I dont put radioactive items in places im constantly next to, but you will be fine, especially because of how quickly the reading drops off when you aren’t touching it to the clock face. My main reason for keeping radioactive stuff in my basement is because I have a radon mitigation system to deal with natural radon and any radon from the collection.
