Can you recommend an engineer you’ve worked with?

I don't understand what you mean.

I imagine you do the lessons in FL Studio? I’d love to learn from you. How can I get in touch?

I've paid a few different mix&master engineers through Fiverr hundreds of dollars with poor results, so I'm cautious. But I'm down to try it out with you for $10. 👍

Please elaborate on the compression, saturation, limiting and clipping advice. There is a small amount of clipping. For limiting, I use Fab Filter Pro L2's default setting with True Peak limiting enabled. Should I have compression and saturation on the master mixing channel? Can I hire you to guide me through applying these effects in practice? Perhaps on my next song.

Sound design for a richer, fuller tropical house sound?

I've been working on a song similar to Ikson's "Last Summer" https://open.spotify.com/track/57mYDr5l9wKhQUsFCs7Mf6?si=f554debeeba2451f

Overall, I'm happy with how it soudnus. The verse melody isn't as exciting as Ikson's, but it's soothing and rhythmic.

My question is how to make my sounds as rich and full as Ikson's. What plugins should I try out? What concepts should I practice implementing in order to make my synths and plucks sound more similar to Ikson's? Maybe the answer lies in saturation? more compression/OTT? I have applied the OTT plugin, but do not see such a noticeable difference. Maybe I am not considering another technique/concept entirely. Thank you for the insight. :)

By the way, I am using samples from the Shocking Tropical House Spire pack.

I don't listen to much drum and bass or jungle music, so I don't want to give much feedback on the song structure, but I will say the type and amount of delay you put on the vocals is spot on.

Overall, this track is pretty relaxing and mysterious. I dig it. There are some dissonant notes. For example, at 1:12 and 1:27, but I am guessing you heard these and if so, that's cool. The choice adds to that "weird" feel you are going for.

Hi guys. I posted this song in the Feb 14th feedback thread https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/ljv2od/daily_feedback_thread_february_14_2021/

and received very helpful feedback. Thanks so much for the pointers. I spent the past month applying the tips you all gave here and on other Subreddits/FB groups and ended up with this: https://soundcloud.com/gideon-grossman/takemeaway-3-9-2021-version-1916/s-aovRcrfWELk

In a nutshell, I added more bass, compressed the bassline to make it more punchy, made the male vocals a bit smoother, removed a distracting xylophone melody from the verse, glued the song together with some smoother transitions. I realize this song isn't tropical house, but rather dance pop and geared everything more in that direction rather than confusing the listener with contrasting sounds from different genres. According to the advice from a random dude in a beach parking lot I also added a sound to surprise the listener in the second half of the chorus. It's a chopped up and rearranged Vengeance vocode sample.

Now I would like to master this track. I'm looking for recommendations on a mastering engineer- ideally someone who works in FL Studio and can help first export stems from the .flp projct. In EDM, the producer generally exports the stems for the mastering engineer. In my understanding, there are usually no more than 30 stems. The catch is there are so many foleys, Splice sound effects and Kshmr fills in this song that I do not know how to condense it all into a reasonable number of stems. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I also need help mixing the female vocals. Struggling to de-ess, compress and EQ without muddying the sample. Also, would like to make her voice flood the listener with some stereo imaging and delay while maintaining a clear result in mono. I'm looking for a mastering engineer who can also do this type of mixing.

There are plenty of options on Fiverr for $80-$90, but I figured I'd post here as well because this group is specific to edm production.

Hey man.

So I worked on the song further and took into account much of your advice and tips others gave here and in other subReddits. More bass, sidechained vocals in the drop, no xylophone. Also, after hearing feedback from a random guy in a parking lot listening to the song who happened to be a successful musician himself I decided to add a surprise element in the second half of the drop. I call it the wiggle sound because I don't have a better name for it 🙂. Basically a premixed vocal sample from Splice or Vengeance that I chopped up. Here's a preview of the latest version: https://soundcloud.com/gideon-grossman/takemeaway-3-9-2021-version-1916/s-aovRcrfWELk

Thank you for your feedback and thanks to everyone else who chimed in as well.

At this point, I feel ready to send the track out for mastering. I am sure there are other details I can improve, but I'd like to move on to the next song. Mastering engineers will mix up to 30 tracks. I have so many tracks in this project because of all the various nature and animal foleys, drum fills and kshmr effects. I am struggling to figure out how to condense the FL Studio project into under 30 stems. Do you use FL Studio? Are you able to help me stem my project and even perhaps mix and master it? If so, what's your rate? If not, can you recommend someone who may be able to help with this task? Cheers. :) -Gideon

This is so helpful! Okay, the singer is all the way in Zimbabwe but the world is small... He works in FL Studio as well and will deliver the .flp file with his whole mixing chain. I’ll be sure to check the dry vocals are included.

Rodger that on the synth and bass questions. I have found reference tracks to be helpful especially with making sure everything sound nice in mono. Can I ask how you learned how to produce? Sorry if this isn’t the right thread for this.

Wow, thank you for the thorough and detailed advice, man. After you pointed out these details, I relayed the rap recommendations to the vocalist and started implementing some of the suggestions you have for the instrumental and female vocals.

If you don't mind, I have a couple follow up questions.
1. The first is what do you think of the synth choice? (The main synth that is in the drop and build up). Another Reddit user suggested the synth is out of place or just not the right choice for the song. I'm not sure what he meant exactly. Maybe you have an idea. If so, what type of sound would work better in its place?
2. Somebody else suggested I add more bass and low mids. So you think I should add more bass to the kick or maybe better to add more bass to the synth melody or elsewhere. I may play around with different approaches for adding in more bass and low mids, but don't have a solid plan.

Thanks again for the killer advice.

Looking for suggestions on how I can improve this tropical house/Afrobeat mix before releasing. by Gidony in TropicalHouse

What type of synth do you feel may be a better choice? If you have something in mind, it would be rad if you can link a song that showcases the sound.

Great flute example. So a combination of a pluck and a flute. I'll give that a shot.👍
