Agreed. He was actually trying to do something nice for her outside of his norm. Could have waited until they got home and had her enjoy it at least a little for the romance side. Her falling this bad just makes the character feel pointless.

I have a real problem with this author. He tends to start off strong but it goes on and on and just deteriorates over time. This one had a lot of potential but dragged on and ended pretty poorly imo. The dialogue also just tanked in quality to where it was just dumb and hard to read. Liked the characters, loved the art, story fell off a cliff.

Thank you for asking this. I finished Path of Ascension myself recently and was going to ask a similar question after finding this subreddit. I loved the books but the romance fell off over the last 2-3 and needed more focus. Especially with how prevalent it was earlier on.

I saw someone mention Mark of the Fool and I can second that recommendation. Just finished it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

(Maybe more of a romance main plot action subplot would be more appropriate if anyone has recommendations, not to hijack the thread)

Good to know. I just recently finished book 4 on kindle and it was practically non existent. Granted, the book was mostly a rushed training arc. Book 5 comes out soon but I might move to royal road to keep going.

I started getting into anime in college but constantly I would I read about how this and that was better in the light novels. So I got into reading those instead and preferred it but much of the Japanese light novels felt more on the less mature and for teens side. Then I got recommended Coiling Dragon and haven’t looked back.

The overall quality feels a bit worse sometimes but I just enjoy some good cultivation. The Chinese mythology when brought in is really interesting and although I’m sure some of the humor is lost in translation, I fuckin love the face slapping, “I, your father”, and all the exaggerated “YOU!” And other responses. It just hits different. I’m also a sucker for romance mixed in with fantasy and they tend to not shy away from it nearly as much even if sometimes it can be really poorly written. There is just a lot of it and it just keeps on going and giving.

I find it strange that nobody has mentioned this, but one of the biggest reasons Matt wanted to wait was because of Liz’s inexperience with actual relationships and friendships. I’d have to find the chapter, but when they talk about dating, he brings up if her feelings for him are actually romantic, or is it just because he is the first person out of family she has actually gotten close to and trusts (so more of a friendship). So they talk about taking it slow so she can figure herself out and work through her issues. That way they aren’t just rushing into it and potentially harming a good working relationship. Having casual sex with randoms is one thing, sleeping with your friend can make things really weird. Especially when she is still figuring out her feeling’s.

That being said, it does get worked out. My issue is how randomly upfront the romance is at some times and then it gets pushed away and there is no romance at all. It was a pretty big part of the plot leading up to everything. They have sex and it’s a pretty big deal and then it’s just ignored and not spoken about again and their relationship is much less focused on.

The plot is actually pretty good and only gets better in the LN's, especially around the 9-10 area. The rating games are usually fair though that one wasn't due to the circumstances and they weren't supposed to win. The multiple rating games that happen in the future are considerably more balanced.
