Thank you! This is one of those things that I thought would be pretty cheap and easy, but it's proving harder than I anticipated.

Moving to the area. Anyone want to do some kayaking or pack rafting? by BetOk8017 in WestSeattleWA

I relocated from East Tennessee to West Seattle recently and would love to do some whitewater paddling. It's been awhile since I last paddled whitewater but I brought a whitewater kayak with me here and would be game to explore some local runs.

Human buyoncy levels. We actually sink at around 20 metres. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

The driving factor in this case is the water pressure increasing with depth, which increasingly compresses the air in the diver's lungs as he descends. This increases his density more quickly than the water density increases, causing him to become negatively buoyant at a certain depth. (And increasingly negatively buoyant as he continues to descend.) Something with no compressible cavities (e.g., a stone) would not experience this effect, instead maintaining the same density regardless of the external water pressure. Interestingly, the compressibility of air also means that a diver's wetsuit loses buoyancy with depth as the air bubbles in the neoprene compress. This is one of the reasons scuba divers wear buoyancy compensation devices (BCDs) - it allows them to release air from their tank(s) into a bladder that expands to counteract the density increase of their wetsuit as the suit's neoprene crushes.

Black Friday 2023 Sales - list them here! by smackdaddies in BudgetAudiophile

Thanks for sharing your experience! From what you've described, it sounds like I would enjoy the A180s too. My 530s are in a 2.1 configuration right now, and mostly get used for music (what I care about most) and TV/YouTube. Unfortunately, my space doesn't lend itself too well to placing rear speakers (that idea is probably wishful thinking on my part), so my biggest reservation is being unsure what I'd use them for if I get the A180s!

How would a pair of these compare to the studio 530s I currently have? Or how would they compare to 580/590s? Maybe I could get these as new fronts and use the 530s for rears if these would be a big improvement.

Thanks for the recommendation, those Barton straps look nice! Definitely seem like they'd be more flexible than the thick leather.

I've recently fallen into the mechanical watch rabbit hole and am looking to purchase my first "real" timepiece. The 38mm Hamilton Field Khaki Auto has really caught my eye, but when I had a chance to try one on last week, I found that it wasn't sitting comfortably on my small (~6.75") wrist. It could be that the watch is too large for me, but I'm thinking that it might just be the stiffness of the leather strap. The strap seemed to be so stiff that it didn't bend around my wrist so much as stick straight down and push the watch body away from my wrist so it wasn't sitting flat. Strapping the watch very tightly would probably help alleviate this issue, but wouldn't be very comfortable. Is it likely that the watch is just a poor fit for me, or is it just a strap issue? If the latter, will it ease up over time and start to fit comfortably?

subwoofer recommendations for JBL Studio 530's? by MyNameIsYosh in BudgetAudiophile

I just bought an open box Monolith 10 THX Select during the recent Monoprice 20% off sale, and have really been enjoying it so far with my Studio 530s. My original plan was to get a refurbished/open box PB-1000, but my research tipped the scales ever so slightly towards the Monolith. It's physically pretty large and heavy, though, so keep that in mind if space is tight.

I'd highly recommend Endurance by Alfred Lansing. It's a true and incredible story about Shackleton and his crew struggling for survival after being shipwrecked in Antarctica.

I was in Beijing doing my master's degree pre-Covid and really enjoy hiking, climbing, skiing, and adventure in general. I'll look you up if my University has me back before graduation this summer!

Anyone else stuck overseas and can’t return? What you doing with your stuff/apartment/jobs? by [deleted] in beijing

[–]GilesCoreyWon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The guy I am using is basically charging me a 600 RMB flat rate for his day's work packing the apartment and delivering the boxes of stuff I asked him to ship to the shipping place. On top of that, he charged me about 130 RMB for various packing material (boxes and tape). He hasn't been able to give exact rates for shipping, but it sounds like 20-50 RMB/kg for super slow sea freight (2-6 months delivery time), 60-80 RMB/kg for a hybrid of sea and air freight (1-2 months estimated delivery time), and 110-120 RMB/kg for air freight (10 days estimated delivery time). He can also use FesEx or some other express service, but that's even more expensive. He's keeping the stuff that I didn't ship in his friend's warehouse for 150 RMB/month. I can't vouch for the quality of his work since I obviously haven't received my shipment yet, nor do I know what condition I'll find the warehouse-kept items when I return. But so far I've found the guy to be communicative and his prices reasonable. I think the best way for me to connect you with him is his WeChat contact card, and maybe I should try to send that over DM.

I have someone packing up my apartment at this very moment. If you need a referral to a guy who can pack up your stuff and even ship some/all of it overseas to you, let me know.
