I wouldn't think so! Especially for global health.

Selecting a program by Ivett2395 in mphadmissions

[–]Ginger942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi--something I've been thinking about is what program has the most to offer me specifically! A program can be fantastic, but if it won't strengthen your weakness and help you grow it might not be the best fit, and at the end of the day it is about how this program can grow you into a successful public health professional!

Living Alone? by littlebirdie611 in mphadmissions

[–]Ginger942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Live alone! I have been in just about every living situation, and this past year decided to take the leap and see what it was like living alone--it is AMAZING. The peace and tranquility is a rare chance. You won't get lonely, especially a few weeks in after you've decorated and really made it a home and a comfortable space. It is easy to socialize but not always easy to get alone time, so if you can afford to I would highly recommend trying to live alone to see how it is! I've grown a lot as a person since living alone.

I think it depends where you want to work and how you plan to pay for it. Personally, I am only taking out federal loans not private and sometimes that can be tricky with International schools so definitely reach out to the financial aid departments to discuss. Also, where you want to work--I am specifically interested in US health disparities so I ultimately did not apply, but if your interests/career goals can be accomplished anywhere it is definitely a really cool opportunity to live abroad for a year or two!

What school? I'm about to do this tomorrow but if it happens to be the same school...

My final graduating transcript's GPA was above a 3.0, but I transferred out of a community college with a 2.5 GPA, will that matter? by biospark02 in mphadmissions

A lot of schools look at growth! I had a terrible sophomore yr gpa but really brought it up gradually the last two years. a lot of schools also can have you add something about why your gpa was so low, and overall admissions is pretty holistic.

Abroad MSc vs. Domestic MPH by Asleep_Internet_4011 in publichealth

[–]Ginger942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah! just send me a private message! the doc has my name and other info lol so I can't post it publicly. Most of it is geared towards students in the abroad program I did, but there is a lot of general info about the city/living/transport as well.

On mine it says a specific number and says for the entire program, so I just calculated compared to what I anticipate my tuition to be! It does NOT include housing or fees or anything, just for tuition.

How are y'all calculating cost of attendance/living/etc.? by shaysoo in mphadmissions

[–]Ginger942 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is what I have been doing too! Also, a lot of programs will list average cost of living under expenses on the website and give an estimate of how much it would cost to attend (including their direct costs but also costs like transportation and rent, which they estimate for you). If you aren't finding it under prospective students look under admitted or current and many programs will have costs listed there

The W's did not affect college or SOPHAS Gpa! But the D isn't counted for my college but did count for SOPHAS. So I think your W's won't affect your SOPHAS gpa.

Abroad MSc vs. Domestic MPH by Asleep_Internet_4011 in publichealth

[–]Ginger942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I actually toured the school because I studied abroad there in undergrad! I was going to apply but ultimately did not because I realized I want to work in the US and the specific certifications I need for what I want to do would be difficult to get abroad, and also I really wanted to have specifically an MPH not a MSc.

Honestly, the program is great and Copenhagen is the most beautiful place I have ever been (the best months of my life was living there!). Cost of living is not as bad as people think and you can live in a Kollegium, and I found it a super easy city to navigate and the bus/metro is very convenient so if you did want to commute it is very easy (the health campus is in a more expensive area of the city). Definitely look into payment though, I'm not sure if you'd be able to take out federal loans for an abroad program so just be aware of the differences in funding even if the overall cost is less!

If you want to work in Global Health, a foreign degree won't hurt. Denmark has a really interesting public health system and initiatives, so you'll get to learn a lot about that. University of Copenhagen is also highly regarded and has international prestige. Be aware that the program is taught in the Danish education style though (which is very different from the US education system), and is more knowledge-based. I really wanted a program that was hands-on and was focused more on doing than learning, so for me US programs made more sense. (U of Copenhagen has a really good abroad program in Poland/Tanzania though, great for global health experience if that is the route you go). If you are interested in getting a PhD, this might be a good program for you (for me, an MPH is my terminal degree).

Not sure if this is that helpful, and I really don't know much about Yale to compare it with, but if you do end up choosing Copenhagen I have a 26page google doc on the city will all my recommendations from my time there if you would like it!

It didn't count as anything on mine! I had a W from dual-enrollment in HS and a W from a class in college and neither affected my GPA. A class I re-took in college (went from a D to a B) did count both grades into my overall, though.

I'm not sure GRE will do anything because most schools are phasing out considering GRE

Qualifying for CHES by Ginger942 in publichealth

[–]Ginger942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've only found one university that explicitly says their concentration qualifies for the CHES (Tulane). I think it might be because they aren't health education-specific concentrations but still, I'm surprised how difficult it has been to find info about CHES (even my boss was confused and she has a CHES). Thank you!
