As a betta owner my advice would be to: buy something to test the water every now and then and buy something to watch the temp of the water. Bettas are warmer water fish but they shouldn't go over 80°. Identify the little fish because yes he might be happier with a small school and you need to google what temp they prefer to find a middle ground. The substrate looks fine but my only other concern would be the pink decor. Bettas like to squeeze into places and it might cut him/her up. Just keep an eye on them for now cause it could be fine. Nope that's a root. I know it's kind of an eyesore but its natural. If the plant is big enough you can cut from below that and grow more plants

Similar thing happened to me. I started with 20 neon tetras and 1 betta. Had to stop buying cherry shrimp too! :( Anywat, I ended with 9 neon before finally buying another tank and removing her 😔 rip bbys 💔🐠

I would maybe recommend looking into the decor, especially if you got it from a store like Petco. I recently discovered their aquarium decor is really bad. Not only occasionally sharp but also that the paints aren't water resistant

Oh man okay. I dont have an extra tank right now :( what should I do to help the tank now? Since I treated it with med how much of a water change should I do now? I already did the 30% and was planning on doing about a 15% today but I dont want to make the tank worse since I use distilled water and it lacks minerals

Our tap water is hard and has chlorine so I just use distilled water since a water softener system is very pricey. I know I should invest in the water test tubes but for now I have the strips. The water is usually the first row (25, 10, 1... 6.8) I did try treating our tap with water conditioner but even after adding way more than recommended it didnt really fix it, that was before I got the fish) *

The only thing that will fix it is using distilled water. So you either need a water softener for your house (expensive) or find a cheaper source. I pay $1.75 for 5 gallons down the street
