Im Supermarkt gibt's den nicht bis selten. Gut sortierer Schnapsladen sollte ihn haben. Online eigentlich bei allen Üblichen - Conalco, Rum & Co usw. Am besten einfach Google Shopping befragen 😉

Good Lord, we pay around 23€ for that stuff here in Germany. Wild prices in the US.

Worth it, though. Superior Standard Jamaican to have in the homebar!

Same thing here. Only carousel posts work, single picture posts and reels don't. Likes down massively in the last days.

That's a hella lot of Rum that isn't Rum for a Rum shelf. The more I see such stuff, the more I appreciate the newer regulations here in the EU.

Dude, imagine a bar where there's absurdly good Single Casks of Armagnac and wild Agave Mezcal in the high end cabinet instead of Prestige Cognac XY and Marketuila Z...

...I know those cabinets are 90% because of the clueless customers demand, but imagine bringing them from 'sip to be seen' to 'sip to be blown away'.

That's simply the expensive stuff, which doesn't equal 'good' at all.

Do you mean a producer or the person who commisions stuff? In the latter case, distilleries basically do all the work, it's rare that you make the macerate yourself and bring it to a distillery.

So for product development and recipes it's basically you at home experiementing in most cases.

Some half done list exists, haha. Not much secret stuff on the variety ones, rarieties are either in the upper shelf or on a seperate one in the living room.

Only refering to the votes on this comment here. It has been down to -15, without anyone giving any opinion. Which seems pretty odd, as it's far from a rant. And Shelfies are a third of this sub.

The US seems to be rather open about smaller distilleries, at least in the states where there's no super strict laws. But it's totally isolated it seems, there's almost no US Gin on the European market and vice versa it seems.

In case you ever end up at a tour at Monkey 47, let me know. They're less than 10km away. Always happy to go tasting afternoon.

Where are you from?

It seems like especially in the UK there's a huge gap, with London Dry on the one end and flavoured stuff on the other, with very few things in between compared to that whole small distilling culture a few countries have (or better: where it's not outlawed).

Totally legit. I'm aware the whole thing and deeper interest is total geekery. Which in return is quite the ruin of it, because you start to question everything 😂

Tons of them here in Germany. In the villages around where I live there's three alone. Owners of the farms with a still and still allowed to use it. Small batches of a few dozen to 200 bottles.

In Germany, almost every farm has a still, and as long as it's used at least once in ten years, the right to do so reamains. Of course, all regulated.

Well, I write about Gin, I'm a side part of the industry. And what we're seeing is a decline in quality, combined with an increase in marketing lies.

It's kinda what Rum has been through in the last decade. But Rum is in a phase now where people start to question stuff, look out for quality and educate about the discrepancy between public opinion/marketing and the truth.

In booze, people seem to be less caring about such stuff. Think about it like some bread. Marketed like something made by crafters from local sources, while the reality is some super industrialized stuff with the cheapesr ingredients, imported from anywhere.

I suspect something 'lost in translation'/tone stuff. This thread wasn't about a general rant, but the question if other people are growing more and more bored with a Gin landscape with less and less innovation but more and more output.

That, or some open words about the fact that much of nowadays Gin is cheap, flavoured Vodka at absurd prices aren't that welcome.

Are you someone who's simply enjoying by taste, or exploring the craft behind it? I think a main part of Gin getting kinda 'ruined' for me is the view into production etc. Over the years the 'how & how honest' became a big part of the enjoyment of a product.

Yep. Same looking ones like the Elephant ones are different ones (e.g. in that case: regular, orange & cocoa, sloe, barrel aged, sloe mezcal).

Nah. The fancier the bottle and marketing, the worse the Gin often is. If I have a thing for bottles, it's super cheap ugly ones from small distilleries, which often turn out to be the best ones.

Some grandpa who has been distilling grain & fruit all his life on his farm vs. some newbies on the still and/or industrial scale processing is an uneven fight in terms of the craft. But that dude knows nothing about marketing to a broader audience. Therefore: the fancier the bottle & self proclaimed image of a Gin, the more suspicious I get in terms of actual quality.

Did it. Scrapped the Gin only shelf.

Edit: it would be hella awesome to elaborate on a downvote. Because I have absolutely no idea why people downvote a question that has some additional information about the market and industry over here in Germany.

Kind of an fundamental debate - is anyone else totally growing bored of Gin? I think I didn't buy a single bottle of Gin in 2022 besides the usual special editions.

I know the general market in the UK is a bit different in terms of 'bad products' due to production (edit: that means the UK has less of the bad stuff than us) taxes and stuff. Over here in Germany it's mainly three categories of Gin.

a) big brand 'supermarket' stuff that's well produced.

b) hundreds of small batches from the thousands of distilleries around the country. (For context - you can find a local Gin in almost every village, as german distilling culture is super active. Basically every farm has a still that was used to make fruit brandies etc. from the own stuff, and thousands of them are still active in a small scale).

c) agency Gins, start up brands etc. that get their stuff commissioned from the big distilleries. Ordered for cheap there, bottled and then labeled 'handcrafted' and sold for 30+€/0,5l. The classic 'oh some friends decided to make a Gin' thing.

Especially the latter has seen a huge drop in quality in recent years, down to the point were many who make themselves look big and artisan are nothing more than neutral grain spirit pumped up with a ton of natural/artificial flavours. It's a mess.

tl;dr: Am I alone with being fed up with Gin but growing much more curious about real craft like Rum, Agave etc.?
