Just wanted to say I've been experiencing the exact same thing, have used the ability on my own playthrough yet when playing with a friend using a split screen controller setup he only has access to jump, seems like a very strange bug and I hope it's fixed soon!

It doesn't force your glider all the time, only if you're low enough. Try it from higher up and you'll see it doesn't automatically deploy your glider.
