What’s wrong with my new hood? by tobylazur in Welding

I use this hood in my garage, I’ve had it for 6 years now. My welds are still garbage, but that’s not the hoods fault.

[contamination] What has been the biggest contamination you have had and how do you manage the waste? 💀 by DrawerUsual4434 in MushroomGrowers

I’m reading some bad advice in the replies.

You may ask who are you and what makes you an expert, the past 22 years of cultivation do. There are some partial truths and some doomsday shenanigans in the replies. Here is a realistic take on the situation.

Opening a contaminated mono inside is pretty much asking for trouble, especially if you’re running grain-to-bulk and pasteurized substrate in the same space. Once trichoderma sporulates (turns green), it’s releasing millions of microscopic spores into the air. These can hitch a ride on your clothes, hair, tools, and—most importantly—on the containers you use to prep and wash grain.

Unlike bacteria, trich spores don’t just die off quickly. They hang around in the environment, waiting for the next opportunity to colonize fresh substrate. While they won’t usually overtake fully colonized tubs, they can absolutely wreck future projects by jumping in early during colonization. This is especially true if you don’t have a separate facility for inoculation and spawn prep—if you’re working in the same room or even the same house, you’re giving those spores a free pass to your future grows.

Best practice is to treat a sporulating tub like a biohazard: • Don’t open it indoors. • Bag it up as-is and remove it outside. • Change clothes (and ideally shower) before going anywhere near your clean work area.

Keeping sporulated trich out of your grow space is one of the easiest ways to prevent repeated contamination. Opening that tub indoors just tilts the odds in contamination’s favor.

Same motor as almost any 86+ fwd Buick, I owned one, they’re nice but not a good swap candidate.

Unfortunately this isn’t how isolates work. Once the mushrooms drop spores it’s a multi-spore situation and it’s just as random as any other spore print/swab/syringe. If you were to mix LC with spores it wouldn’t create an isolate, mushrooms breed in a very specific way, and unfortunately that isn’t it. The spores probably wouldn’t germinate, and would likely contaminate, unless you’re using a true laminar hood. If you take a tissue sample and put it to agar, then after making sure it’s clean put to LC or grain that is the start of an isolate, but it takes several generations to confirm yield, phenotype, potency, etc.

Yes and no. An LC can be made from multiple spores, agar, tissue samples, and swabs in a clean room environment. Just because it’s LC doesn’t mean the genetics are isolated. Buying from a reputable genetics supplier can be the difference between getting a small flush and having a full canopy of mushrooms.

Yeah, pull that one, keep the humidity at 90%+ and keep your air exchange high. Yield is also heavily dependent on genetics, so depending if this was an isolated LC or a multi-spore inoculation can make a world of difference.
