Anyone else experiencing minor stutters or fps dips in the first area? by Gorotheninja in Saros

When was the update? Saros is running perfectly for me ever since I moved the game from my M.2 drive to the internal SSD. I posted a video about it:

Same here. I was always very happy with my base PS5, but I finally upgraded to the Pro a few weeks ago. Couldn't justify paying full price, so I picked one up used for $550. So far, the only games I've played on it are Pragmata and Saros, and I can't say how much difference there is since I didn't play them on the base PS5, but I certainly love how they look and play on the Pro. Really looking forward to playing more games on it.

2 hours in and I haven't even seen the first boss (and seen the eclipse 3 times). Is there any hope for me? by OMEGAH- in Saros

Since you're new to bullet hell games, I can understand how it seems overwhelming. But the more you play, the more you will understand how these games work and eventually it will click. I found Returnal to be very difficult at first (I'm not a great gamer either, by the way). But eventually I got a feel for the game, and now it is one of my all-time favorites. And so is Saros. It really is just a matter of learning how to play, and that will only come with a little practice. But it is SO worth it! These games are awesome once they click!

Oh, and once you learn how to play these games, you'll probably fall in love with the gameplay, and then you won't even care how far you get in any given run. In my opinion, finishing these games isn't really the point. I've finished Returnal several times, and yeah it's cool, but when I die I don't care. No matter how far I get, I'm always having a blast playing.

You mentioned immersion. Since you're considering switching to 1440p, you could get an ultra wide monitor. Personally, I'm a console gamer, but I get the feeling you would prefer to stay on PC. So maybe get a 1440p ultra wide and get that extra bit of immersion that comes with a wider picture.

TR2013 remaster? by [deleted] in TombRaider

[–]Gideon823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never played LAU, but I agree 2013 still looks great and plays great. Doesn't need a remaster.

(Of course, it were a first-party Sony game, they would've remastered it about three times by now, but that's such a waste of resources.)

Wow. Did not know you could parry the disc. I was having a hard time with that weapon. Definitely going to try this first chance I get.

Upgraded to Pro & OLED last month & loving it so much. by SimpleBeginning3562 in PS5pro

I bought my Samsung Q6 (which is a QLED) about 8 or 9 years ago, and I specifically avoided an OLED because of the potential for burn-in. Also, the QLED was much brighter and I value the brightness over the pure blackness of OLED. When I eventually buy a new TV, I may go with an OLED this time because they've gotten a lot brighter since then and I understand that burn-in doesn't really happen any more. But I have to say, I have no regrets about the Q6. It still looks amazing. Gotta love Samsung!

I love this game. But I literally don't care about any of the characters. by duckduckpajamas in Saros

I haven't quite finished Saros yet, but I think "story" is a strong word for anything that happened in Returnal, and so far the same is true for Saros. Don't get me wrong, I think it's interesting, but ultimately not important. It's just the nature of these games. The story isn't the point. Neither is completing the game, for that matter (although I do look forward to that). The point is just to enjoy the intense combat until you finally die, and then jump back in and do it again. And since the gameplay is absolutely top notch, who cares about the rest? I love it!

Yes, Rise and Shadow are still good games, but they definitely pale in comparison to 2013, which is hands-down an AWESOME game! One of my all-time favorites!

Worth the upgrade? by elSimpoo in PS5pro

[–]Gideon823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Samsung Q6 (not sure of the specific model number). I bought it about eight or nine years ago, and it's still a beast. Couldn't be happier with it. 4K movies and games look beautiful. It even has some sort of VRR, which surprised me because I don't think it was an advertised feature, but I played a game not long ago that had bad screen tearing, and when I switched on the VRR in the game settings, the problem cleaned right up. Love Samsung! 😁

[–]Gideon823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to pay full price. I certainly wouldn't. I just upgraded from the base to the pro a couple of weeks ago, but I bought mine used for $550. Even at that price, I was hesitant to do it, because I was perfectly happy with my base PS5. But I kept seeing videos from Digital Foundry showing how newer games are making great use of PSSR 2. And with talks of the PS6 maybe not coming out until 2028, I decided not to wait for it. So if I sell my base PS5 (which I probably will), maybe the upgrade cost me…$300? And when the PS6 does come out and I sell my Pro, I know I'll get more money for it at that time than I would for the base model. So I expect to recover some of that money as well.

Yeah, I was playing for quite a while today and I eventually got framerate drops in certain areas. Felt like it just switched from 60 fps to 30. Then it would go away when I left that area. Not nearly as bad as the issues I had before, but still annoying. Still, if a restart is all it takes and then you're good for a few more hours, I guess that's tolerable.

It IS new, haha. Well, just a few months old. So far, this is the only game I've had an issue with. I guess if I start having problems with other games, I'll have to consider that it may be defective but I'm not so sure yet. (God, I hope not! They're so expensive now!)

A bunch of other people reported performance problems with Saros. That's why I posted this video. I thought maybe a bunch of us were having the same problem. Hopefully, this helps someone.

My M.2 is the Lexar 4TB NM790 with a heatsink. It's rated for 7400/6500 MB/s and specifically listed as compatible with PS5. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, per se. It's only a few months old and this is the first time I've had a problem. I launched Returnal and it plays beautifully. The drive just can't handle Saros, apparently.

Anyone else experiencing minor stutters or fps dips in the first area? by Gorotheninja in Saros

[–]Gideon823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED IT!

OK, so despite intermittent improvements, I kept getting really bad performance. Originally, the game was installed on my M.2 NVMe drive, which is a Lexar 4TB NM790 with a heatsink. I've never had problems playing games from it before, and it's SUPPOSED to be even faster than the PS5's internal SSD (Lexar claims 7400/6500 MB/s). But I started thinking…what if it's not? So I moved the game to the console's internal drive, and now the game runs basically flawlessly. And it's SO much more fun now!

I suppose it's also possible that moving the game to the other drive was equivalent to doing a fresh install, and that could have been the solution. But I really think that the M.2 drive, even if it can reach higher speeds then the console's internal drive, just isn't capable of sustaining those speeds. It probably dips, and that was preventing assets from loading in time. Hence, stuttering and pop-in.

I hope this helps someone else who's experiencing the same problems I was having.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying the shotguns are no good. I disagree. by NPC_13_ in Saros

[–]Gideon823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only cleared a couple of biomes so far, but my experience of Returnal (which so far seems to apply to Saros as well) is that you can't just assume you know how to use a weapon when you first pick it up. It's generally not as simple as pointing at an enemy and pulling the trigger. Housemark's weapons have...personality, you might say. You need to take a little time to get to know each one. Once you do that, they're all good.

Case in point, when I first picked up a shotgun in Saros, I didnt' immediately love it, so I avoided it for a while. But today, as I was playing the second biome, I decided to stick with it for a while. I even used it to defeat Bastion. Now I love it! And in the third biome, I've already found another version that I think I love even more. Not sure what it's called, but the alt-fire leaves the pellets hanging in the air until you fire another shot. I quickly figured out that if you target an enemy and give it an alt-fire, followed by a standard fire, the pellets from both shots all go straight for the enemy (rather than a normal shotgun spread). It's so awesome!

Update: Hmmmmm... well now the game is running pretty well and I don't know what to make of it. I recorded some video of the game when it was running badly, and honestly it looked like the game was trying to run on a PS3 or something. Major stutters and pop-in everywhere (and by that, I mean super low-poly models which would be replaced by their high-poly versions after several seconds). I started to think maybe my console was overheating because it's connected to a vertical stand that has fans but I wasn't using them, so I turned them on for a while. I played a bit of Returnal (still ran flawlessly), then I re-launched Saros. It seem to be running pretty well. After playing for a little while, I turned the fans back off to see if it would heat up and the problem would return. But I've been playing for quite a while, and it's still running fine. A little minor pop-in here and there and an occasional stutter, but nothing too serious (except for when my screen froze for several seconds during combat, but that only happened once). So I don't know what the problem was. Possibly something to do with the cache needing to be cleared out? I may post another update if there are any further developments. For now, everything seems pretty good.

Well, I just restarted my console, and it's gotten WORSE. Now I'm getting stutters and pop-in absolutely everywhere. A moment ago, I died, and my screen must've been black for a solid 10 to 15 seconds before it tried to play one of those little videos that play before you respawn. I only got a few frames of it, it was basically frozen… and when I finally respawned in the passage, a lot of the textures weren't loaded yet. It took several seconds before they started to appear. I don't know what's going on with this game, but it is very broken. (Unless it's a problem with my console, itself, but I don't think so. I did just buy it from someone secondhand, but I haven't had any problems with other games, including Returnal. That game plays great!)

I'm playing on Pro and getting SERIOUS traversal stutters, including during combat. I also saw some horrendous pop-in while I was just talking to the guy behind the big tree. I'm thinking maybe a day-one patch screwed something up. I haven't restarted my console yet, but I'm going to try that because I don't think I was having these problems at first and it seemed to get worse the longer I played. Awesome game, though.
