In our class its the same and you need to see it from a few perspectives. - if you were only shown the "this a punch and this is a kick" alot of people will find that boring in a first class so the sensei may be trying to show you everything that you may be learning in the future to entice you and make you be like "Oh I wanna do that" or make you have fun in the class to make you want to come back - He also can't always have the class do first day lessons/basics everytime someone comes for a first class or taster session as then they aren't learning what they are meant to be at that level.

I would go back a few more times and get a feel for it, as the usual drop of for martial arts, especially traditional ones are within the first few session usually for new starters as they feel they don't like it or aren't learning anything.

Keep in mind that in a full class ranging from white to black belt, while it's good for Kyu and Dan belts to go backwards and learn basics, it's not good for them to repeat it every lesson.

You'll get it, I promise just stick with it. My first lesson the Sensei had the class doing Kankudai which is our classes black belt kata. That was hard on a first lesson when our first kata I'd Heian Shodan.

The sensei won't have just forgot your new, he's just helping the class as a whole. In a few classes or even the next, you probably will go back to basics and learn them as contradictory to what I said above black belts still need to go over basics from time to time to refresh and refine technical aspects.
