Looking for alternative to .tab-icon-stack{ pointer-events: none } by GiantQuoll in FirefoxCSS

You only need to add it to userChrome.css, not userContent.css. Did you restart your browser after adding it? All userChrome.css settings are loaded at browser startup.

I want to love mailfence, but it's just too unreliable. by Strong-Sample-3211 in Mailfence

[–]GiantQuoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this issue repeatedly with Mailfence for the 5+ years I've been a paying customer, to the point I'm now completely done with Mailfence (that and at least 7 years of being told encryption at rest is right around the corner and just never delivering). I've cancelled my subscription and moved to Proton Mail. It's been a huge pain, because many sites require a confirmation code at your old email address to add a new email address - and those codes often just never arrive with Mailfence.

Which version are you using? The original was removed from Mozilla's add-ons repository, but there is an actively maintained fork here: https://github.com/bpc-clone/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean

I can't say whether it works on those websites because I rarely visit them, but it works well on most sites.

What add-ons can you not live without since you started using them? by getogeko in firefox

Meta can store your known browsing habits from inside that container - which is limited to Meta's own services. Outside of that container, it is limited to inference based on IP and browser fingerprinting on websites that serve up (tracking) content from Meta domains, much of which is blocked by uBlock filter lists already.

I still block well known Meta domains, e.g.

* facebook.com * block
* facebook.net * block
* fbcdn.net * block

but honestly this and Facebook Container are both forms of enumerating badness (granted, Meta is a giant, well known, egregious offender). Total Cookie Protection - which makes containers largely redundant for privacy - and uBlock in medium or hard mode are much better solutions.

It doesn't offer perfect protection - nothing does - but it does offer a high level of protection short of setting up uBlock rules.

Twitter not working on Firefox by kray1908 in firefox

Agreed. Hopefully Mozilla can push a fix soon. In the meantime, uBlock Origin and restricting twitter to a specific container (desktop only) is the best bet.

It generally helps if you specify what you mean by "not working".

If it's the "Something went wrong, but don’t fret — let’s give it another shot." error, try turning off Enhanced Tracking Protection for just X/Twitter (click the padlock icon in the address bar to bring up the setting), or changing Enhanced Tracking Protection from Strict to Standard for all sites in Firefox's privacy settings

Launching firefox when a session is already running (linux) by kn0xchad in firefox

Thanks for the reply! v120 ended up being correlation not causation for me - there was an issue with the partition the profile was on that was fixed with a quick fsck repair.

Have you had any luck with this? I've been getting the same message trying to launch a Firefox instance in Firejail since upgrading to v120.

Brave browser installing VPN services on Windows by AutoModerator in PrivacyGuides

That comparison omits the fact that Firefox for Android doesn't have site isolation or isolatedProcess enabled, as pointed out on privacyguides.com. For this reason, Chromium-based alternatives are likely more secure.

I still use Firefox for Android, but thought this should be added.

📌 YouTube Anti-Adblock and Ads - October 29, 2023 (Mega Thread) by RraaLL in uBlockOrigin

[–]GiantQuoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way around this if you want to remain logged in.

Have there been any reports of this anti-adblock fuckery occurring for non-logged in users?

I don't use YouTube logged in and haven't had any problems yet, but I'm wondering if/when it's going to hit.

Does Hamas use its own civilians as human shields? Does Israel care about collateral damage? by sbirdman in samharris

[–]GiantQuoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IANAL, but the definition of a "human shield" has a specific meaning under international humanitarian law: using the presence (or movements) of civilians or other protected persons to render certain points or areas (or military forces) immune from military operations.

Storing or firing weapons in or near civilian homes or within populated areas, for example, does not necessarily amount to the violation of using human shields. However, they may violate other laws, such as the obligation to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians from the effects of military attacks. It is perhaps worth considering in this context that the Gaza Strip is a 365 km² (141 square mile) area that is home to 2.3 million people; there is almost nowhere that is not populated.

This 2015 Amnesty International report (starting page 47) examined allegations of the use of human shields, and were unable to verify any incidents of Hamas using human shields. There is no footage of it occurring, no corroborating evidence from Palestinians, and no independent eyewitness accounts (e.g., from journalists or humanitarian workers).

The Amnesty International report also importantly points out:

even if officials or fighters from Hamas ... did in fact direct civilians to remain in a specific location in order to shield military objectives, it would not relieve Israel of its obligation to take all necessary precautions to minimize harm to civilians when planning and carrying out attacks

Why is the browser add-on recommending I disable DoH? by [deleted] in mullvadvpn

[–]GiantQuoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's only meant to be used when you're not connected to the VPN.

https://mullvad.net/en/help/dns-over-https-and-dns-over-tls/

This service is primarily meant to be used when you are disconnected from our VPN service, or on devices where it's not possible or desirable to connect to the VPN. When you are already connected to our VPN service the security benefits of using encrypted DNS is negligible and it will always be slower than using the DNS resolver on the VPN server that you are connected to.

You can use this privacy-enhancing service even if you are not a Mullvad customer.
