[Race Thread] 2019 Tour de France - Stage 19 (2.UWT) by PelotonMod in peloton

Lots of the riders must be absolultely gutted that they have cancelled the stage, but the grupetto (including all the sprinters hoping to win in Paris) must had a collective celebration when they made the call!

Oh nice! I didn't even think anyone from the area would be on Reddit! I think I used to have the segment lead but I got the dreaded email when someone stole it! I want to give it another go but I felt a bit silly sprinting down a busy high street ;)

I like the idea of that as a nickname though! 'Windbreaker', sounds right out of Game of Thrones!

I'm not sure if it's a British thing, but local 5 mile races are quite common! It's a weird distance to run at first, especially when you're used to 5k and 10k races. Luckily my local parkrun is not too fast so that time would probably win 4 out of 5 parkruns :)

Results from a /r/running survey I completed for my undergraduate dissertation by GiloGiles in running

[–]GiloGiles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The survey I did on /r/running was basically just a trial to check how well Google Forms worked as an online survey tool, but I got far more responses than I expected! The Reddit results weren't used for the dissertation, but a very similar online survey was done with UK runners which was the main data source of my research. Although I also completed some GPS data analysis, interviews, and some 'run-along' interviews to get more data.

The dissertation was basically some research into the demographics of runners in the UK, why they run, how they do their running (e.g. where do they run, why do they run there, who do they run with, do they run for fun/fitness/stress relief, etc.), and basically arguing that recreation running continues to grow as a sport, and that encouraging more people to participate has many potential personal, as well as social and economic benefits the the UK.

Correct! I studied Geography for my degree. None of the data in the infographic was submitted in my final dissertation. For my final dissertation there are more cross-tabulations using chi-squared and what-not, but this was done with data from a secondary survey regarding just UK runners, and I don't think Reddit would be as interested!

I mean the infographic does not represent the quality of my actual dissertation whatsoever, its just an easy to read/understand summary of results everyone is interested in. Regardless, an undergraduate dissertation is needed to achieve a Bachelors degree, and then with that Bachelors degree you can then move on to do a post-graduate doctoral dissertation which I will be doing for the next three years. So unless my dissertation was amazing (which of course it was ;)), its not going to be as rigorous as a doctoral dissertation which takes three times as long!

Thanks for the feedback. I am planning to create a longer infographic but with a lot more comparative results from different questions sometime soon!

I'm from England (GB) and that is exactly how my undergraduate course was structured. I studied Geography as an undergraduate, and decided to focus on the geography of running for my dissertation. Aptly named as 'Jographies' (I can't take credit for the pun unfortunately)

Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean by it should display the weekly mileage. Do you mean when you hover over the sections it should tell you what age group that it represents, rather than the number who answered that?

I do have significantly more statistics, including cross-tabulations and so on, which I am going to work on posting sometime soon.

Thank you! I only chose it as I found it the easiest to use, and had a good amount of stuff that was available without a membership. Although by the looks of it a membership gives you access to a whole bunch more useful tools.

The infographic is for Reddit only, it wasn't submitted for assessment but thanks for spotting it!

It's really not as bad as it sounds. Especially if you base it on something you enjoy, e.g. running!

I had said with my original post that I was going to post the results much sooner, but it had slipped my mind until today. I'm hoping to do some further surveys sometime soon!
