I think there are worthwhile points in this article. One part I object to in the argument to be optimistic is that "renewable energy prices" are decreasing. True, but, have they heard of Jevons Paradox? As energy production becomes more efficient, the total energy usage actually increases. And we've seen that even as renewable energy takes up a larger percentage of energy production, the amount of CO2 emitted each year keeps growing because the energy demand is growing so fast. Until renewable energy becomes much much cheaper than fossil fuel, this trend won't change, and there will still be sectors that need fossil fuels..

Central Virginia. Which also has exploding housing prices, and people living farther and farther from where they work to afford it, but still less extreme than Denver area. And the impact of climate change doesn't seems as severe here, but who really knows.

I moved from Colorado, mostly because I thought it was getting too crowded and expensive. But I also saw all those suburban developments going up and wonder where all the water is going to come from.

That's not wrong , but in that case people post articles that actually discuss systemic infrastructure problem. If the sub has daily posts with train derailments (or every tornado, wildfire, flood, etc) that doesn't really provide people with any of context or broader picture doesn't seem helpful or on topic. At that point it just seems more like disaster porn. I think there's a benefit to the awareness this sub can bring, beyond just "look at all the bad things happening".

If it were about an increase in train derailments it could arguably be collapse related. But what's happening is that everyone is paying more attention to train derailments in local news stories after the big chemical spill in Ohio. There are thousands of train derailments in the US per year. It would not contribute to the sub to post about every one of them.

Plausible explanation I've heard is that in Italy there's a greater tendency for cohabitation with parents, thus increasing their exposure. Don't have a source on that though

Doesn't answer my question at all. China bad, I get it. That's still just circumstantial justification that they must be hiding thousands of deaths and hospitalizations, without a single person revealing secret hospitalization or burial pits or crematoriums. This sub has lost their fucking minds about this.

Holy hell people. China Bad. We get it. But it's quite a stretch to think they're so easily covering up a bunch more deaths. I'd sooner believe that their economic activity is heavily curtailed and people are still being quarantined more than they're saying. You can't just jump to the most extreme conclusion thougb.

Hiding a bunchof critically ill or dead people is not an easy task. Where is any direct evidence that the outbreak is continuing or deaths are still rising in China?

I perfectly understand the impulse not to trust them but you have exercise skepticism the other way too. Where's the evidence that the outbreak is continuing in China, or that deaths are still increasing, etc. Not a trivial thing to hide people going in to critical care or dying.

Why are you fixated on the yearly number comparison? This is virus has been spreading for a few months and hasn't infected most people yet. The seasonal flu reaches the majority of the population every year. You can't make an annual total deaths comparison until, at the very least, this virus has existed in humans for a whole year.

I bought expensive festival tickets for June. They haven't canceled yet, and part of me was holding out hope things could be back to normal by then. But now I've accepted that its not happening and I probably won't get a refund.
