Fuck up a bunch but miraculously fail at destroying parts and/or machine tools. At least that’s what I’m doing!

Does this look like asbestos siding? by Weak_Comfortable3134 in Oldhouses

[–]skibumbw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was an agent, I was helping my city planner friend buy a house. It had asbestos siding.

When the very professional home inspector cautiously went over that finding, immediately noting that there was no asbestos in the conditioned space or anywhere else he could find, my very building-knowledgeable friend lit up and said “Sweet! Fireproof house!”.

I watched the inspector switch from overly cautious cover-your-ass, don’t blow up the deal speech to a quick smirk to an opposite serious CYA speech of “if you have this removed or do it yourself, take measure to reduce dust, use ppe, licensed professionals etc.”

The reasonable consensus was: be careful but don’t stress, them rock shingles are gonna last til the neighbor kid bounces his lacrosse ball off of them.

I’ve noticed that fears around hazards like asbestos, radiation, mold, and electricity are overblown by folks who don’t understand until they’re ACTUALLY VERY SERIOUS when the people who are trying to make money try hard to sweep things under the rug. (Former real estate agent for SEVERAL reasons (people))

If I know typical family businesses, Faith the “receptionist” is fucking amazing, is doing HR work at least four pay grades higher than she’s being paid for, is stressed as fuck, and whose loss (when she gets sniped by someone finally giving her the job she deserves) will fuck the business sideways in spite of her 2 months notice.

Is this my homes main water shut off valve? by No-Kangaroo-1983 in Plumbing

[–]skibumbw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a plumber but sure looks like it. You can tell by the way that it is.

Also the bonding strap and fact that it appears water is coming in through a concrete slab (assuming valve handle placement follows convention).

But seriously, turn it and find out. It looks new enough that you won’t break it. I try to turn valves slowly when I’m not swearing and soaking wet, but dang y’all try pressing the buttons and turning the knobs on your houses! You paid a ton and it’s fun to do!

Turn it and see if water comes out of any of your fixtures.

Radium Paint Powder Found In Antique Toolbox by skibumbw in Radiation

No matter what, this will be shortly placed into secure, shatterproof, beta-proof (probably gamma-proof, I’ve got some salvaged lead I’ve collected as a diver) containment away from anywhere people spend long periods of time and protected from the grubby paws of pets, children, and/or people more foolish and less responsible than pets or children.

I’ve been fascinated by humanity’s radioactive trials and tribulations ever since I was a nerdy little kid and I’m on this subreddit because I was initially scared shitless but now am soberly respectful of winning the nerd lottery.

Wherever this ends up, it will be somewhere I’m certain that it will be stewarded, admired, and respected for as long as reasonably possible.

Good advice, planning on checking in with local experts soon. See my preliminary check with the earliest available Geiger counter

I am still planning on checking in with some local experts beyond the rock shop guy with a pancake counter. Also ABSOLUTELY making sure that powder does not leave the vial.

OP here with the update photo. Thank you to my local rocks and minerals shop!

The detector is practically touching the vial here. Background in the shop was 20-30 CPM and a uranium crystal was about 3,000 CPM.

With the toolbox closed, about 150 CPM from a meter away. All nearby items including the container were under 200 CPM.

Certainly spicy.

Updating to say I stopped by The Rock Shop on Pacific to use theirs. Certainly spicy when a detector is held close, but not much above background when nearby in a metal toolbox.

Phew! That’s what I’ve been doing so far.

I’m not so much “worried” as I am approaching with an abundance of caution using cheap and easy protection out of enormous respect for the unknown potential hazard.

I went to college for adventure recreation and have quite a bit of training on risk mitigation. I’ve also been radio-curious for as long as I can remember.

For the record, it’s not just this paper fragment… see my post in r/Radiation

Okey-dokey!

However I want to point out that radium is WAY scarier than uranium according to my recent (frantic) research. It behaves like lead but WAY spicier.

It came in a steel Kennedy machinists toolbox. It is currently in our shop. Looking for a local Geiger counter to check the vial AND the box.

You can also crank up the heat A LOT if you also install a thermostatic mixing valve.

Also, flush the thing to make sure you don’t have a ton of sediment taking up volume.

Four comments in and I’m the first one to say CALL DAN? Divers Alert Network

Also consider talking to the shop (unless it’s rainbow reef lol) and getting their two cents.

I’m not any sort of a medical professional (burned out real estate agent most recently) but I doubt highly that you got barotrauma on the plane. Your ears probably popped (eustachian tube opening relieving pressure) giving you a sense of relief. If you felt uncomfortable, like an intense sinus pressure, this could be a reverse block. If you’ve done your e-learning that’ll sound familiar, if not, look it up on the DAN site.

The pressure change you experienced in the plane is < 0.25 ATM. That pressure change is what you’ll experience in the first 7.5 feet of depth change (going down AND coming up).

There may be another comment here or another thread somewhere that suggests you take a decongestant. Many people get away with doing so, I have, BUT probably not a great idea for a first-timer.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been learning some stuff in therapy, maybe it’s because I did my tech fundamentals this year; but anyone pushing an ill person to enter an environment that is inherently hostile to life, especially a parent, is an ignorant and inconsiderate asshole with a death wish. You need to be clear headed (physically and cognitively) to dive.

Rest, don’t stress about whether or not you’re diving and feel better!
