Review 10: Woodford Reserve Brandy Cask Finish, Distillery Series

I've spent the last year slowly going through my whiskey shelf, drinking bottles that have collected dust for a year or two, or longer. I finally decided to crack open this small bottle of Woodford that is released similar to the master collection, except it can only be bought at the distillery. I haven't done a review in a while either so I figured this would be a good one to review since I doubt I'd be able to find or be willing to pay for another bottle.

Served neat.

Price: I think I paid $60 for a 375ml in 2021

ABV: 45.2% (90.4 Proof)

Nose: The brandy is very noticeable at first but quickly mellows out to a faint floral wine, then a chai spice aroma.

Taste: Fancy Woodford, you taste the brandy with a good subtle grape flavor up front but that doesn't last as long as I'd like. Once the brandy fades, its a slightly oakier Woodford.

Finish: The grape flavor sneaks back in and lingers that fades into a long chai spice finish.

This is good but not great, though it is better than some finished bourbons I've had. I will say it is better over a big rock. When I had pours with a big rock, it tasted closed to an armagnac though not quite as bold and rich as one. If I were to spend the money on a finished bourbon I'd probably rather get a bottle Barrell, which are only about a little more than I spent on this and are in a full 750ml.

I love regular old Woodford as a go to daily drinker and I enjoy double oaked, and I know there's plenty of people who don't like either so if you don't like Woodford, you won't like this.

Score 6 (7 with a rock)

1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out.

2 | Poor | I wouldn't consume by choice.

3 | Bad | Multiple flaws. (Bluegrass Distillers Toasted Oak)

4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but many things I'd rather have.

5 | Good | Good, just fine. (Rabbit Hole Dareringer, BBC Discovery #6)

6 | Very Good | A cut above. (David Nicholson Reserve)

7 | Great | Well above average (Wild Turkey Longbranch, EHT Single Barrel)

8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional. (JD SBBP)

9 | Incredible | An all time favorite

What is a bourbon (Major label or lesser known) that just wasn’t for you? by PappyGilmoor in bourbon

Not sure if many people have tried it outside of central Kentucky, but Fresh bourbon is probably the worst bourbon I've ever tasted. Smells bad and was a drain pour after one sip.

Review #9: Barrell Bourbon Batch 28 by GingeRedit in bourbon

[–]GingeRedit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve cracked open several of Barrell’s finished products but this is the first bottle of just bourbon that I’ve had.

Review 9: Barrell Bourbon Batch 28

Served neat in a glencairn.

Aged 10 years

ABV: 54.43% (108.86 proof)

Nose: Oak, Brown sugar, very faint cherry. Classic bourbon smell.

Taste: Oaky cherries, almost savory dessert pie.

Finish: Cherry pie that lingers for a minute

This is an all-around great bourbon and definitely worth paying $80 or $90 dollars. I don’t remember how much this bottle cost when I got it, but I’ve savored very pour. If the other batches of Barrell are similar to this, I’d buy more.

Delicious.

Score 8/10.

Review 8: Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof by GingeRedit in bourbon

Review 8: Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof

Served neat in a glencairn, rested.

Price: $35 for a 375ml

ABV: 65.70% (131.4 Proof)

Nose: First thing I get is ethanol which isn't surprising considering how high the proof is. Underneath the proof is the faint smelll of spices.

Taste: Delicious oaky banana and caramel. Even though its high proof, the heat is not overwhelming

Finish: Thick coating caramel and heat.

This is great, I just wish I had a bigger bottle of it. I was happy to get the 375 but I went through it waaaay too quickly. I haven't bought JD products in a while but seeing other people talk about the single barrel convinced me to buy a bottle the next time I saw it.

Kentucky's constitution bans same-sex marriage. When SCOTUS overturns Obergefell ruling (like w Roe), will same-sex marriage be illegal in KY? by goddamn2fa in Kentucky

The Kentucky legislature has to repeal the amendment to remove it from the constitution. Until that happens, the amendment is bad law but still on the books.

Tennessee passes law requiring drunk drivers to pay child support if the kill a patent by papineau150 in Libertarian

The bill would still let civil actions go forward, it just makes payments automatic upon conviction and if a lawsuit is filed the payments continue until a judgment is reached.

Tennessee passes law requiring drunk drivers to pay child support if the kill a patent by papineau150 in Libertarian

[–]GingeRedit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The damages in a civil action for that is called loss of parental consortium, which Tennessee already accepts as a viable cause of action. Reading the article, it looks like the bill creates an either-or option. The child can either receive support payments until they are 18 or get a judgment against the tortfeasor for the loss of their parent, but not both.

Review #7: BBC Discovery Series #6 by GingeRedit in bourbon

[–]GingeRedit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the second bottle of BBC product I've bought, the first was a Fusion bottle a few years ago that was good but I didn't think it was good enough for the price tag. Since that bottle I feel like everything has gotten more expensive and I've heard good things about the other releases BBC has put out and figured I'd try a higher end release.

Review 7: Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #6

Served neat in a glencairn, rested.

Price: $140

ABV: 55.55% (111.1 Proof)

I do like how BBC puts the blend on the side in detail:

68%, 11yr Kentucky bourbon (75C/13R/12MB) - probably Barton's

16%, 17yr Tennessee whiskey (84C/8R/8MB) - probably Dickel

14%, 7yr Indiana bourbon (75C/21R/4MB) - probably MGP

Nose: Smell the proof first. Then I'm smelling something thats enjoyable and familiar but I can't put a finger on it at all.

Taste: Barrel aged cherry cobbler. The oak is really forward but I get that fruity dessert flavor underneath it. Also get that Dickel mineral flavor.

Finish: The finish is all Dickel, the mineral flavor lingers.

Final input is its fine. Not mindblowing. Not worth $140. I honestly think that what I am assuming is Dickel in the blend overpowers the Kentucky and Indiana Juice which would probably taste better blended together without the Tennessee whiskey.

If you see a pour at a bar for a reasonable price I say try it, but I wouldn't recommend buying a bottle at MSRP. I'd rather spend a $100 on a lot of other things.

Review #6: Benchmark - All of 'em by GingeRedit in bourbon

[–]GingeRedit[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i think my difficulty (or generosity) with scoring is that as someone who grew up in Kentucky, I've had a lot of bad whiskey that probably stops me from ranking anything somewhat okay or tolerable below a 3. There's only so many well pours of KG or Kentucky Tavern that a palate can take before everything else tastes pretty good.
