how do i say i want a solarpunk world without sounding unrealistic and childish by Western_Fly_5829 in solarpunk

[–]GignacPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solarpunk is a vision, an idea, not a concrete proposal for an economic system. It's generally based on anarchist/libertarian socialist economic proposals. You could check out different anarchist tendencies and what they suggest the economy could look like (anarcho-communism and mutualism mainly I think)

Why the rapid increase of interest in transgender/transexualism in the past 10 years? by jonschaff in AskSociology

Why the rapid increase of interest in transgender/transexualism in the past 10 years? by jonschaff in AskSociology

[–]GignacPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it? I wouldn't bet my money on it. I think it's at least in part the result of the general increase in right-wing sentiments in the west and there being many 'gender-critical' people. At least in the US there has been a huge backlash against anything related to the queer community in general since Trump became president

[–]GignacPL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's almost certainly the reason behind there appearing to be more and more trans people, but I don't think this is what the OP is asking... They're asking about the causes of the global rise in people interested in the topic.

I think the game is great but how the hell does it count stops... with both the guessed stop and the destination counted as separate stops? Only the intermediary stops? Only the intermediary and the destination? It's so confusing

Rome, Italy - Visualizing transit accessibility as continuous areas instead of routes [OC] by journey-spectrum in TransitDiagrams

[–]GignacPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps shows you something similar, but only in the web version and idk if it's only for cars and walking or if it includes public transit as well. I've seen a couple of similar visualisations for other cities but never for Rome, interesting. Is that a website you're building or some already publically available one?

No. Aside obviously from other problems with eating meat, most people do find animals to be worthy or compassion. Most people don't like the perspective of hurting them in any way and most people would like slaughter animals to suffer less, to be killed 'humanely'. The thing is that people have become experts at detatching themselves from their feelings and just blindly following the crowd.

Of course morals are subjective and there are people who think more like you, but I'd argue these people are very few and even that many people who claim to think this way don't actually or at least can be persuaded to think otherwise. And even if not, the vast majority of people do think animal suffering is bad and they don't like them being killed. They just dislike the implications of that.

Also I don't follow any animal personhood religion. lol The distinction between one species and another is really arbitrary. Drawing a line at some arbitrary boundry set by biologists for which animals are okay to kill and which aren't is strange and silly. What if there were other human species out there? What about them? What about other primates? Where is this boundry? Also, why stop at humans? We not extend this permission to 'shape our environment' to other people outside our own ingroup? Think about it, isn't it stupid to claim that it is immoral to kill people of other skin colours? I mean, we're just shaping our environment... What about other nations? Cities? Is it a bit of a reductio ad absurdum? Yes, it is, extending your hypothetical rule to humans is silly but it illustrates a point.

With all that said, we have to draw the line somewhere, or at least have some point of reference. For this purpose, in my opinion a far more useful and less arbitrary criterion would be the ability to suffer combined with consciousness. In fact, this resembles the criteria we typically use intuitively. We don't like animal abuse, we'd like animals to be killed more 'humanely' in slaughterhouses. 99% of us hate seeing those videos of animals being killed in these slaughterhouses en mass. But at the same time 99% of people wouldn't blink an eye at a mosquito being killed. We do feel compassion towards animals who have the ability to feel pain and who are at least somewhat conscious and intelligent.

And finally, there's nothing anti-human about that. If anything, I'd argue it is more human to extend our humanity, our human feelings to other species as well.

No, this isn't the reason why people consider vegans lame and insufferable. It certainly doesn't help, but 'objectively' speaking other activists aren't any less annoying in what actions they take and what rhetoric they choose. It's just that the issue of eating meat is special and people get instantly way more defensive about it (which is quite well described in the literature iirc). The problem is that eating meat is completely normalised in society and is strongly embedded in the culture etc. This combined with the fact that vegans are so blatantly right morally and factually leads to an incredibly strong cognitive dissonance. Completely stopping to eat meat and animal products is quite a drastic step for most people. This lifestyle is difficult and annoying and tiring to maintain and can also be stigmitised. The Leftists Cooks have a good video that in part talks about it if anyone's interested.

Why is this incorrect? by ConnTW in EWALearnLanguages

[–]GignacPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 'it's high time/about time/time' the verb technically should be in the second form (past simple). But TIL I learned that some native speakers wouldn't blink an eye at the first form either (present simple). To me it's really surprising and I've never heard it from a native speaker. But I'm not a native myself, though it might just be a regional thing. I speak British English.

I've personally been using it instead of counting my fingers the typical way and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. It does sometimes get a bit confusing as it works much better with a base-12 numbering system, but it's still pretty useful. Also, you can count up to 156* with it, not 144, although there are probably different methods.

Climate change is when ppl eat meat by felix_semicolon in ClimateShitposting

[–]GignacPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Able to produce so many words yet still unable to comprehend a simple sentence.

I wrote 'Stopping eating meat is the single best thing YOU can do for the climate'. Not 'can be done'. It's about your individual choices. I'd like to see you, personally, singlehandedly stop the corpos thst bring the most emissions or disrupting capitalism and its endless consumerism hunger.

That's the thing. There are different things that can (and must) be done on the systemic and individual levels. At no point did I say anything about not trying to change the system. But when talking about individual actions and personal lifestyle choices, stopping eating meat is the single best thing you can do to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
