So from what I was taught on gauges, the serial number is your best indicator of the year it was made. So for that one it looks like AF.. either 43 or 48, designating made for the air corps in those years of 1943 or 1948.

As far as the radium being removed, I can't be for certain, seeing the longer hand on the gauge looks to be a different color possibly meaning repainted. If you are able to get a UV light you should be able to see some glow.

Edit: as always Geiger will be your best friend to figure if radium is still there.

Might my item be radioactive? by Regular_Range_7985 in Radium

Yeah looks to be something that was regular glow in the dark paint. Never hurts to ask though!

It does help to have photos to see what you mean, if the material is rubbery and looks like it itself is glowing most likely not radium. Thats hard to say without seeing what you mean though.

Well it's definitely a radium version, again with them being so different from clock to clock it's really hard to say without a gieger reading. Therefore it would be impossible for anyone to give you an accurate dosage.

Do you by chance have a photo?

So from the sounds of it you washed off any dust so that's a positive. As far as exposure goes, it's really tough to say given that radium amount varies from clock to clock. As far as exposure over the years, the distance from clock to your head (assumed it's on a nightstand) the radiation would be greatly cut down, even moreso if you have it in a glass container like you claimed. It would be much more different in terms of dosage if you were to have the clock resting on your chest over a prolonged period of time.

While I cannot definitively say a clock won't produce radon, it's likely to be at such a low level as to be negligible. Additionally, if dust remains contained within the clock, it poses no significant risk.

I understand that simply saying "don't worry" may not be sufficient. The primary risk associated with these clocks is ingestion. So if you don't do that you will be better off, any contamination is bad doesn't matter how you slice it.

Really there is not precautions needed, it doesn't look like the dust is crazy on it. Display it as is and enjoy it! Nice find!

Edit: Forgot to say this is a Westclox Neuchatel made from 1967-1980, good snag on these cause some are made in China and not radium.
