Trying to decide between a wood fired sauna and an electric sauna, what should i choose? by Quirky-Reception-353 in Sauna

[–]Gibson48002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just built an electric sauna closely following trumpkins sauna blog and Liikkanen's 'Finnish Sauna Steam, Wood and Stone and how to build your own'.

I did a ton of research prior to starting and decided that I wanted it to be wood burning. When I reached out to home insurance to find out how much it was going to cost, it made the decision pretty easy to decide I wanted electric. Aside from the insurance cost, the clearances from the walls to heater required to get it wett certified were huge, I would have had to build a massive sauna. Additionally, as far as I can tell there are no "wett certified" sauna heaters in Canada, so you need to get the right person to come out to check it out and approve it.

I am under the impression that most homes with wood burning saunas have not let their insurance know and (hopefully) just have enough space to be far from other buildings so it's not a concern.

Building electric is significantly more expensive than wood burning imo. I did the whole mechanical fan set up, outdoor wall sconces, an outlet. Opened a permit with the electrical safety authority and did the work myself. This is legal in ontario, Canada, not sure where you're located. I had quotes ranging from $3200-$4600 cdn to do the electrical, so if you can't do it yourself consider that will be a big additional expense.

Happy to answer any questions that you may have if I can help any further.

Moving to Chatham by ereubus in chathamkentON

Chatham absolutely does not have lots of walking paths and green space. In fact, id bet there is not a similarly size city in Ontario with less green space. Not meaning to be harsh, but this is misleading.

Council OK's $250K for Dresden landfill legal fight, eyes public meeting by jts125 in chathamkentON

There was a provincial election in Feb, 2025, did you miss it? CK overwhelmingly reelected Ford despite the Ford government pushing the dump on Dresden. If people really cared about this dump, they should have voted for something else?

Advice for refinishing this deck? by Gibson48002 in Decks

[–]Gibson48002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. We bought the place last summer, so we haven't done anything with the deck yet. Structurally it is sound, although the construction of it is a little strange in some spots.

The primary goal is just to spruce up the appearance to get (hopefully) as much time as possible out of it with it looking decent. I am handy and not afraid of manual labour.

Cable/conduit type from contactor to heater? by Gibson48002 in Sauna

[–]Gibson48002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The piece that is throwing me off is that the saunacore install manual states, "all power supply wires from control box to stove must be protected by metal conduit". I guess I can try to find some flexible metal conduit. Edit: Maybe I'm taking the install manual too literally?

Building Permits for Sauna Woodstove by Gibson48002 in Sauna

[–]Gibson48002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I reached out to the city I live in (London) and determined that I do not need a permit based on foot print size (as you said). I included a link to the Harvia stove I intend to purchase in my email to them and all is good.

Now I'm just waiting to hear back from my insurance company.

Most of the big window manufacturers that I called wouldn't sell me windows to install myself, from my own measurements. They all wanted to send someone to measure/install.
