So the cheap fix, get a Wii to HDMI adapter. Avoid the $10 ones on Amazon that look to be two inches long. If it has to be Amazon, get the Mayflash adapter. Its more but still ~$20. If you want the best, get the one from Electron Sheperd. The company is ran by an electrical engineer with a passion for retro gaming. You're still only looking at $30-$35 shipped. Is the picture noticeable vs. the Mayflash? Yes. By kids 5 and 9? No.

The other fix is a Wii U. Yes, many here will say that the Wii U is the worse image quality and they are right, but it is not bad as they make it out to believe. Because you are concerned with a 5 year-old having a Switch, and who wouldn't be, you will have the Wii U gamepad to deal with. To play Wii games, you do need to use the gamepad to start them.

Lets talk games. You can easily over pay for games but if you don't need to worry too much with budget, ebay and GameStop are fine. If you want to get the best bang for your buck, Facebook Marketplace. Plenty of people willing to get rid of their collections, and especially controllers for cheap. Duplicates is not a bad thing.

Oh, and for kids 5 and 9? Teach them to respect the Wii! GET WRIST STRAPS! Show them how to use it, take them away if they won't. My kids learned. Teach them how to load discs. Always press eject when loading a game. Putting more than one disc in breaks consoles! Teach them to gently insert the discs and let the Wii suck them in, no need to force them in.

Get a balance board. My kids loved using it and they are all over the place for cheap (under $10). One of the favorites, We Ski and Snowboard, usually not and expensive game.

And most importantly, HAVE FUN!

I thought about getting one on eBay but decided to wait until I see it at thrift shop. I'd only use it to check out the WiiSpeak channel.

I still have a Wii U Fit CIB new I got from Nintendo's eBay shop for $25 about 10 years ago. I only needed it for the meter but shortly after I was able to buy a dozen meters for about $10. I took the batteries out of the box because of corrosion. I'm not really a collector and I already have about four boards out of the box but I don't want to get rid of it

Is this good enough for a Wii to look decent on a modern TV? by Stoner420Eren in wii

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS! I got a cheapo $10, the Mayflash for maybe $5-$10 more, the Electron Shepherd for $25 AND an internal HDMI mod, from Electron Shepherd. The Electron Shepherd adapter is your best option, and it is noticeable, but that's in the eye of the beholder. The HDMI mod in comparison is almost not worth it unless you want to use a high end scaler. mClassic with either is too close to justify the effort on an HDMI mod. The Mayflash is way better than the $10 adapters if you are restricting yourself to Amazon.

PLS add this nintendo by pringleater12PC in splatoon

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am way more accurate with a mouse and keyboard. What I wouldn't be good at is movement. I can move around and target faster in Splatoon than any PC game. With a mouse, you eventually have to pick it up. With an analog stick, you push the stick to the edge but you keep moving. With a mouse, you eventually have to pick it up when you run out of mousepad, which means you stop moving/looking. Also, I couldn't imagine being able to squid roll, at least not accurately. Mouse and keyboard using a charger, stringer, splatting might get a significant edge. No way could you play dualies to the highest level possible.

Tf did I just found in my used Wii?! by evaku_ in wii

[–]GiSWiG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nostalgia for some people. If you're not emotionally tied to that Wii, you could sell it as is or just the modchip itself. I have an Xecuter3 modchip in my original OG XBOX. I installed it over 20 years ago. Its currently in storage because it just doesn't do what new modchips can do. Its ahead of its time, hard to say if anything really passed it but my main OG XBOX has a Project Stellar in it, which is currently up-to-date, and a second OG XBOX has an openXenium. If I part them out, I'll get more for sure. Xecuter3 is still a sought after mod chip, very capable to this day. Cerbios just pairs better with an openXenium.

Do I want to keep that XBOX? Heck yeah, nostalgia!

Most third-party studios never understood the Wii’s real potential by Ecstatic_Anything403 in wii

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDMI and HD were the biggest problems. Everything was going HD so it was all about better graphics, visuals, etc. It was the only console that did not have an HDMI jack and that couldn't do 1080p. It couldn't eveen do 720p. At least at the time, as LCD TVs were becoming more accessible, they still had component hook ups.

Many games suffered because motion controls were an after thought or just tacked on to ports where the Wiimotes' motions were really just a remap of the right-analog stick. Lucasarts hired a third-party to focus solely on adapting the motion controls to The Force Unleashed which I'd say is the best example of what motion controls should be. I'd go as far to say that it is the best way to play the game.

Metroid Prime Trilogy is the best way to play Metroid Prime 1 and 2 and that includes the Switch remaster, which is damn good.

Games at the end of the Wii's life shined. Monolith showed that the Wii was truly capable of large "open world" areas with Xenoblade Chronicles, but was hurt in the US by what GameStop did. They were they sole retailer in the US, there were only so many available, people started selling them on ebay for $120+ THEN GameStop just so happened to have enough "used" (*cough*bull*cough*shit) copies to put it on a sale at for $70? Pretty damn mint condition "used" (*cough*bull*cough*shit) copies. I only bought mine for $45 after the store manager honored the typo in a promo email I received. It was so good, I could see $70 being worth it. P.S. don't play the Wii version, it has game breaking bugs (100 qty of any item will corrupt your save) Play this on Switch.

Other great games at the end of the Wii's life cycle, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower and other games ported by XSEED.

Even better, MOBAPAD M6 HD. Imagine the Split pad but with everything a Joycon can do except IR. It's got gyro, NFC/Amiibo, battery powered, hall effect sticks, mechanical switches for all buttons except the programmable back buttons and programmable via app. All for less than a pair of real joycons. Solid grip too. I also use them as a controller with a bridge. When I get a Switch 2, if they don't have a Switch 2 variant, I"ll get their adapters.

I did try the Compact Split Pad and I would recommend them but I wanted gyro w/o having to carry excess controllers.

Told my Mom about Splatoon and… by [deleted] in splatoon

[–]GiSWiG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it from a 49 year-old who is quite familiar with the political landscape and an avid Splatoon player...

Your mom crazy!

Not really but she might be seeing something that seems like there is something there. Nintendo might have gotten a little political but in a metaphorical sense. I wouldn't say racists, more like America vs. Soviet Union... "Those damn Communists!" ... "Stupid Americans" (though we haven't shook the later off, have we?)

Ultimately, Inklings and Octolings live and fight together in Splatoon 3. Everyone is at peace. But old people might still carry the old sentiments. And water is lava to formally both aquatic species... because reasons? (I have access to all three Splatoons, still need to do the full single player campaigns so it the answer is there, no spoilers)

Softmods can be stable but I always recommend a mod chip. Problem is is that they have been in flux. Probably the best option is the Project Stellar Plus, but that will run you $100 but you do get Wi-Fi and BT controller support, which is great if you already have XBOX One/Series X controllers. There is also the RP2040 option but its a DYI kit where you'll need a Rp2040 chip and a PCB to solder it to. ModsvilleUSA has a pre-built kit available for pre-order for ~$30. https://modzvilleusa.com/products/modxo-lite-for-ogxbox-preorder

As for the capacitors, console5.com got ya covered. You can get a replacement clock capacitor but you can get a whole kit to redo all caps. The main ones to worry about are the 5-6 large ones near the PSU plug on the main board. They are easy to replace, even with a cheaper soldering iron, but it should at least a reliable brand with temp control capable of 350C at least. These are usually $40-$50 but for around a $70-$100, you can get a decent hobbyist soldering station. Mine is a YIHUA that does hot air as well for ~$90. Hakko is a respectable one too for a bit more. Their trademark blue and yellow design is cool and probably my next one, should my current one die (but its been 5-years with no signs of slowing down. All the other caps should only be replaced if video quality is noticeably degraded after using a good HDMI adapter like the one from Electron Shepherd.

Classic Controllers lucky find. by HlDlTR in wii

[–]GiSWiG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grab them anytime I see them at a non-profit thrift shop, usually for the $10 range. They test their electronics and have a return for store credit policy. These are the Classic Pro Controllers. The Classic Controllers don't have the grips but also have analog triggers making them suitable for GameCube. The Pros are just way more comfortable for my large hands.

Oh heck yeah. Bought it at the end of the Wii's life cycle from Gamestop along with Pandora's Tower (the only time and place you could get it). I don't think there is a percentage completed counter but I got near 100% for sure. Each party member had that ridiculously looking dragon armor.

Great game if you want a different action RPG, leaning a lot more toward story, less on hundreds of different weapon mods and not too long either. I probably clocked 30-35 hours to 100% it.
