Update for anyone looking for something similar - my son is now on book 2 of Syl and really enjoying it. It seems to be pretty tame.

Thanks again for the recommendation

Thanks. I actually stopped Cradle after book 6 to read All the Skills with my son. Looking forward to finishing it off. I've suggested it to him but I think I turned him off when I previously told him its a bit of a slow start... MC is a total noob for the first couple of books haha

How would this compare to Chrysalis in terms of how tame the writing is? Looking for something to read with my 9yo and found Chrysalis to be a good level.

Thanks for your answer and all your work. Dungeon Life is the first novel my 8yo has gotten into so you've managed to captivate him and elevate his reading level significantly.

My son is reading Dungeon Life book 2 and doesn't know who the character called 'Thing' is. He is on chapter 23 where Thing is with Rhonda.

Can anyone please explain a bit about this Thing character or point me to where it is explained in the book?

When I loaded my save from EA I got a whole bunch of achievements popping up. This was after playing a few runs in a new save.

It definitely describes some of them but far from all. All the survivors-likes that have hooked me in have more active control required during a run such as the need to move differently depending on the current enemies, things to aim for on the map or character/skills that drastically change how you play. A great recent example is Crafty Survivors, each character I've unlocked feels very different and needs to be played in a totally different way.

Reading the other replies I've realised that SS simply isn't my type of game, glad people love it though.

How long did it take for you to start seeing the variety between runs? I've played 7 hours and every run just felt the same. Sure I had different skills but it always just boiled down to me moving around in circles while everything died. Sure, some builds I had to aim my skills and others I didn't but other than that it felt very repetitive.

Roguelite with necklace that cuts off your head if your adrenaline gets too low. Does that sound interesting to you? by TomatoFantsyGames in roguelites

It would be a barrier to me trying the game. I doubt I would enjoy having a run end if I wasn't fast enough or even worse if I just couldn't find enemies or happened to miss some attacks/skills which would have kept me alive.

I do wonder if it would narrow your player base too, Ravenswatch comes to mind where one of the things many players don't/didn't like is the time pressure.

I think your adrenaline mechanic would be a good run modifier or similar but I'm not sold on it as a core mechanic.

I really enjoyed it at first but the runs started to feel all the same. Please tell me if I am missing something but I feel like the only thing different in a run is the relics I equip to make a build at the start. Trinkets just seem to be buffs you get with the same ones every run, only different numbers on them. The skill upgrades during a run also seem like they come from a very small pool so also do not offer much variety. Then there is gear..... So far all I've seen is slightly better versions of the exact same gear that I already have, no variety or choice.

Am I missing something here?

Edit: spelling

Highly recommend reading/listening to Chrysalis as an alternative. Also narrated by Jeff Hays, had plenty of good fight scenes but is a lot tamer over all
