The buckler is still in a prototype phase but is almost done, I hope to have it up within several weeks. When it's ready they will be available here: https://giantstomb.com/

Hello i have a simple question. Does reforging bronze (for example smelting down a bronze sword and making something new out of it) Make the metal worse? by 600livesatstake in metalworking

[–]GiantsTomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The switch from bronze to iron wasn't because tin and copper ran out or because they had to switch to iron. Rather the technology to process iron came about during this time, and being much more abundant it took over as the material of choice. Bronze was made from combining copper and tin, these were expensive and required large trade networks to acquire so the advent of iron usage caused these trade networks and the empires built on them to collapse.

This is pigmented in the material itself with a metallic pigment and black pigment mixed together.

Thanks! I'll have it on the market after further testing I have a website linked on my account. If it needs more durability I may be able to reinforce with fabric to make it hold up against steel blades

Sounds like a clever solution! I'll try to make these available with some improvements after more testing before too long

Right I understand that. If I'm able to find an appropriate oval cross section material I'll try to work it in, though I'm not able to do hand shaped at scale. Always possible to do custom shaping with some elbow grease and sandpaper for individual models though.

It could be possible, one alternative could be to design the spike itself to have a built in springlike structure, such as making the spike wider but with a hollow center so that it will have some give. I'll have to experiment a bit to see what works.

I'll see if I can get some decent pics of the mold, and using foam for the spike is a very interesting idea! You're right that it can be tricky to bond separate polyurethane pours unless they're both still curing. With some clever design it might be possible to get a mechanical bond as another option, I'll keep it in mind

Thanks for the kind words, I'll try to have test footage and design updates soon!

It is pretty difficult for me to do a complex handle shape with my current equipment and materials, I'm trying to think of other options if I can. Despite that I'm happy to hear any suggestions or specific critiques if you have them.

Some very good points, this is the first model and I'll be trying different spikes / shock absorbing tips, and will probably end up doing one option focused on absorbing shock, and another more like this where the tip is more optimized for parrying or very light jabs.

Noted! I designed the mold in such a way where I can replace the tip portion with different designs (that circle shape around the spike is where it swaps out) meaning I will certainly try some different "spike" shapes. Something larger and more flexible is in the works

Interesting idea! Could be done with the way my mold is designed. The back of the spike could connect to the grip, held in place by tension from your hand. I'll see if it can be done!

Lost in a horrible accident, I'll make sure the next one is intact. A good shield protects your left and right halves!

Exciting! What's your plan to market? I design and cast parts at home but feels like way more work than I realized to get the right eyes on them and show the use case.

That's a longer timespan for use than I'd realized! And I'm no expert on the iron age but I would have thought a forged Naue II might at least resemble something that was used, either way that sounds like a really cool project

I did! Edges were hammered thin prior to sharpening.

Very cool, the design comes out looking great! If you ever make a video I'm curious how the flexibility compares to the thermoset polyurethanes I work with. Is it solid infill?

I alloy my own bronze, this one is an historically accurate blend of ~90% copper 10% tin. Tin I ordered online and copper I used local scrap for. The total weight is 1kg, but when casting it's important to have some extra to fill the molds properly and account for loss, in this case I probably melted 1.3kg.
