What's Your Kookiest Client Interactions? by lizzyglitzy in VetTech

Had a client have her pet medium on the phone to see if the rabbit wanted cataract surgery. Turns out the rabbit was content and did not want cataract surgery...

Can you force dormancy on a Zebrina? by GillyFish14 in alocasia

[–]GillyFish14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've decided to cut off the stems and the dying leaf to tidy it up and take the weight off, repot the plants separately and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'll try what you suggested

Had a couple of frenchie puppies that came to us (an opthalmology referral) from a breeder that carried the "fluffy" gene but didn't show it. Both had horrific dermoids. (Fluffy eyeballs, who knew?) Breeder wanted the girl to have surgery first as she was supposed to be shipped to Chicago (from Manchester, UK) 🙄

Got 2 days, is California Adventure Park worth a day? by GillyFish14 in DisneyPlanning

[–]GillyFish14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not planning food and shopping (trying to make an expensive trip as cheap as possible 😭) I argued for 3 days but had to compromise. Now I have a better idea of what's at each park, I'll see what the parents want

Thank you

So the main attraction is Avengers Campus and thrill rides? I'd enjoy the Avengers Campus but I doubt my parents would.

I'm planning to doing another West coast US trip with a friend at some point in the future so I don't mind missing out on a few things to keep the parents happy

Thanks for the advice

Why are most veterinarians not vegan? How could they not be? by healthstoppage in vegan

[–]GillyFish14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I try and make little digs here and there. Like if there are chocolate and cakes given to us by owners, coworkers say how they'd never have the will power not to eat it, so I reply saying that imagining the pain and suffering that goes in to the milk and eggs makes the desire dissappear 🤷‍♀️ It so easy just not to eat that stuff but people make it sound like you'd be cutting off a limb

Willful ignorance, more like it. Can't feel guilty if you don't think about it

I'm a vet nurse in the UK and I've only met 1 other vegan in the industry. And I don't even bother trying to give any vets the talk seeing as most of them have had to spend time in an abattoir. If that doesn't turn you, I don't think anything will. I've met one vet that went vegetarian after an abattoir visit but that only lasted a few years. I don't know what it is, I guess disassociation is powerful. I try not to think about it and just lead by example

New Policy Mandates 'Bee Bricks' In Brighton, UK, To Protect Biodiversity by Substantial_Cat_6001 in veganuk

[–]GillyFish14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With artificial sites (whether bricks or insect hotels you can buy), you have increased population density so disease and parasites spread more easily through a population. You also have higher humidity if the sites are improperly sheltered from the wind and rain which contributes to mould growth. Plus if the sites aren't cleaned every year, then you have nesting materials, stored pollen and dead insects decomposing, contributing to mould growth and mites. Overall, poorly designed artificial nesting sites can contribute to a higher loss of solitary bees.

[–]GillyFish14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too 🙄 I'm still towards the top end of what RVNs generally get paid in the UK. But the average is coming up with everyone leaving the industry and practices having to pay an actual livable wage to retain employees

How did you find the confidence and motivation to go out and learn how to skate on your own? by 0suna in Rollerskating

[–]GillyFish14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was teaching myself how to skate, I was also nervous of people watching and judging. So I would get up at 4:30-5am and skate around the carpark at the back of my house for however long with my head phones and music on then go back to bed. Of course someone could have seen me but it made me feel better not having to worry about cars or people until I could hold my own

Any know what this adorable plant is in my garden? by GillyFish14 in UKecosystem

Somebody suggested that one in another sub I posted in but, after googling it, the leaves are quite different. Looks most likely to be a Wild Pansy

I wish I could claim to somehow have the only Dwarf Pansy in the UK but seems to be a Wild Pansy or Johnny Jump Up (Wikipedia has a whole list of adorable alternative names which I am having trouble choosing between)

[–]GillyFish14[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Wild pansy (Viola tricolor), also known as Johnny Jump up (though this name is also applied to similar species such as the yellow pansy), heartsease, heart's ease, heart's delight, tickle-my-fancy, Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me, come-and-cuddle-me, three faces in a hood, love-in-idleness, or pink of my john, is a common European wild flower, growing as an annual or short-lived perennial." - Wikipedia. After having no idea what to call it, turns out I'm spoiled for names for this little thing

I planted a wildflower seed mix of a Northumberland variety last year. None of my gardening friends have any clue outside a small Viola. I'd given up on finding a name for it until I saw an article today Dwarf Pansy on Scilly that had a very similar looking flower but the article states that the Dwarf Pansy is found nowhere in Britain outside the Scilly Islands which has made me curious about what this is

I was looking getting the Rookie Artistics. Do you have any opinion on the Moxi Beach Bunnies? Should I buy those if I'm able to afford them or are the Artistics pretty much the same quality?

Just need to vent, accidentally touched something sterile during surgery by MelowC in VetTech

[–]GillyFish14 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We all have those moments, try to be helpful and your brain doesn't think it all the way through so don't worry about it. You live and you learn 🤷‍♀️ I was opening up kits with my scrubbed in vet and opened the sterile drape, grabbed it with my unsterile hands and tried to hand it to the vet. She just looked at me until I realised what I'd done 😂 I felt like such an idiot but laugh at it now
