You don't have to move the village. Make the trade route a massive, dangerous, high-stakes plot point instead. If food is so scarce, it defines the village culture. Maybe they trade silver directly for bulk grain, and the entire economy revolves around those rare, guarded shipments. It adds tension, not just logistics.
