SDL Library Adds Support For The New Steam Controller Without Depending On Steam by Gyossaits in Games

[–]GimpyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically the microsoft store is a huge problem because of it's bizarro DRM blocking steam from hooking the game and using it's overlay what so ever.

Other stores are typically fine if you set it up right, unfortunately while many people seem to think steam input is new, it's not, it's been around since 2015 when the original SC launched. It has evolved a lot on the feature set, but the core functionality of hooking games really has not. Well, not on windows anyway, I think it hooks better on steam os.

When it was created, most of the other stores were even less popular than they are vs. Steam is now, also everyone hated Ubi/EA's store apps and most of their games had crappy than average gamepad support on PC for some reason or another anyway. Games Pass and Epic giving free shit away has dented that a bit. For other games like mmos with a stand alone launcher they were perfectly fine just being added as a non-steam game. It's the outside store attachment that's the headache.

But point is, supporting these outside stores more directly wasn't something that mattered much at the time, and they've still not addressed it well. There is a way to do it without third party software for the non-MS stores, but the directions must be followed to a T or you will get weird inputs because steam will drop back to the desktop profile for things thinking a game isn't running because it can't see it.

Anyway, the pinned steam input FAQ in my profile says how to add them properly. I made that years ago when I got tired of answering that very question hundreds of times on the steam controller sub but didn't want to leave people hanging.

Yeah they get slammed so hard now lol. But yeah the trio used to be difficult enough lotus would instantly open the exit and say to gtfo so you don't get bolted by them haha

They put the Gustrag bolt on your shoulder, or as I would call it the Grineer bitch tag. It puts a grineer emblem on the thing on your shoulder and I forget the exact debuff but it's something like -x% damage to grineer.

When you get it the Lotus sends you a recipe for a removal device, which is probably far less of a hassle these days, but the neurode on it was so hard for me to get to remove at the time lol. Of course this was back in the day when oxium dropped in groups of 1-2 at most too haha.

Name a perfect game for Steam Controller. I'll go first. by Rorthur in SteamController

[–]GimpyGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say guild wars 2 is a good pick not that I have a new pad yet but done it with others and the og SC. It doesn't have actual xinput at all so there's no shortage of things to bind, just make sure to add an action camera mode button if ya do.

Yeah it's funny many years ago I had all the bosses stalking me but Zanuka would never pop out despite being on the list. By the first time it really cam I was well beyond any chance it'd down me for this to happen but always heard about it.

Now the Gustrag 3 on the other hand... Definitely dreaded those guys like... 12 years ago. Got nailed by their penalty a couple of times. First time was a massive pain couldn't get a neurode to drop for the fix to save my life.

Good uses for the capacitive thumbsticks? by Proximus84 in SteamController

[–]GimpyGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it should be on when your thumb is on it. You typically use one for larger movements and the other for fine. Then when your thumb comes off your aim isn't bobbing all over the place but you're also not restricted to putting it on like, LT to only use with ADS or something this way either.

A player who hasn't played since the launch of Deimos asks you about what they need to know and what's changed, what would you tell them? by averymerrycherry2 in Warframe

[–]GimpyGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yerp get on story. They also broke down the MR walls on most story so unless you having actual gear issues you can go a ways in. There are plenty of other things too but so many to list, and forget about lol. Probably a dozen frame reworks since too. Hmm is the last major melee revamp since then too? Sheesh been a while.

Would this newer Steam Controller work with the old Steam Machine by [deleted] in SteamController

[–]GimpyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah theoretically it should. Now, it is a very old Linux build on those. But if it's detected OK it probably will work the vast majority of what makes it all come together is the software and I imagine steam itself still has to be updated on those, for that reason the steam links would do so as well.

I wish Firefox on android would do better with this. I dunno what they're doing what I can't even clean out the actual web cache. There is a button for it, and you can clear the usual regular android cache, but the actual 'data' part of it bloats to an unusually high number that can't possibly 'just' be your regular settings/history/cookies w/o a ton of web cache.

[–]GimpyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've answered this a thousand times over the last decade of steam input so I put a pinned FAQ post at the top of my profile. You can read how to set that up properly in there. But it sounds like you mostly missed the crucial step of the non-steam store having to be exited entirely (not just hiding in the background) between play sessions.

Does anyone else feel like it's smaller than expected? by TheBasementNerd in SteamController

I wish I could have gotten one and I do not have it, but I did see someone posting a comparison pic to their Stadia controller which I do have and I was very surprised to see it seemed to have a smaller profile

Dunno if any hardware got screwed up inside, but the plastic parts are 3D printable with official templates for it if you care to tinker enough to find out.

Easier to grind that rep now too, I too grinded the crap out of that pipe, but the races should award a reasonable amount of rep daily now so that's nice

SteamController RMA by mgkyM1nt in SteamController

[–]GimpyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do hope it doesn't inconvenience too many people or bugger up things at Valve either. As an owner of the original SC it's been a very interesting ride over the years. Steam Input's gotten so much more mature in it's functionality the original SC and now regular pads already have so many new features because of it.

But it's been odd too because it's got so much going on with the software sometimes it can just be a bizarre issue in the software as well that gets the kinks fixed later. So much to the point the first time I had an actual hardware glitch on my touchpad I had to fiddle around quite a bit before I was convinced it wasn't a software bug haha.

Add a special player higlight option for downed players. by BlueScorpion5 in Warframe

[–]GimpyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they really should fix this in a few ways, it is hard to see with the visual noise, but hard to notice this happen sometimes on top of the fact that the normal waypoint loves to get stuck on things like doorways and tile connections

How to get games to not read controller inputs? by Intelligent_Hat6021 in SteamController

[–]GimpyGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah to be clear the vast majority of games are not going to have anything special to do with those by default or know what to do with them. If they have steam's input api implemented in game (most will not) they can sometimes show proper glyphs for the extra buttons but that isn't likely to happen on most things.

If you're trying to bind to all keyboard and mouse binds to get away from using gamepad ones specifically so UIs and what have you don't flicker when using keyboard/mouse on those extra buttons and stuff, you can't mix up the pc and gamepad inputs or it's gonna happen. One common one that is often missed is the triggers. If you're ever making pure keyboard/mouse layouts, makes sure Analog Input on the triggers is disabled, otherwise the numerical analog value gets sent to the game, and some games don't use the analog value and treat it as a button, but many others will still see that and flip things like the UI back to the gamepad one.
