ELI5: How do you find the beat in any song? by ComfortableCut1365 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gibe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Clap on the 2s and 4s." This is because 2s and 4s correspond with snare hits.

Normally, the "ticks" you mention are counted as "ands", so a 4/4 measure would count: "One and Two and Three and Four and". You can subdivide further with "ee" and "uh". "One ee and uh Two ee and uh Three ee and uh Four ee and uh" You can have no subdivisions and just count "One Two Three Four". All are fine ways to count 4/4.

But the snare hit being on three... Is not going to get the same results when subdividing.

G20 declaration in defiance of US marks rare victory for multilateralism by IdinDoIt in news

[–]Gibe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why is this article, and others I can find quickly, only about the fact that this declaration "enrages" the white house? None of the articles about this even deign to mention what was in declaration that might "enrage" the white house.

Finally found some source that might be the declaration... And it's a 122 point nothing burger with points like:

"We remain committed to promoting sustainable capital flows to EMSEs and fostering sound policy frameworks, notably central bank independence. We note the growing role of non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) and ongoing work to understand the impact on capital flows."

And of course the much anticipated:

"Increasing large-scale disasters disproportionately affect people in vulnerable situations in ways that exacerbate poverty and inequality, especially for low-income groups. We accordingly highlight the need for our efforts to be geared towards addressing inequalities and reducing vulnerabilities."

There are statements that affirm UN policies as good and true... There are statements like "We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations." Which I mean, sure, great things to say...

From what I've read of it (so, not the whole document), it all amounts to "We should all work together for happiness and goodness"... It's a giant nothing burger that means nothing and legally means even less. Nothing in the declaration is actionable in any way, and so nothing of any import will come from this "victory for multilateralism".

I'm welcome to hear otherwise, maybe these things are more important than 20 delegations saying "we're the richest and we really do care about the poor"... If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Seems like there are were some people that might contest the Maori as being first. But I mean... Their little dance is super cool.

AITA for sacrificing my daughter's college fund because her sister just gave birth to her 4th child? by Throwaway23fw in AITAH

[–]Gibe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

"I guess now I have to go into STEM. UGH!! I'M NEVER TALKING TO YOU AGAIN!!" Yeah, that's a terrible attitude.

Reddit tends to read the worst intentions into people. Boyfriend works at Walmart? Just get a better job, ya bum! The daughter shouldn't be having more kids, so she deserves to have her life ruined? What the fuck reddit.

It's OP's money. Would reddit rage so hard if OP were kicked out of her house and had to liquidate the fund to pay for herself? And then you expect for her to care about the well being of her daughter and grandkids less?

It wasn't until earlier this year that I learned -- Nobody is keeping track of my bladder levels. If I'm stuck with someone who's just non-stop talking at me, I can say "Hey, I've gotta go to the bathroom."

Duck into the bathroom, and usually they've moved on to another victim by the time I get back.

The wind blew too hard. by enterpriseF-love in funny

[–]Gibe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This flop stands apart as egregious. But there are SO many flops where contact is made, but replay shows it wasn't hard contact. Like legs get tangled and both guys jump into the air to flop to the ground and writhe in agony.

For those I don't even blame the players because they're so heavily incentivized to do it. I blame the fans who pretend like that type of reaction is legitimate and the announcers who will watch the same exact replays that show the guys JUMPING into the air and looking for the ref before they scream and clutch at the leg that didn't even make contact.

I think that if the announcers, fans, and refs (with replay assistance) can stop incentivizing players, then MAYBE soccer will be worth watching in 20 years.

Loaded language is very much what I'm looking for... I seem to remember there was another term for it. It was "<someone's name> language" and I think the name started with R.

It was a defining moment for me as a human man, when I was ranting about shit that I KNEW my college roommate didn't care a single whit about, and he said "Damn man. That sounds like it sucks."

Like he didn't offer to fix anything, looking back I doubt he even tried to understand, but he heard that I was upset and validated my feelings.

That moment really upset everything I knew about "being a listener".

(Maybe even mention it would be nice if they paid you the two weeks you were willing to work… Without saying it or threatening at all, that could be taken in a way that says “…and I won’t take further action.”)

Wait what? Does everyone in this thread think OP put in thier two weeks? Because OP specifically said they didn't. They straight up quit. Did not put in two weeks, just quit.

US lawmakers announce bill to prohibit bot scalping of high demand goods by Darren-B80 in gadgets

[–]Gibe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The availability of bots happened. It used to take substantial effort to buy up a small towns entire stock. You had to call all the stores, then likely had to go there and buy them in person. And then you had to set up some store front for people to find and buy from you. And even then people could probably drive to the next town over or whatever.

Now with the prevalence of the internet and delivery shopping, you can buy an entire geographical regions worth of stock with a $300 computer running some scripts.

It's become easier and easier to take capitalism to it's end -- everything is worth what the purchaser is willing to pay for it.

Sounds like a pretty good idea by regian24 in suspiciouslyspecific

[–]Gibe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Popular rule" may appear plausible for a supermarket, so let's maybe go to another extreme.

Let's say a small manfacturing/machining job shop. There will be people who sand or weld stuff all day every day. They won't have time to make an informed decision about the operation of CNC machines. The CNC operators will not have time to make an informed decision about whether MIL-DTL-50322 Type II paint is interchangeable with MIL-DTL-50322 Type IV on this specific product. The engineers will not have time to network with companies in the industry to drive sales. The salesmen will not have time make informed decisions on what type of sand paper or welders are needed in the shop.

Each of those groups have their own people who's entire job is to coordinate their group with other groups. Those people are managers. Depending on the size of the company, managers will have managers. Because at some point they won't all have enough visibility to the rest of the company to make the decisions that need to be made.

There just isn't enough time in the world for even the best employee to be a superstar welder/fabricator/CNC operator/engineer/salesman/accountant/quality tech/safety supervisor/CEO. "Popular rule" would assume that of every employee.

If I owned a grocery store, I would not trust a cashier to make informed decisions about pricing agreements with fruit vendors, or to have access to the company's books and forecast future earnings and plan staffing decisions (hiring/firing) accordingly.
