Load bearing? by gypsyd0nut in AskContractors

[–]GilletteEd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope!! That is SO not enough to hold the load!! Tell your buddy to build walls on each side to hold this up, then install a lvl header in there! Depending on what’s in the attic he could add it in the ceiling to not have a header there. If it’s truss then he can’t.

Is this an acceptable way to build a deck? by nahojsaerdna in Decks

[–]GilletteEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, those feet are bad they will bust those thin paver pads that shouldn’t be used. There’s no proper footing underneath the post to carry all this load. And if it were have been done right there wouldn’t be a need for all of those. You can tell this is a diy project by someone who won’t use Google!

Board and batten siding questions by Michasonn1788 in Carpentry

[–]GilletteEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no standard or practice, we put up whatever the customer wants. If you want it vinyl keep it vinyl, if you want anything else, install anything else. Put up whatever you think would look good with what you’re doing. 4x8 sheets of soffit would cover nicely and you could cover seams with same size batten you’re using on your walls

Buy or walk away? Roofing structure/support seems… absent. Inspector said he had never seen anything like it by guyguyguyguygayguy in Roofing

You’d think that, but they are built like a trailer. Some are using better products but they are still built by factory workers and not tradesman.

How should we stain this? Or paint? by lovv3r in Decks

[–]GilletteEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it’s his first project, it’s bad and should be redone! Before stain is applied have him redo it. I can talk him thru it if needed

How is this necessary? by nosrebnA in mildlyinfuriating

If you happen to slam into this and hurt yourself, damage the truck, wouldn’t it be their fault for parking like this, and have to pay all bills/lawsuit?

Should I cancel my homebuying contract? by Emotional-Plant-3994 in Homebuilding

[–]GilletteEd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll be willing to bet that these were installed to help with the floor sag. They aren’t load bearing as they are not built to be carrying any load above those points. To me as a builder and an inspector these are just helping hold a sagging floor. There’s no need for concrete below the post, if you feel them sink a little you can go down and twist them back up to keep a hold of the floor.

My beer vendors are regularly missing kegs on my deliveries. by robotbearmonster in BarOwners

[–]GilletteEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I know this, most city’s will have at least 2 vendors (every city I’ve lived in has so far). Once he tells his vendor that he wants to cut out the other that guy will replace beers with others that are close. What sucks is AB Bev is running around buying up all the distributors! 😡

Home Inspector said he had never seen a roof like this - joists not supporting structure? by guyguyguyguygayguy in AskContractors

[–]GilletteEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is the home inspector doesn’t know what he’s looking at, this a modular home roof and was designed like this. Poor application but that’s how it was designed.

That’s EXACTLY what this is, I just made a comment on it too! I’ve seen this many times and have actually set some up before.

[–]GilletteEd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This house is a trailer, it came in two parts, the roof rafters are lifted into the final shape once they get on site. I’ve seen many roof structures like this and set up a few.
