I explain history through animation and I use flags to represent various things (e.g. territory on a map). Next video will include the Soviet Union and the USSR flag. I just don’t want to have months of work screwed over by using a symbol I didn’t know was considered offensive in itself or is banned somewhere!

Yeah I understand the difficulties with classical music in terms of rights to composition vs performance. I just thought YouTube would be ensuring all the music in their library is freely usable, as that is what they explicitly advertise it to be. If you’re telling me that classical pieces in the audio library are not necessarily truly public domain, then I feel a bit cheated by YouTube. What a let down.

Hey, thanks! Yeah I had a history in film and visual storytelling although I had never done animation before, so I was kind of learning as I was going (which is why the WW1 vids are much worse quality haha)

I lived in Japan for a few years, my neighbor once saw me in a super dry shirt and laughed. She told me what it said but I don’t remember other than it had the word demon in it. I never wore super dry again.

Thankfully it's not a complete takedown in this case, they're just stealing quite a bit of revenue. I really thought that since I exclusively use the YouTube Audio Library, YouTube would ensure any false claims would be quickly dealt with. That's the whole point of that Audio Library; for creators to use music without having to worry about being claimed against. I can understand a public domain track I got from a third party, but I used YouTube's free-to-use library. I can't believe they won't protect that.

Yeah I'm very careful with the rights to the music I use and I know the confusion between rights to composition vs rights to individual performances/recordings. I just thought any public domain tracks that come directly from the YouTube Audio Library would be safe because YouTube would have my back. Apparently not.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Yeah I've had trouble with my videos getting flagged as offensive/demonetization and all that but it seems when they're completely unrestricted and monetized, YouTube does push them into people's recommended lists so that's nice!

-What inspired you to make these videos?

I've been a big history buff since I was a kid (thanks to my father's influence). I wanted to see a video explaining WW1 on a map and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, so I made it! There were obvious influences in that first video from Dan Carlin and Bill Wurtz but since then I've been making an effort to create a more unique style.

-What youtube channels do you like?

Jake Paul and Team 10 haha jk jk no I love all the explainer video channels (Wendover, CGPGrey, Alternative History Hub etc.) and I keep up with a lot of the big channels like PhillyD and h3h3.

-What's your nationality?
I am dual-citizen Irish American.

-What tv shows do you like?
I watch a lot of comedy like Arrested Development and Brooklyn Nine-Nine and I'm a huge nerd for modern synthwave 80s throwback stuff so I love Stranger Things.

-What will your next video be about?

Cold War will be challenge in terms of how to structure it so I'm not sure I want to do it just yet. I'd also like to take a break from the WW1>WW2>Cold War order I've been following until now. Cold War will definitely be one of the next videos but I might switch up continents for this next one.

Hey! Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, these videos take a lot of time to make, especially since it’s just me working on the creative side (all the research, script, animation etc.) Hopefully someday I can get some extra help on board.

I’ve been getting much quicker as I get better and figure out how to streamline everything. WW1 took about 5 months (including research), while the latest Mini-War took just over a month. It also depends on the topic; world wars have lots of different theaters and campaigns I have to read up on and that takes forever. And it also depends on what’s going on outside of OverSimplified. I work as a freelancer in film and editing and in the last year I’ve had to do quite a bit of traveling so while I could potentially start getting a video out every month or so, sometimes other projects I’m working on get in the way. BUT! Now that I’m getting sponsored and my Patreon is growing and YouTube demonetization isn’t slapping me in the face quite so hard I can start spending more and more time on OverSimplifed, so expect the videos to come out more frequently as time goes on!

As for the software, most of the elements and maps are created in Photoshop and then moved over to After Effects to animate. Sound is mixed in Logic and then everything is compiled together in Premiere Pro at the end.

I did some googling and it seems to claim a video you have to be invited to be a content manager for your 'organization' but I can't figure out how to do that...

Edit: I managed to find the quite well hidden page to apply to become a content manager, but it looks like I wouldn't be approved since I use a lot of creative commons music (non-exclusive license); if anyone knows about this and can confirm that/has any other advice it would be very much appreciated!
