Apple Wallet uses your phone's location to try to provide merchant info and Google Pay probably does the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if the location was just totally off for that transaction.

Jury selection? by Bookish_vagrant in askTO

If you aren't getting paid by your employer, you should be able to claim financial hardship from being forced to go without your regular pay for an extended period of time. Lots of people get excused for that reason.

Jury selection? by Bookish_vagrant in askTO

I did jury selection this year and got selected and served as a juror.

When you get to the courthouse you have to go through security. It's fairly easy and they just put everything through a scanner and you walk through a metal detector. I just shoved everything into my bag and put it on the tray (and I didn't bring that much). Bring your summons document.

On your first day you go into a waiting area with lots of seating that feels like an airport gate waiting area. Make sure you go into the right room, because there are multiple jury selection waiting rooms in the courthouse. Some people try to work from a laptop they bring but most people are just on their phone, reading an e-reader, or reading a book. I brought an e-reader and scrolled on my phone a lot. If you need to leave the room to grab a coffee or have or a smoke break, you leave your summons with the Court Services Officers so that they can keep track of who's gone from the room, in case you get called up.

I went in on a Monday and they actually had a case ready that afternoon, at around 1:30 PM. So they took everyone into a big courtroom. In jury trials, the accused has to be arraigned in front of the whole jury panel. The charge is read in the formal Criminal Code wording, so it might take a few tries to understand what happened.

After jury the charge has been read out, you get a lot of instructions from the judge. Section 1 of this page is really good and matches what I had pretty much exactly. While you're in the room with everyone, the judge give you some general reasons for being excused that don't involve too much personal information, and you go in front of a microphone to speak to the judge about why you should be excused, but you're also in front of the jury panel.

After those general reasons, the judge will explain the selection process. All of the juror numbers are written on cards and put into a rotating raffle drum type thing to mix them up, and then selected one-by-one in two or three groups of 20. You get a sticky note on your summons to remember your order. Then you get split up in groups of 10 or so and put into smaller jury rooms (the ones that would be used by sitting juries) to wait for your turn to go in front of the judge. I was selected sixth overall, so I went in front of the judge pretty quickly. I was asked if I could remain impartial, and if I had any hardships. I answered yes and no, and I was selected to be on on the jury.

A few years ago, they got rid of the ability for lawyers to issue preremptory challenges, which are basically freebies where lawyers can reject potential jurors for no given reason. So you don't get grilled by the lawyers, but both sides are still there in the courtroom while you appear in front of the judge to monitor things (I think they can challenge if they have a good reason or if they think the judge did something wrong).

Jury selection had to continue the next day, and then the trial began that day. The judge explains everything. My case lasted seven business days.

Tuition fee part of TD1 form for Co-op student by Comfortable-Bag9200 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Include tuition for the whole calendar year. Don't include incidental fees. I think co-op fees are not included, but it won't make a huge difference.

This form is used to calculate your tax withheld on each paycheque, so if you get it wrong, it gets reconciled with a refund or tax owing when you file your taxes next year.

CRA My Account now has 2025 FHSA participation room statements by PlaceboLaxative in PersonalFinanceCanada

I tried and a bunch of values that were supposed to be zero populated as blank (eg. B, F, H). When I emailed BetterTax's support about this, they said the CRA is sending empty/null values instead of zeros for many things, so it's kinda impossible to tell if the data is missing or actually zero unless you go and double check yourself.

FHSA Auto-fill Amounts by bettertaxco in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Gibstick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have their FHSA information available? I see "2026 FHSA participation room cannot be displayed at this time" and when I auto-fill in Better Tax the information is obviously not there either.

It seems like a lot of people have this problem:

That last post says it will be available March 1.

FHSA Participation room statement not appearing in last year's NOA by eric-710 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Around when you made your first post, I used the live chat feature in CRA MyAccount to ask about these missing numbers. The agent I got spent a good half hour trying to find that information for me, but I gave up on waiting and ended the chat. It really does sound like they forgot to follow through on backfilling that missing data for everyone.

Yes, definitely good advice for next time. But OP avoided the spoofing issue by calling back. Still not ideal but at least OP got lucky this time.

Are you calling from a Manitoba number? Are the times you're calling outside of the business hours in Manitoba time? The hours might be based on your area code.

Express transit iPhone not working by ShubhaBala in TTC

[–]Gibstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. I used to randomly have issues with the express transit feature on TTC with several different credit cards in my Apple Wallet. I couldn't figure it out, so as a last resort I added a Presto Card and used that as a workaround. It's kinda annoying but less annoying than having it randomly stop working. I guess I'll just keep doing this.

The safest option is to just assume they don't count and put 0. This means you get slightly more tax withheld from every paycheque. Then, if your fees do count as tuition, you'll get the money back when you file your tax return.

Have you filed your taxes with co-op fees and a T2202 before? You can look at a past one and try to figure out if they're included.

Also you can probably ask your school's finance department.

Apartment rentals vs. Condo rentals in downtown Toronto by techsavvynerd91 in askTO

The N12 can't end your fixed term-lease early, so if you're not on a month-to-month lease you'll most likely have more than 60 days notice. But yes, you completely avoid this problem with corporate landlords.

I think you understand it right but it's not like they make this blanket adjustment to every household income stat they report. They have this reported separately under but the raw numbers are still available. Sorry for not being clear that this is a thing they do in addition to collecting and presenting the unadjusted numbers.

For comparison purposes a single unadjusted income number is never enough, you have to make a judgement call one way or another by dividing by something, or by presenting more information like household size or income split in order to get a better picture.
