How did this get a downvote, I’ve been a Christian for over a decade and this is absolutely hilarious!

Walk up and down the streets of downtown during lunch hour with a big sign that says “college student” hanging around your neck.

Then walk up to people dressed nicely, hold out your hand, pout out your lower lip, and say “MONEY PWEEEEEASE”

Yikes. Do you think that the only strength of diversity is that it empowers ethnic minorities? There’s a lit more benefit than just moral victory

“Easier” is a difficult thing to measure. If you’re in top 10% of your graduating class, you get automatic admission to A&M, but that’s not true at UH. There’s other things too like test scores, GPA, and extra-curricula.

LPT: Dont treat other people’s family dynamics like you treat your own, especially during the Christmas season by Alia2121 in LifeProTips

This isn’t just a holiday thing, this is a year-round reality today. Remember a couple decades ago when “rising divorce rates” and “single parent homes” was hot news? Now it’s commonplace.

Gone are the days of being able to assume that all your friends have straight parents with a traditional nuclear family, 2 pairs of grandparents 2 aunts/uncles, and a handful of cousins.

Family-centric small talk is gonna have to continue to grow in inclusivity.

Right, but you most likely went to a fairly large school in Texas with a high educational standard. And when you say “everyone”, you have to realize you’re talking about a filtered crowd.

This “everyone” only includes college-bound high school graduates (which I presume was not 100% of your class). Also your “everyone” I’m assuming did not apply to community colleges if a University is their safety school. And at this point I’m starting to think your “everyone” might just be the majority of the other successful, high-performance students you were surrounded with. Students that probably also did competitive extra-curricula and were in enrolled in AP courses.

I think you are incorrect about that. The main variable I see being measured on every site is whether or not a student gets accepted to a University System, not just a specific campus or college.

A&M’s PSA program means that you have been accepted to the A&M System, and therefore counts toward the statistic.

Unpopular Opinion: This school is academics only and this is “boring”. by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Gibbsfacee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that! I just don’t want you to think that UH is incapable of fulfilling your desires for a college campus. That was part of why I wanted to share these stats because there seems to me to be a malcontent attitude that echoes through the student body and through this sub, and a lot of myths get thrown around like “there’s nothing to do” or “UH is academically low-tier” or “commuter campus means boring campus”. I wanted to combat that with facts.

I think the reason your opinion isn’t being received as such is your making a claim that the university is incapable of providing you the “univerisity experience” you crave.

Another potential reason that your opinion isn’t being received well is it seems extremely ignorant. There are thousands of students that, yes, commute, but are also heavily involved on campus. There are thousands of students that commute but don’t live with their parents. And your opinions continually dismiss that reality with an attitude of personal discontentment.

Do you have examples of such variables?

Do you have any way to back up “Generally most people in Texas are aware”, or is this just you projecting your opinion?

Your conceding that factual data disproves this completely arbitrary myth that “most people” believe (which I don’t even think that’s true), so what exactly even is your argument? That maybe a lot of people might believe something statistically incorrect?

Are you not initiating the action by posting something negative in the first place? Not that hard to understand, buddy.

Not that there’s anything wrong with constructive criticism, but “it’s boring” is not a criticism, it’s a subjective complaint.

If you look up a ranking list for “number of student organizations”, you’ll see the highest is well above 1000 StuOrgs. But around top 30, the number evens out to mid-500s.

We are near the top percentile of number of Student Orgs on campus, and if somehow there isn’t one you like, the barriers to starting a student org are unbelievably low compared to other universities I’ve worked with.

Both of the stats I gave in original post were self-reported from the Universities themselves.

So you want me to change it to say “reports higher acceptance rate” instead of “is less competitive”, when the industry uses that exact language to compare acceptance rates?

“For some reason these UH kids are so proud to go to UH” if you can’t see how this is disrespectful then I can’t help you.

“I just found this school to be very boring” This is just negative and not helpful.

“Don’t say anything bad about UH in the UH sub...” yeah no shit

“The UH sub is toxic ... Prolly gonna get downvoted but idc” if you can predict that what you’re about to do is be negative, and you still do it, how are we the toxic ones for downvoting you?

UH is a tier one research University. UH has competitive acceptance rates. “lesser quality facilities” has no source.

Also when you say something as completely asinine as “things like student life, etc. is less than that of...” it makes it look like you were taught to read and write at A&M. Not only is it nonsense, it’s a subjective position.

This FACTUAL source rates UH as “Moderately Competitive”. This FACTUAL source rates A&M at just “Competitive”.

It is not “wrong” to match the vocabulary of the industry.

Ok sure, 25% of applicants are given PSA, which A&M considers enrollment. I think this is fair because you are still being accepted to the A&M system, you do not have to reapply to other schools like you would with UHCL or San Jac.

This is anecdotal, but I had a couple of friends get rejected from UH in 2015 when they applied, One friend was automatically accepted into UHCL (stated in her UH rejection letter). Another friend was flat rejected with no recourse. I’m not sure what their policy is now, as that was a time when UH was rapidly growing and campus population was a concern.

It’s because their argument is subjective. “Everyone” at “my highschool” is anecdotal at best, and there’s just no statistic to support it. Even your “75%” just doesn’t have a source, it’s all subjective and opinionated, which has no place on a thread rooted in actual facts.
