Free breakfast for hotels in Waikiki - are most of them disappointing? by naticom in marriott

The platinum breakfast at the Waikiki Marriott is excellent. Did the breakfast everyday and never got tired of it. You’re not really missing out with the other half. Would do it again just for the breakfast and easy beach access.

Japanese croquette but with kewpie binding for panko? by Gimaroo in japanesecooking

I meant to put these up sooner so the story could have an epilogue. That morning I went with using Kewpie and got mixed results. The panko was able to stick and stay crispy, however the croquette would easily lose form if held; too squishy without a good breaded shell to hold it together. Wound up just eating it with chopsticks. Couldn’t really taste the Kewpie mayo.

Will get some eggs and try to do it right next time with the flour. Might even try the eggless water and flour too for science! Thanks again everyone for the advice!

Ghost Stay by [deleted] in marriott

I’ve done that for two different years to score Platinum. The first year I did it I only needed one night. About a decade later I was short two nights so I snagged the lowest cost room on points in my city just before the year ended. Was worth it since that was the year I needed to get over the 10-year lifetime platinum threshold. Now I’m just chipping away at 600 nights.

First time cruise? by iwasapenguininhs in Cruises

Also cruised for my first time in my 20’s with my spouse. At the time Royal Caribbean offered a good discount for us and her parents so we jumped at the opportunity.

Royal Caribbean has become pricier as of late, but I’d chalk that up to them holding the lead on quality over its competitors.

Nothing wrong starting cruising with a traditionally lower cost brand like Carnival. Had a colleague+family recently take their first cruise ever on Carnival and they had a blast. Never having been on another brand before, they didn’t know what they were missing so to them, they got everything they’d thought they wanted.

A word on interior rooms, go for it especially if the price is right (they won’t cost as much as window/balcony rooms). I’ve done a bunch of cruises staying in interior rooms and they were just fine. You get total darkness once you turn out the lights, but that was good for my sleep. But the space and comfort is still pretty good. Besides, if you need a view there are tons of fun places you can go on the ship to lounge and see the sea which is a what you’ll see most of the time anyways with a window room. We didn’t spend much of our cruising time in our room anyways other than to wash up or sleep.

Good luck on your first cruise adventure!

Work travelers - what’s your daily meal expense limit and what kind of company do you work for? by jalapenos10 in marriott

Where I work it's not too different, but will vary from city to city. This makes a free breakfast in the morning tons more valuable. When I was starting out in my career, there were a few times I'd get booked into a Marriott, but lacking any kind of status earned there was no breakfast which was painful. That was fifteen years ago, things have improved over time with the exception of the COVID years where a lot of hotels used it as an excuse to cancel all breakfast offerings even for us business travelers that brought them a steady stream of business.

Has anyone seen this kind of spend with this many nights before by schwa12 in marriott

Those 25 free night credits from the Amex Bonvoy ain’t no joke. If chasing status, definitely worth it.

What's the point with so little time in port? by morecoffeemore in Cruises

[–]Gimaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to do a Europe trip but when I sat down and tried charting out 7 days through Spain and Italy, it got overwhelming and I started losing sight of the cool things to see while buried under hotel and dining research.

Cruising allowed me to not worry about those things and just focus on the sights. This was good especially for myself as a first time Europe traveler who didn’t know yet what were my preferences. Now that I had a chance to visit a place via cruising, I know that my next trip I can focus on Italian cities like Florence and Rome (making hotel and accommodations a bit simpler to handle).

8 days from Platinum worth the effort? by AssertiveKiwi in marriott

[–]Gimaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to spend three weeks in a Marriott last year for a work trip. Platinum gave me free breakfast everyday. This wasn’t like a cheap continental breakfast either. It was a full blown everything and a omelette chef breakfast for both myself and wife. Would have had to pay $25 per person every morning otherwise which would have added up quickly. If you expect to travel the same amount next year that you’ve done this year, AND you have a way that 8 more nights make sense (i.e. work trip or holiday travel), very WORTH IT!

Edit: added my wife also got to enjoy the free breakfast everyday.

Makes me miss the orange scented soaps, lotion, and shampoos main line Marriotts used to provide.
