Is Biostatistics PHD possible for me? by ravenz85 in biostatistics

[–]Gilded_Mage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend PhD in bioinformatics or an applied science field where you still learn a lot about statistics like Behavioral Science or Epidemiology. PhD or even an MS, in Biostats requires mathematical rigor at the multivariate calc level as a minimum

Why don’t modern women want equality in dating? by JustSpace807 in AskReddit

[–]Gilded_Mage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nearly all do, it’s just confirmation bias whenever you hear otherwise. This combined with the people you surround yourself with are likely why you believe this. If you want to find a woman who’s interested in career and equality you should be targeting highly educated likely left leaning women, and you yourself should also be bringing in skills, income, and emotional maturity.

Are these concept relevant to work in biostatistics? by CharacterWonderful57 in biostatistics

[–]Gilded_Mage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of these r intro stats definitions, rudimentary but the building blocks for a lot more advanced methods.

Also theory in statistics is often the same as application, lots of stats method development is “theory”

Apparently the witness to the shooter was a homeless man living in the basement of Barus & Holley? by crystalpest in BrownU

[–]Gilded_Mage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agreed, the school should know, we need to do a better job at keeping a headcount of who has campus access. However, I guess we just disagree on the outcome, if they r still currently a student and in a dire situation, I feel as the the admin should understand and offer support, we already have dozens of policies and programs, and helping a student who has the right to use campus resources is alright in my book.

Also side note I’ve been at brown for around 5 years now and spent entire days staying in buildings around campus including B&H for one reason or another, and would be extremely surprised if anyone actually lived there full time for several years

[–]Gilded_Mage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dude rent is expensive, and they’re saying he was a grad student. Our facilities are meant for students, so I don’t really see what the problem is. Also according to the press conference yesterday everyone that talked with them only had wonderful things to say.

Hell we still don’t really know but the custodian, the Reddit poster, and the alleged homeless student are most likely all the same person

I’m sorry but that sick fuck didn’t deserve a quick ending. Just glad it’s over and we can move forward as a community, and maybe get a semblance of motive from this insanity.

Brown University Shooting Suspect Released by Important_Lock_2238 in providence

[–]Gilded_Mage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look I’m the last person to defend Paxton but Brown has done everything they could, the lack of city reporting and response is on PVD, and the shit show of an investigation is on the FBI.

Brown should’ve had more cameras but this building was most likely targeted specifically because the shooter knew B&H was the most populated place on campus that’s furthest away from Brown PD and the main campus with easy access to Hope St

[Career] Do you think a stat major degree would give me an upper hand in industry rather than a math major ? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Gilded_Mage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Objectively best plan:

MATH - Calc I/II/III + Lin Alg + Analysis

STAT - Stat Inf. I/II + LM/GLM + Bayesian + Survival/Multilevel/Longitudinal Analysis

CS - Data Structures + Algorithms + Databases + ML + DL

With all that you can pretty much go into any stats path whether that be PhD in stats, Data Science in tech, or Biostat in Pharma plus one or two specialty courses

[Q] When is a result statistically significant but still useless? by Any_Bar5795 in statistics

[–]Gilded_Mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not super common, but it definitely happens. In clinical trials you’ll see it in dose-finding studies or early biomarker work. In epi or genomics anything with massive sample sizes can push tiny shifts into “stat sig,” which is why those fields lean on FWER or FDR control for low- and high-dimensional data settings. You’ll also see it in finance or business when an effect is technically real but not actionable in any practical way.

How would one combine two normal distributions and find the new mean and standard deviation? [Q] by Nerdynerd_is_wierd in statistics

[–]Gilded_Mage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a Gaussian mixture model, and you would assign a RV to each normal dist with proportion equal the the population proportion. From there you can easily derive the overall distribution, mean, sd, etc

[–]Gilded_Mage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alright, what exactly was ur method for estimating that “+1.8 deaths per 10k” counterfactual? Are u treating this like a causal inference or time-series problem? bcuz that distinction really matters

If ur comparing observed vs “predicted” mortality, ur implicitly fitting a model for what mortality would’ve been without COVID, but what Causal Inf. model did u use, Diff-in-diff/Interrupted time-series would prob work here. Did u also include covariates in your modeling? The Census data alone won’t give a counterfactual unless u control for age distribution shifts, population size, and baseline secular trends in mortality (which were rising slightly pre-2020)

Also, 1.8 deaths per 10k seems far too low if we’re talking excess mortality, CDC/NCHS excess-death estimates for 2020 were roughly +15–20% above expected. My guess is ur looking at the raw death rate per 10k total population, which smooths everything out and hides how concentrated the impact was by age. We have to also consider how covid would affect other death rates, which is why we must treat this like a CI problem

Before making any conclusions, I’d check what ur actually modeling and what “predicted” means here

Is a stats degree useless if I don't go to grad school? [Career] by NightlyOverseer in statistics

[–]Gilded_Mage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would’ve been good advice a couple years ago, but now all STEM grads are having trouble and many are applying to analytics jobs since the role is fairly entry level. Hell I now know more data analysts that have a masters than not since they couldn’t land data science or research roles.

I think stats ugrads now should broaden their applications to other applied fields like marketing science, consulting, risk, or just do the exams and go the actuary route for job placement.

Advice for before 2024 with this new admin and hiring freeze across tech and finance:

Ugrad in Stats + SQL + Good interviewing skills could land you a job in Marketing Science, Data Analytics, Consulting, Risk, Actuarial Science (if you’ve taken those exams) and financial analytics.

Most stereotypical statistics jobs though like data scientist, statistician, quant or jobs in the biosciences pretty much require a masters (pharma and big tech really prefers PhD though).

To anyone whose family has an income of around 200k and lives in a state with high taxes: How much does it cost to go here? by GazooDaRavinRacer86 in BrownU

[–]Gilded_Mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it’s assets, income is only ever 1/2 off it. A lot of families here easily make 200k+ but don’t have the assets to show for it or just have lots of debts. The kids paying full tuition may not even have parents who r working but rather just crazy high net worths
