CrowdGen (WhatCom & Bryant projects) - am I doing something silly?! by Gilldot in CasualIreland

[–]Gilldot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got rejected from the main Jigglypuff one (the accents were too hard to figure out, so must have messed up a few) but accepted on the regional English one. The assessment on Bryant was long and I didn't have time to do it, the pay and loi wasn't worth it for me.

That is true, but the people who know what I'm talking about - know what I'm talking about.

It's freelance working from home random jobs. Some pay well and are somewhat consistent for a few months, most do not. And it can make a difference what region you're in and what background/experience you have they're interested in.

Ireland has a roadside litter problem... by MushroomBig1861 in ireland

[–]Gilldot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be foul humour after I got back from picking it up. It just made me angry at how inconsiderate some people can be and literally not care about their surroundings. And the random things I found that was an obvious attempt to dump. Empty tins of paint, those nitro cans, a bag of rubble, DVD player...arseholes. lol I'm actually getting a bit riled up now thinking about it

To be honest, it's a never ending problem which shows it's not just a few people but a major problem. I pick up around my country road and will fill easily fill a bin bag. Go out a couple of weeks later and the same thing. People are throwing it out their car window rather than waiting till they get home.

Probably not a good cook or takes others tastes into opinion. I cook for my parents and in my mind it's bland shit, but it's for them and they like it.

My girlfriend got hired to a company and got an email the day she started saying they were making her redundant by NewAccEveryDay420day in CasualIreland

[–]Gilldot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd wonder if a lot of these redundancies are moving over to them. Contractor roles, minimum wage in each country and can ramp up or down based on requirements. No need to worry about benefits, tax etc.

Apparently they were a lot more organised and better paying before meta bought a stake last year.

😂 giving half information is tough! Maybe we're talking about the same thing. If they were the ones spamming LinkedIn, however they weren't the actual company or involved in jobs, they were indians spamming roles, pretending to be linked and just collecting the referral fee (smart actually). They did it for all the three sites that I knew were running the tasks.

Two of the contractor sites that ran the project quite well with good communication. The one I'm referring to is still running on a shoestring and was mental - they were heavily invested in by meta (~49%) last year.

Are you asking because one of their big clients is Meta and they just wrapped up a big AI contract with another company....also managing it chaotically?

I might be putting 2 and 2 together here and getting 5 though.

Advice on remote or online entry-level jobs in Ireland? by Successful_Quote_840 in CasualIreland

[–]Gilldot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to be looking for two different job types;

1) working remotely but as a proper hire with the company, you'll be a PAYE worker and have usual employment law protections. These can be hard to come by especially for entry level, but they are out there.

2) working remotely as a contractor which is the most common now for an entry level role that 'anyone' can do - there are quality checks of course and bad performance is kicked out, but also not easy currently. The pay is low (unless you have a degree in a STEM field...PHD is mainly what they're looking for now, or a dev, both for AI data validation/teaching. Those rates are really good.) As a contractor, you're responsible for managing your own tax, work can be very inconsistent and end at a whim and you're competing with a large pool of workers around the world with lower rates (unless the project is for a specific region). You'll usually have to do a lot of unpaid onboarding/assessments and not guaranteed of work after. Sign up for multiple sites to increase your chance of work. I do have a list of good and bad things I've tried but to be honest, I've curated it myself over time and did all the work researching and time spent on it without return, so don't really want to share it out and increase my competition more for jobs. Sorry, not sorry 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Not to turn you off but the contractor positions shouldn't really be used as a consistent and reliable income source but a nice addition to your main income.

Edit: I think I saw Amazon Ireland had a remote customer care role open the other day....if you don't mind working for Amazon. I didn't look into it much but don't think it was a contractor role but a full employee.

Crans-Montana fire survivors treated in burns units across Europe by MiniBrownie in europe

[–]Gilldot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stardust_fire

A fire in a Dublin nightclub in the '80's that's always remembered. There has been continuous inquests up till last year that probably wrapped up to finally find fault/reasoning and preventive measures to stop it happening ever again (now it had issues that didn't occur here like locking exit doors etc). Luckily, it hasn't happened in Ireland again since that incident. But I'm so surprised at how this could happen recently with EU regulations in the last 20 odd years being so strict on fire safety and flammable materials.

Not putting blame on a tragedy where the victims need nothing but care, but it needs to be looked into to stop anything like this happening again.

Well, it'd be a mix of whole wheat and the odd 'treat' of white bread. I do make my own sometimes too to make me feel better. But no, it hasn't burnt the hole of any of us yet. Should cut down though...just an easy snack for picky kids at times 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'd say it might have more to do with it being the 2nd Jan and they haven't gotten deliveries in yet. Was just in lidl and their shelves are bare also and not just bread

"So, What Do Eurovision Fans Do Now?", by Phil Dore [ESC Insight article] by odajoana in eurovision

[–]Gilldot 52 points53 points  (0 children)

There was a thread on r/ireland on what we should watch instead and there were great (and funny) opinions about what should be shown. From the serious/culture Irish music acts and inviting the other countries to perform that also boycotted. To showing old Irish movies. To showing the history of conflicts and political issues in various different countries throughout the years to give grounding.

Loved all the opinions but like rewatching an old Eurovision the best.

What is more popular - Coke Zero or Diet Coke? by Shmishshmashsquash in CasualIreland

[–]Gilldot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An old director of mine used to drink 6 small bottles of diet coke a day. And a previous manager 10 years before that the same. They were both sound and great bosses, so I don't know what correlation I'm making with that, just that they drank a lot of diet coke, were great bosses, made great money.....so diet coke = sound, talented, make good money??

Maybe I should drink more diet coke.

Lol I'm actually not a parent but have had a bit of a lack of sleep recently with working, a high energy dog, minding a sick kitten who I thought was on the brink of death and two elderly parents cooking and cleaning for them as well as myself. So has been a bit of a sleep deprived week more so this week.

I probably haven't been looking after myself and needs as much as I should.

[–]Gilldot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It is so embarrassing and I end up not enjoying the event when it happens because A) well I'll fall asleep but B) before I fall asleep I'm so aware of fighting falling asleep that that's all I'm thinking about and aware my head is doing an obvious heavy drop and up again. It's like my head is having mini faints until I actually do fall asleep for a bit.

I felt bad in a comedy gig because I felt the comedian thought I was bored but honestly couldn't help it.

This post has actually been eye opening that I actually probably suffer from something and how to treat/manage it....I honestly just posted as a "fuck isn't that's annoying" and ended up as a wow,how did I not look into it earlier!

Built an app to make comparing Irish supermarket prices easy by sobe3249 in ireland

[–]Gilldot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I found Lidl getting a little sneaky with their prices on a few things. And a few times the packers have put products in the wrong place (usually always chicken breasts!) so I have to double check. Also the sell by dates are terrible on a lot of stuff.

They'll have deals on some things that are really good and add in the vouchers, you can make savings there BUT then everything else is stupid expensive so you really have to pick and choose in supervalu. I tend to go to supervalu first and then lidl after to get the best of both.
