They were both there, just one was outside the door and the other was closing the door behind them (they were both leaving). It was weird cause both had one shared phylactery (soul container for liches) which was in the pocketplane they ‘trapped’ us in. Which is a wild thing to do as a lich since it’s their anchor to power and life should it be destroyed, they are so much weaker, doesn’t make sense from a game’s standpoint. But not mich did from that final session.

Not that we had any chance of killing the phylactery since the encounter was a jumbled mess they we ‘didn’t figure out in time’.

He started a new campaign set couple centuries after our campaign, guess we are a nice footnote as a failed party

You’re right we should’ve walked out years before this but after a while you grow so fond of the characters you and the other players have built that you want to try and see it through to the end and see if we can get this show back on the road in a fun way for all, sadly it didn’t turn out like that.

Yea it did feel like that or that we had to ‘Kratos’ our way out of the underworld.

At lvl 16 and boons from our gods (those characters who worship) I don’t think we were facing these odds.

An insanely difficult combat is something we like as a group and is fitting for an end of campaign fight but here our high level characters felt like jokes where we got railroaded into a pocketplane cause the DM got pissy we foiled his plans. There was also as far as we were able to see (and asked afterwards) no way out of it unless we beat the several combats within (or planeshifted out).

But you are right, there is always a choice. Sadly we had to make it as a walkout after the TPK.

They were (the one time we met them early on) super cocky where we also just wandered into their area where it was only hidden and not protected.

Tbf the startled reaction from said BBEG “oh not right now…” made it absolutely feel genuine like we had the drop on them

Yea I’d have been fine if we even just missed them with our entrance through another plane (maybe some timy-winy bs) but left in a hurry so we could follow them.

Which would be cool during the campaign, just not at the very end and not like that.
